Oracle Expands Its Cloud Infrastructure Portfolio And Targets The Partner Cloud Market

Oracle Alloy will enable partners such as systems integrators, telcos, and other service providers to provide a comprehensive set of cloud services that can be tailored to specific markets and industries.

Oracle has expanded its cloud infrastructure portfolio with a new offering that allows partners like systems integrators and telcos to sell and deliver cloud services to their customers.

The cloud infrastructure platform, dubbed Alloy, was announced at the company’s CloudWorld conference in Las Vegas and allows Oracle partners to provide a full set of cloud infrastructure and platform services tailored to the needs of specific markets and industries.

Partners can run Alloy in private data centers independently and fully control its operations to meet regulatory requirements, such as those of the public sector and other industries that may want to keep workloads in their own countries and operate their cloud services independently.

It also supports software and hardware extensibility, allowing partners to provide compute services powered by a variety of hardware, including graphics processing units, Arm processors, and even mainframes, to meet the needs of specific workloads.

“Providing more options to our partners and customers has long been a priority for OCI [Oracle Cloud Infrastructure],” said Clay Magouyrk, executive vice president of OCI. “We’re taking it a step further by allowing our partners to become cloud providers, allowing them to build new services faster and address specific market and regulatory requirements.”

IDC research director Chris Kanaracus stated that Alloy’s ability to extend OCI’s infrastructure and platform services to partner-controlled environments may appeal to customers who “want cloud environments that live closer to them, whether for performance, growing data sovereignty reasons, or simply to leverage familiar relationships with existing trusted service providers.”

“They also want cloud services that are tailored to their industries,” he explained. “Additionally, at IDC, we increasingly see the cloud as a consistent operating model for IT, rather than something tied to a specific location.” Oracle Alloy reflects these developments.”

Tomohiro Takemoto, senior executive managing director of Japan’s Nomura Research Institute (NRI), which is running mission-critical workloads on two OCI dedicated regions, said Oracle Alloy would “not only make it easier for our customers to build and run their applications and services but also allow us to better integrate our financial applications and customers’ systems.”

In addition to enabling partners to become cloud suppliers, Oracle is strengthening its ability to extend Oracle Fusion applications with additional capabilities via an application development platform that it can use to build user experience, telemetry, and search components, among other things.

Separately, Oracle extended its MySQL Heatwave cloud database service to Microsoft Azure, allowing users to perform both online analytics and online transaction processing on Azure data. This follows the September launch of a similar service for Amazon Web Services.

It also introduced new developer services for creating cloud-native apps, pre-trained AI, data services, and low-code development, as well as services to improve security, observability, and developer experience.

According to Gartner’s April supplier report, existing and new customers are increasingly adopting Oracle’s cloud products, as evidenced by revenue growth in recent quarters.

“Growth has been primarily driven by cloud offerings such as autonomous databases and, more broadly, OCI, with recurring subscriptions accounting for a higher percentage of revenue,” it said. “This aids Oracle in terms of increased revenue scale and deferred revenue.”

Oracle’s investment in its cloud infrastructure offerings over the years, according to Sid Nag, vice-president analyst at Gartner’s technology and service provider group, has enabled it to achieve feature parity with other hyperscalers.

“Oracle, like Microsoft, has applications, middleware, databases, infrastructure, compute and storage, containerization, serverless functions, and AI,” he explained to Computer Weekly. “They have finally distinguished themselves, and other market leaders will face stiff competition.”
