Samsung Will Release A “8K” Successor To The Odyssey Neo G9 Next Year

In conjunction with the Radeon RX 7900 XTX.

Something to be excited about: Yesterday, AMD hosted its RDNA 3-reveal Livestream, revealing new graphics cards, technologies, and more. Among the announcements was the fact that Samsung is developing a successor to the monstrous Odyssey Neo G9, a 49-inch display with a resolution of 5,120 by 1,440 pixels. According to reports, this is the first 8K ultrawide gaming monitor.

The entirety of AMD’s Together We Advance Gaming Livestream, which can be viewed here, centered on the 8K capabilities of the Radeon RX 7900 XTX. Team red displayed graphs claiming the card can reach 96 fps @ 8K in the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Valhalla expansion, with the caveat that it is using FSR and not native DisplayPort. With an 8K ultrawide display, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 achieves 190 frames per second.

AMD also confirmed that Dell, Asus, Acer, and LG will release high-resolution DisplayPort 2.1 monitors next year. It added that the next Odyssey Neo G9 would be the first 8K ultrawide display.

It is important to note that standard 8K on a 16:9 display has a resolution of 7,680 by 4,320 pixels or four times that of 4K. However, the 8K portion of a 32:9 ultrawide monitor only applies to the horizontal dimension, resulting in a resolution of 7,680 by 2,160 pixels, or approximately half the pixel count of the actual 8K.

We adore the modern “5K” Odyssey Neo G9, which has a 5,120 x 1,440 VA panel with a 1000R curvature, a mini-LED backlight, and a 240Hz refresh rate. In addition, it carried a hefty $2,500 price tag at launch, so this “8K” variant will likely be even more expensive.

While having a monitor with twice as many pixels as 4K (in the case of the upcoming Odyssey) sounds impressive, the question of diminishing returns arises when reaching these FSR-enabled resolutions. Linus Tech Tips, a tech channel on YouTube, recently produced a video on the topic and discovered that the majority of gamers could not distinguish between 4K and 8K resolutions in games. Still, some PC owners will be satisfied with the bragging rights alone.
