The Galaxy S10 may feature a significant design change that alters its appearance and feel.
Samsung’s Galaxy S10 may drop a feature that some users and reviewers have panned in recent years.
Mobile Fun, an online mobile accessory retailer, recently published a video purporting to show screen protectors for Samsung’s Galaxy S10 lineup. Olixar, a company that has been making cases and screen protectors for Samsung devices for years, provides screen protectors. While we cannot confirm their veracity, they do indicate a significant shift in Samsung’s design choices.
The screen protectors, in particular, suggest that Samsung may be abandoning the curved edges that have been a feature of the Galaxy S line since the Galaxy S6 Edge. That would be consistent with other recent leaks showing iPhones with flat screens rather than curved displays.
It’s unclear why Samsung, which has long favored the curved Galaxy S design, has decided to abandon it. It could be due to the company’s desire to simplify software and avoid offering cutting-edge features. It could also be a way to save money on a device that is already expected to be expensive. Some users have also complained that items along the curved edges of Samsung phones are difficult to target with touch.
In any case, the screen protectors indicate that a flat screen is on the way. And, perhaps more importantly, they appear to confirm rumors that Samsung is planning a 6.4-inch screen for the Galaxy S10+ while sticking with a 6.1-inch screen for the standard Galaxy S10.
Of course, it’s impossible to tell whether the screen protectors are genuine. While it’s possible that Samsung gave some of its accessory partners early access in order to get products on store shelves ahead of the smartphones’ launch, it’s also possible that Olixar is guessing here in anticipation of the launch and with a desire to be first to market.
Nonetheless, there is mounting evidence that the Galaxy S10 will undergo significant changes. And it appears that a shift to a flat-screen design is one of the more likely outcomes when the devices are unveiled, which could be as early as February 20.
