How To Hide Caller ID On iPhone

If you want to hide your phone number when calling someone on your iPhone, you have a few options. This post will go over these options and demonstrate how to hide your caller ID and call someone without revealing your phone number.

Hide your caller ID for all incoming calls

This is probably the most convenient of the three options we’ll look at today. To make your phone number private, open the Settings app on your iPhone and go to Phone > Show My Caller ID.

Your phone number will be hidden for all new calls made from your iPhone, even if you call people in your contacts.

If the Show My Caller ID switch in iPhone Settings is grayed out and unusable, it means that your carrier does not support hiding caller ID this way. Use a special block code to hide your caller ID or contact your carrier.

If this does not work for you, make sure to read the FAQs.

Make use of a caller ID block code

If you don’t need a long-term solution and just want to call someone without showing your phone number, you can block your caller ID on a per-call basis by using a special code as a prefix to the number you want to call.

In the United States, that code is *67. That code is #31# in some European countries.

These codes are unique to each country (and carrier). So your best bet is to Google “caller ID block code in Australia” or whatever country you’re in. This Wikipedia page also contains caller ID block codes for several countries.

It’s as simple as dialing your block code followed by the phone number you want to call once you know it. In the United States, for example, you would dial *67 408-996-1010.

As previously stated, this is a code that should be used on a per-call basis. It’s especially useful if you don’t want to hide your caller ID on all outgoing calls, but rather on a specific call to a specific recipient.

At the carrier level, make your phone number private

Depending on your carrier, you may be able to disable caller ID at the account level. To find out, call your carrier or check its website or app to see if the option is available to you.

However, make sure to inquire about any potential fees, as some carriers continue to charge for this basic feature. Because of this, and because it requires more effort to implement, this is my least favorite method of blocking caller ID, but it is an option.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hiding Your Caller ID

Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about hiding your caller ID.

Is it possible to hide caller ID in all countries and with all carriers?

The ability to hide caller ID is not available everywhere – at least not through simple methods. Furthermore, not all carriers support this. Even if a carrier supports hiding caller ID, the process for doing so may differ.

For example, Verizon and Sprint may only allow you to hide the caller ID by using their website or contacting them. When you disable caller ID through the iPhone Settings app, it may not work.

Is it legal to conceal your phone number?

In the United States, courts have ruled that it is legal to conceal your caller ID. However, hiding your caller ID is illegal if your motivation is malicious, such as causing harm, committing fraud, or cheating.

Telemarketers are not permitted to conceal their caller ID for the sake of transparency.

Can I call emergency numbers while concealing my caller ID?

Even if you have hidden your caller ID, your phone number will still be visible if you call 911 or most customer service.

Why am I unable to make calls when the caller ID is turned off?

Some carriers prohibit you from making calls with your caller ID turned off. For example, I turned off caller ID on my iPhone a while ago, and calls failed almost instantly. Everything returned to normal after I enabled Show Caller ID.

My caller ID is hidden, but my phone number still appears when I call someone!

This is because hiding caller ID is not available in your country, state, or carrier. It’s also possible that the method you used to conceal caller ID isn’t supported by that carrier. For example, with my country’s largest carrier, even after I turn off Show My Caller ID in iPhone settings, the recipient still sees my phone number. In a nutshell, nothing happens.

The most secure method of hiding your caller ID is to use your carrier’s app or website or to contact them directly. They may inquire as to why you are doing so. Make certain you have a valid reason.

Is it possible to hide caller ID for free?

You can, indeed, hide your caller ID for free. It is, however, best to confirm with your carrier.

Is there another option if I can’t hide my caller ID?

If none of the methods mentioned here or on other sites work to hide your caller ID, you can:

  • Use third-party apps: You can try apps that provide you with a second phone number or allow you to make calls using an anonymous number without disclosing your personal information. The majority of these services are compensated. Hushed, Burner and Text Free are a few examples.
  • Change your phone number: Speak with another carrier and explain that you want to switch from your current carrier to theirs to hide the caller ID. If they agree, this is one option you could consider.
