Samsung’s apparent solution would distinguish itself from rival services by also providing image transmission.
TL;DR
- Satellite connectivity is expected to be added to the Samsung Galaxy S23 series.
- Samsung is thought to be working on sending texts and images via satellite.
- Apple and Huawei do not support satellite image transmission.
We’ve already seen Apple and Huawei offer satellite connectivity on their latest flagship phones, but it appears that the Galaxy S23 series may be next in line.
According to Korea’s ET News, Samsung is developing satellite communication technology for the Galaxy S23 series, with Iridium as the obvious satellite partner.
According to the source, Samsung is working on sending text messages and low-quality images via satellite. Image transmission appears to be a step up from Apple and Huawei’s satellite communication efforts. Both of these brands can only send emergency text and location information via satellite.
This news comes on the heels of T-Mobile’s announcement of a satellite communication partnership with Starlink. When the beta program begins at the end of 2023, it will be limited to SMS, MMS, and “supported” messaging apps. The duo did, however, confirm that they are pursuing voice and data coverage via satellite.
Nonetheless, we await official confirmation of Samsung’s take on the service, assuming it is indeed coming. We’re also excited to learn about pricing and geographical availability.
