Make sure to test out these iOS 16.1 features before the next iOS update is released.
Apple’s third developer beta for iOS 16.2 is now available for download, implying that iOS 16.2 will be widely available soon. Have you checked out the new features in iOS 16.1 before that release? In early October, compatible iPhones (and iPads running iPadOS 16) received the latest iOS software. Following on from iOS 16’s new tricks, such as the ability to unsend messages and further customize your lock screen, iOS 16.1 adds a slew of new features, tweaks, and fixes to your iPhone.
What’s new in iOS 16.1 and what each feature does are detailed below. If you haven’t already downloaded the update, we show you how to do so here. Do you want to learn more about your iPhone? Examine all of the best-hidden features and setting changes that will improve the performance of your device.
iCloud Shared Photo Library
Sharing photos with friends and family after a night out or vacation can be time-consuming. However, you can easily share photos and videos with up to five other people using iCloud Shared Photo Library.
Anyone with access to the Shared Photo Library can add, edit, and delete content. You can upload photos directly from your iPhone’s camera to the library and add photos to the library while physically present with others who have access to it.
You cannot, however, participate in two shared libraries at the same time, and photos moved from your library to the shared library are not duplicated and can only be found in the shared library.
Dynamic Island Live Activities and Lock Screen
Live Activities improve the Dynamic Island and lock screen on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. With Live Activities, your Dynamic Island and lock screen display notifications from third-party apps such as sports games and flight schedules.
Apple Fitness Plus in the absence of an Apple Watch
You no longer need an Apple Watch to use Apple Fitness Plus with iOS 16.1. You can track your fitness progress and goals on your phone if you have an iPhone 8 or later.
Updates to the battery display
iPhones from the XR onwards now have the option to show the battery percentage in the battery meter icon. The font used for the battery icon has also been slightly enlarged to make it easier to read.
Updates to the wallpaper and lock screen
In iOS 16.1, Apple made it a little easier to customize your wallpaper. The option to add a new wallpaper from the Settings > Wallpaper menu is now more visually distinct, and you can swipe through existing wallpapers. You’ll also have the option to customize either your lock screen or your home screen when editing your wallpaper from the lock screen (instead of just the lock screen).
The interface of the screenshot editing tools has been updated.
When you use the editing menu to modify a screenshot, the delete, save, and copy options are now displayed across the top of your screen in a smaller, less intrusive menu. These options were previously located at the bottom of your iPhone’s screen.
Upgrades to wallet apps
You can use Messages and WhatsApp to securely share car, hotel room, and other Wallet app information. Customers with an Apple Card can also grow their Daily Cash by depositing funds into a high-yield savings account. If you prefer, you can remove the Wallet app from your iPhone.
Matter provides smart home connectivity
The new smart home connectivity standard Matter is now supported. That means you can use your iPhone to control smart devices like Alexa and Google Assistant.
Clean Energy Charging Mode
In the Battery section of Settings, a new Clean Energy Charging toggle has been added. When you charge your iPhone, the setting may help you reduce your carbon footprint. When Clean Energy Charging is enabled, your iPhone will charge only when lower carbon emission electricity is available. This setting appears to be enabled by default, but you can disable it by going to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging and tapping the toggle next to Clean Energy Charging.
Upgraded Apple Books interface
When you open Apple Books if you read books on your iPhone, your reader controls will be hidden.
Corrections to bugs
Apple also fixed several bugs. These updates address issues such as deleted conversations showing up in Messages, some Dynamic Island content not showing up when using Reachability, and CarPlay not connecting when using a VPN app.
