How to Free Up Storage Space On iPhone

Because of the massive capacities available in new models, you may never have to worry about running out of space again the next time you upgrade your iPhone.

But, for the time being, if your phone is running dangerously low on storage, don’t worry: here’s how to clear storage on your iPhone.

How to Determine How Much Space Is Left on an iPhone

The first thing you should do is figure out how much space you have left.

  1. Launch the Settings application.
  2. Select General.
  3. Select iPhone Storage.
  4. You may need to wait a few moments, but a graph at the top of the screen should show how much free space you have and what’s using up your memory (media files, apps, photos, and so on).
  5. Under the Recommendations heading, you’ll find suggestions on how to increase iPhone storage. Tap a suggestion to see what Apple suggests.

How to Make More Space on Your iPhone

After you’ve determined how much storage space you have remaining on your iPhone and what’s taking up the most space, it’s time to take the necessary steps to free up some of it.

Remove all non-essential apps

Non-essential apps are those that you use infrequently and could probably do without. On the iPhone Storage screen, you can select them.

  1. Launch the Settings application.
  2. Select General.
  3. Select iPhone Storage.
  4. Wait for the apps to load beneath the graph displaying how much storage space you have remaining. When they do, the apps will be listed in order of size, from largest to smallest.
  5. Scroll down to Last Used to see which apps you haven’t used in a while.
  6. If you haven’t used the app in a while and it’s taking up too much space, tap it to see the app’s size and how much data it’s storing on your iPhone.
  7. Select whether to delete the app and all of its data or to temporarily remove the app from the iPhone.

Offload App removes the app from your phone while retaining all of its data. If you reinstall it later, the data will be preserved and you will be able to use it normally. This is a good option if you intend to use the app again; the app itself is large, but the data takes up very little space. Google Maps is a good example of this; the app is about 124MB, but the data is probably only a few megabytes.

Delete App removes the app as well as all of its data. This is a good option if the app’s data is significantly larger than the app itself, and there’s little benefit to deleting just the app — for example, Spotify if you download a lot of music, or the Music app itself.

Excess iPhone photos should be deleted or optimized

You can enable High-Efficiency mode for the photos you take with your camera on iPhone 7 or later to optimize them.

The image quality will not be affected, but each photo will require significantly less storage space. This may already be enabled, but it is worth double-checking.

  1. Launch the Settings application.
  2. Select Camera.
  3. Select Formats.
  4. Double-check that the camera capture mode is set to High Efficiency. If it isn’t, tap on it.

Remove music

If you have a large music library on your iPhone, you can free up a lot of space by pruning your library.

  1. Launch the Settings application.
  2. Select General.
  3. Select iPhone Storage.
  4. Locate the Music app in the list — if you have a large digital music library, it should be near the top — and tap it.
  5. Swipe left on an artist you want to unfollow and tap Delete. Alternatively, you can select the artists to delete specific albums or even individual tracks. You can see how much space each of these songs takes, which helps you choose. You can also remove multiple artists at once by selecting Edit.

Clear the cache in Safari

The cache in your web browser may be taking up a lot of space — all those temporary internet files add up.

If you clear your cache, you will be logged out of any websites you are signed into, and all of your cookies will be deleted. However, you can save dozens of megabytes by doing so.

  1. Launch the Settings application.
  2. Select Safari.
  3. Select the Clear History and Website Data options.
  4. In the pop-up, select Clear History and Data.

Delete any old messages

Unless you have a lot of texts with images attached, messages won’t take up much space.

However, if every megabyte counts, you can delete individual messages or entire conversations manually. You can also configure your iPhone to automatically delete older texts after a month or a year.

  1. Launch the Settings application.
  2. Select Messages.
  3. Select Keep Messages.
  4. On the next screen, select 30 Days or 1 Year to keep the messages for that period of time before deleting them.
  5. A pop-up will appear asking if you want to delete messages older than 30 days or one year, depending on your selection. To delete them, tap Delete; to keep them, tap Cancel.
