Linkedin Adds New Features To Protect User Privacy And Security

The social media platform is introducing new features and systems to protect legitimate users from fraudulent profiles and activity.

LinkedIn has announced plans to roll out a series of platform enhancements to protect its community from inauthentic, or even malicious, profiles and activity.

Its goal is to assist users in making more informed decisions about those with whom they choose to interact when accepting connection requests, learning more about business or career opportunities, or simply exchanging contact information.

Additional information about user profiles, back-end features to detect fake profiles, and systems to stop suspicious messages are among the enhancements.

“I’ve had the pleasure of hearing from you and other LinkedIn members how much value you get from the professional community we’re building,” said Oscar Rodriguez, LinkedIn’s vice president of product management.

“It’s also important to feel confident that the people you meet are genuine in order to find your next job, learn new skills, or connect with others.”

In the future, LinkedIn users will notice an “About This Profile” feature that will provide information on when a profile was created or last updated, as well as whether or not it is linked to a verified phone number or work email account, though this last feature will initially be piloted with a small number of companies.

“Starting this week, you can find the ‘About This Profile’ feature on each LinkedIn member’s profile page, and you’ll soon see it in more places, including when viewing invitations and messages,” Rodriguez explained.

“We hope that viewing this information will assist you in making informed decisions, such as whether to accept a connection request or respond to a message.”

In addition, the platform is implementing a new deep-learning-based model that will proactively scan new profile photo uploads to determine whether or not a user’s profile picture was generated using artificial intelligence (AI).

According to Rodriguez, rapid advances in AI-based synthetic image generation have enabled scammers and fraudsters to create virtually an infinite number of exceptionally convincing, high-quality profile photos that do not correspond to any human, living or dead. Many operators of bogus LinkedIn accounts use such technology to conceal their deception.

“Our new deep-learning-based model is AI-generated using cutting-edge technology designed to detect subtle image artifacts associated with the AI-based synthetic image generation process,” Rodriguez explained.

“This model improves the effectiveness of our automated anti-abuse defenses by detecting and removing fake accounts before they reach our members.”

Finally, LinkedIn will add a warning to messages that are detected as containing potentially high-risk content, such as those that request that a conversation be redirected to a different platform – a common indication that a scammer is at work. These warnings will also give recipients the option to report the content without informing the sender.

“We’re excited to begin rolling out these new features,” Rodriguez said. “In the future, you’ll see updates on how we’re improving automated systems for fake account detection and removal, as well as more member features to help keep everyone safe.”

According to Rachel Jones, CEO of SnapDragon Monitoring, while LinkedIn primarily attracts legitimate users, it also provides criminals with an easy way to commit fraud.

“Today, criminals will frequently use social media platforms to defraud people, so any move to protect users is a positive step,” she said.

“These scams range from criminals creating fake profiles and advertising the sale of fake counterfeit goods, which can endanger people’s lives, to monetary scams in which fraudsters create spoofs of legitimate websites, publicize them on social media, and then trick people into visiting them and providing financial information.”

“In addition, criminals use social media to lure people into romance scams or to set up fake profiles posing as recruiters for legitimate organizations.”

“These scams cause irreparable emotional and financial harm, and businesses and online platforms must do more to protect users.” If a company notices that its website is being duplicated by criminals, it must act quickly and efficiently to take it down before it causes harm.”
