How To Use Face ID On An iPhone

Facial recognition, the successor to fingerprint scanning, aids in the elimination of the need for passwords and passcodes. While passwords are still widely used, biometric technologies make it easier to enter them in front of prying eyes. Face ID is Apple’s version of facial recognition, and it’s both secure and quick.

The iPhone X was Apple’s first smartphone with facial recognition, which replaced both the Home button and the Touch ID sensor. This technology is available on the X Series, 11 Series, 12 Series, and 13 Series.

This guide will show you how to set up and use Face ID on an iPhone to get the most out of this useful technology. We also show you how to enable and disable Face ID for specific apps, as well as turn off the attention requirement.

Face ID’s secure authentication functions with the TrueDepth camera on the iPhone, which can accurately map the geometry of your face. Encryption is used to protect Face ID data. Face ID is compatible with the following iPhone and iPad Pro models.

  • iPhone X, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, or iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, or iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro, or iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13 Pro, or iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • 11-inch iPad Pro (1st and 2nd generation)
  • 12.9-inch iPad Pro (3rd and 4th generation)

How to Set Up Face ID on an iPhone

When a compatible iPhone first boots up, it prompts you to enable Face ID as part of the initial setup process. It entails slowly rotating your head to capture your face’s various angles and contours. This must be done at least twice, but it is a quick and easy process.

To better support masks, iOS and iPadOS now support an “alternate” appearance. As a result, you can create one appearance without a mask, one with a mask, and several with different glasses. This “alternate” feature is also useful for unlocking your iPhone while wearing dark sunglasses or sporting a new beard.

Assuming you did not activate Face ID during the initial setup, we show you how to do so whenever you’re ready. Face ID must recognize masks on an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 15.4 or later.

  • Step 1: Scroll down in the Settings app and tap Face ID & passcode.
  • Step 2: To proceed, enter your passcode.
  • Step 3: Select Face ID Setup.
  • Step 4: Place your face in front of your upright iPhone (portrait mode) and press the Get Started button.
  • Step 5: Make sure your face is visible within the circle and rotate your face as the animated screen instructs.
  • Step 6: Tap Continue to proceed to the second scan and follow the instructions for head rotation.
  • Step 7: Repeat the rotation of your face as directed.
  • Step 8: To finish, tap Done.

How to Create a Second Appearance

Enable this feature to unlock your iPhone while wearing a mask, dark sunglasses, a heavy beard, or any other variation that obscures your face. This prevents your iPhone from entering lockdown mode because it does not recognize you.

  • Step 1: Open the Settings app and scroll down to Face ID & Passcode.
  • Step 2: To proceed, enter your passcode.
  • Step 3: Select Create an alternate appearance.
  • Step 4: Place your face directly in front of your upright iPhone. Wear sunglasses or whatever else you think will be on your face, then position your mask so that it only covers half of your face, and then tap Get started. This setup does not necessitate the use of a mask.
  • Step 5: You can choose whether or not to use a face mask as part of your facial recognition.
  • Step 6: Tap Continue to go through a series of facial scans and rotate your head as directed. Repeated scans for various eyeglasses may be required.
  • Step 7: To finish, tap Done.

Attention features

Attention Aware Features and Require Attention for Face ID are Face ID refinements. Face ID requires you to look directly at the phone in order for Face ID to unlock the device. You can disable this setting if you need to unlock the device without looking at the screen.

Face ID is used by Attention Aware Features to determine whether you are facing the screen. The display will not dim if you are looking at the phone. The phone will also reduce the volume of alerts and minimize the size of notification popups.

  • Step 1: Go to Settings and select Face ID & Passcode.
  • Step 2: Select Require attention for Face ID, Attention aware features, or both. The color green indicates that the feature is enabled.

Face ID on an iPhone: How to Use It

Setting up Face ID on your iPhone is simple; using it is even simpler. Raise or tap your iPhone to wake it, then simply stare at it. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to load the Home screen once the phone recognizes your face and the little padlock icon unlocks.

If the iPhone does not recognize you, the padlock shrinks and a message appears that says “swipe up to unlock.” Once you do, enter your passcode and the phone returns to the Home screen. This is why creating a passcode is critical.

When you enable Face ID for App Store purchases, you’ll be prompted to double-tap the iPhone’s Side button to purchase apps. This will then enable Face ID, requiring you to look at your iPhone. The same is true for Apple Pay purchases, though you’ll have to hold your iPhone close to a store payment terminal after using Face ID.

If you want to use Face ID for purchases and password auto-filling, do the following to ensure that Face ID is enabled for these tasks.

  • Step 1: Go to Settings and then select Face ID & Passcode.
  • Step 2: Make sure the following options are turned on (green): Apple Pay Password AutoFill iPhone Unlock iTunes & App Store
  • Step 3: Tap Other apps to display a list of third-party apps that support Face ID, as well as apps that support Touch ID.
  • Step 4: To enable (green) or disable Face ID, tap the toggle next to each app.
