iOS 12, which was released in September, is now installed on 78% of all iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches shipped over the past four years, according to updated statistics provided to developers by Apple.
17 percent of these devices are still running iOS 11, while 5 percent are using iOS 10 or earlier. People sometimes refrain from updating their iPhones and iPads for the sake of hacking, testing, app compatibility, or speed — even though iOS 12 was designed to improve performance on older hardware, annual iOS upgrades have historically caused either minor or significant slowdowns.
By extending analytics to all Apple mobile devices, the percentage of iOS 12 users falls to 75%. The missing 3 percent can be found among users of iOS versions before iOS 11, some of whom may not be able to install the most recent software.
So far, iOS 12 adoption has outpaced iOS 11. iOS 11 was installed on 65% of devices as of late January of last year, reaching 85% just days before iOS 12’s release.
iOS 12 includes features such as an enhanced notification system, emoji, ARKit 2 support, and Siri shortcuts that enable something comparable to Amazon Alexa skills.
