Overview

The Files app on iPad gets long-awaited features with iPadOS 16. The interface, for example, has been updated with navigation buttons, similar to the Finder on macOS. The new forward and back buttons next to the folder name at the top of the screen make it easier to navigate between folders. When you tap the arrow next to the folder name, the Files app displays a menu with the folder’s size, quick access to previous folders, and options to rename, copy, or move it. There’s also a Get Info button, which displays even more information about the folder you’ve selected. New options have been added to the menu that appears when you press (or right-click) on a file. This includes quick access to Quick Actions for image markup, rotation, PDF conversion, and image background removal. Quick Actions, of course, differ depending on the file format selected.

Changing file extensions in iPadOS 16 with the Files app

The ability to change file extensions is undoubtedly one of the most significant changes to the Files app with iPadOS 16. Previously, the only way to accomplish this was through the use of third-party apps. Here’s how to modify a file extension in iPadOS 16 using Apple’s Files app:
  1. On your iPad, launch the Files app.
  2. Select the Organize Folders option (between the New Folder and Select buttons).
  3. Select View Options.
  4. Select the Show All Extensions checkbox.
  5. To rename and change the extension of a file, press, and hold (or right-click) on it.
