How Does An iPhone Work?

The iPhone from Apple is a pocket-sized computer that uses installed applications to do much more than make phone calls. To make and receive calls, you can use the iPhone’s built-in Phone app, supplement it with a VoIP app that allows free calling and messaging over the Internet, or use a better-performing third-party phone app.

Phone Function

To use an iPhone as a phone, you must first sign a contract or purchase a prepaid plan with a carrier for voice calls, Internet service, and, if desired, text messages. Whether you have a used or new iPhone, it must be compatible with the GSM or CDMA network of your carrier. Once you’ve selected a plan, you can use the iPhone’s Phone app to make and receive calls, check regular or Visual Voicemail, auto-reply and initiate call forwarding, call waiting, caller ID, call blocking, and conference calls. You can also personalize your ringtones and enjoy Siri-enabled hands-free calling, FaceTime video conferencing, and Do Not Disturb mode.

Exterior Features

As of June 2014, you can easily purchase an iPhone 5s or 5c model with 16, 32, or 64GB of storage from a phone retailer, the Apple Store, or Apple’s website – or get an 8GB iPhone 4s for free with a contract – from a phone retailer, the Apple Store, or Apple’s website. The 5s and 5c have a 4-inch touchscreen, while the 4s has a 3.5-inch display. The standard iPhone Home button, Sleep/Wake button, Ring/Silent Switch, volume buttons, speaker, headset jack, camera lenses, microphones, and connection port are all present in both models. The metal band around the edges of the iPhone – or under the plastic casing of the 5c – serves as the device’s cellular antenna. On all GSM iPhones and CDMA iPhone 4s and later models, a SIM card containing your phone number and calling plan details is stored in a side slot.

Hardware for the Interior

The more recent the model of your iPhone, the more advanced its mobile chip and the faster its performance. The iPhone connects to your carrier’s voice and data networks wherever you go, but only the 5s and 5c models can use ultra-fast LTE networks. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS are three other wireless radios that can connect you to the Internet and other devices while also tracking your location. When you hold the phone close to your ear, a built-in proximity sensor turns off the touch screen and turns it back on as you move it away. The iPhone is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which can provide up to 10 hours of talk time on a single charge on a 5s.

Native Application Software

The iPhone comes with the iOS operating system, which includes a plethora of native apps. Apple updates them regularly to add new features and fix bugs; you can install these updates from the Settings app. While iOS software governs the overall behavior of the iPhone, core apps enable a variety of functions. Aside from the basic Phone function, core apps such as Mail, Messages, and FaceTime can assist you in communicating. Safari assists you in navigating the Web, whereas Maps provides directions in the real world. You can avoid using core apps in favor of App Store alternatives.
