Windows 11’s journey began well before its official release last year. Originally believed to be associated with the Windows 10X project, Windows 11 is now intended as an OS for all form factors, including foldable PCs and laptops with dual screens.
The release of a foldable/dual-screen optimized version of Windows was postponed and ultimately canceled due to a shift in Microsoft’s strategy, a chip shortage, and a renewed interest in laptops. Microsoft is no longer developing Windows 10X, so the company is not creating a new operating system for foldable PCs.
Microsoft instead intends to optimize Windows 11 for foldable and dual-screen computers. It will not be a stripped-down or lightweight version of Windows this time. According to sources, Microsoft will automatically detect when a device is a foldable PC and optimize the interface accordingly.
This action will introduce a few new features and capabilities that will only benefit Windows 11 foldable PCs. Possible new features include an interface that is significantly more tablet-friendly and new snap layouts that favor dual screens with a hinge.
We are aware that it will not be a new version of Windows, unlike Windows 11 or Windows 11 in S, but the overall appearance and layout of Windows 11 for foldable will be noticeably different. Note that the changes will not be particularly significant, but they will be noticeable on foldable items.
Windows 11 features for foldable PCs will debut in 2023
Microsoft is taking its time, but you can expect foldable PC-related modifications as early as May or June 2023. The company intends to prepare Windows 11 for single- and dual-screen form factors with Moment 3 (the third major feature update for version 22H2/2022).
Initial code for Windows 11 will be added with the Moment 3 update, and actual features may become available in the fall. Microsoft plans to optimize its operating system to accommodate this new product category by the holidays of 2023.
Microsoft is planning to release Windows 11 version 23H2 in the fall of 2023. (based on version 22H2). The internal name for this update is Moment 4, but it will include more features than previous Momen updates.
The release of Windows 11 23H2 would occur in September or October.
Microsoft will push minor new features via monthly cumulative updates to maintain Windows 11’s popularity.
Microsoft continues to expand the availability of Windows 11 version 22H2 in the interim. Microsoft released the first true feature update for the operating system in October.
