Last month, Apple unveiled its new iPhone and Apple Watch models. However, the company is said to be working on some other new products. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the M2 iPad Pro will be announced in the coming days. New Macs, on the other hand, will not be available until later this year.
New iPads will be available very soon
Gurman confirmed today that new iPad models will be available “very soon.” More specifically, a new generation iPad Pro equipped with the M2 chip was introduced in June alongside the M2 MacBook Air. The new iPad Pro models, codenamed J617 and J620, will retain the current form factor, with 11-inch and 12.9-inch displays.
Because the M2 chip is about 20% faster than the M1, consumers are unlikely to notice a significant performance boost over the current iPad Pro model. Other significant hardware changes appear unlikely at this time.
A new entry-level iPad, in addition to the M2 iPad Pro, is expected to be announced in the coming days, according to Gurman. In June, 9to5Mac first revealed details about the 10th-generation iPad. This iPad model, codenamed J272, will have a new design, a USB-C port instead of a Lightning port, and 5G support.
Unlike the more expensive iPads, however, the new entry-level iPad will be powered by the A14 Bionic chip, which is also found in the iPhone 12 and iPad Air 4. This means that Apple will continue to limit the M-series chips to the iPad Pro and iPad Air.
Gurman previously stated that iPadOS 16.1 will be available to the public the week of October 24. Because this update includes support for the new iPad models, it wouldn’t be surprising if the company announced the new iPads as soon as next week. The journalist also believes that rather than a special event, the products will be announced via press release.
What about new Macs?
Recent rumors have also suggested that new Macs will be released in late 2022. While Gurman believes that Apple will release new Macs soon, he believes that they will be released later, rather than alongside the new iPads.
More specifically, new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are scheduled for release “in the near future.” The M2 Pro and M2 Max chips will be used in these MacBooks, which will be more powerful versions of the M2 chip. Gurman’s report also mentions an M2 Mac mini in the works, which has been confirmed by 9to5Mac sources.
Apple is also said to be working on a new generation Apple TV with the A14 chip and 4GB of RAM, which would be a significant upgrade over the current model with the A12 chip. However, there is no word on when this new Apple TV will be released.
