After more than three years, Windows 10 is now the dominant operating system.
The new year has brought Microsoft some good news. According to the most recent data from Net Applications (via The Verge), Windows 10 is now the most popular operating system in the world, surpassing Windows 7.
Windows 10 currently holds 39.2% of the desktop OS market share, surpassing Windows 7’s 36.9% share. This is the first time Windows 10 has surpassed Windows 7, which despite the releases of Windows 8 and Windows 10 has remained quite popular.
Microsoft revealed that Windows 10 is now installed on more than 700 million active devices at the end of last year. Microsoft had hoped to have 1 billion active devices by now when it first launched Windows 10, but the company reported 500 million active devices in 2017.
Regarding Windows 7, mainstream support for the aging operating system ended in 2015, and extended support will end in 2020.
