We may still see new iPads and Macs in the near future, but not with many upgrades beyond new chipsets.
We’re still waiting for Apple’s rumored October product launches. But, if and when they do, it appears that it will be all about new iPads and Macs.
Dohyun Kim (opens in new tab) of Twitter claims that new iPad and iPad Pro models, as well as new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros and a refreshed Mac mini, will be available by the end of October. This is consistent with other Apple rumors we’ve heard, so the tech insider consensus appears to be that Apple will release new tablets and computers this month.
Apple executives issued an update on October 14th. Apple executives Craig Federighi and Greg Joswiak are scheduled to speak at a Wall Street Journal event (opens in new tab) on October 25, so we could see some major Apple product announcements that day or shortly before.
To begin, a standard iPad 2022 is expected, which could be the most notable update of all the new products. It has been rumored that it will be completely redesigned to match the modern, flat-sided design of the iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad mini, including a much larger display and USB-C.
However, given that Apple is now thought to be announcing this batch of products via press release rather than an event, it would be strange to introduce such a significant change without full fanfare.
iPad Pro 2022
The iPad Pro 2022 is another tablet to keep an eye out for. This is rumored to be a transition from the current Apple M1 chip to a new Apple M2 chip, similar to the MacBook Air M2 and 13-inch MacBook Pro M2 released earlier this year. Aside from that, there have been reports of wireless charging and a new smart connector.
Of course, the new iPads will ship with the new iPadOS 16, which includes the new Stage Manager feature for improved multitasking. Apple is said to be fine-tuning this and other features behind the scenes, and we’re still expecting a launch this month.
MacBook Pro 14″ and 16″ with M2 Pro
Moving on to laptops, it’s widely expected that a new MacBook Pro with M2 Pro models will be released this month. These may only differ from the current 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with their new chips, which are expected to be dubbed M2 Pro and M2 Max and will build on the M2’s improved architecture with more CPU and GPU cores for pro-level performance.
Overall, the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro are among the best laptops due to their fast performance and long battery life. We also appreciate the complete set of ports, which includes HDMI and an SD Card slot. As a result, Apple does not need to reinvent the wheel here.
Mac mini M2 2022
In terms of desktop computers, we could see a Mac mini 2022 with a standard M2 chip to replace the Mac mini M1 that debuted at the end of 2020. So the most significant change could simply be more powerful.
Back in May, leaker Jon Prosser claimed that the next Mac mini would be smaller and have more ports. He claims it will have the same magnetic charging connector as the new 24-inch iMac 2021, as well as four Thunderbolt ports, two USB-A ports, Ethernet, and HDMI ports.
However, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo now predicts that the new Mac mini will not receive a design refresh when it is released.
iPad OS 16 and macOS Ventura
macOS Ventura and iPadOS 16 are two other things that could be included in this announcement bundle. The latest version of the Mac and iPad operating systems have been delayed from their scheduled September release date, presumably to allow Apple more time to iron out any kinks. Even if the rumored products do not materialize, Apple has already confirmed October releases for both the new macOS and iPadOS versions.
At the time of writing, we’re almost halfway through October, which gives Apple another two weeks to deliver the devices we’re expecting. If you can’t wait that long, check out our best iPads and best MacBooks guides to see what your current top choices are.
