Here’s Everything We Know About The OLED iPad

Apple is said to be working on an OLED iPad after introducing iPads with LCD and mini-LED display technologies over the last decade. While competitors already offer tablets with OLED displays, here’s why Apple is taking so long, why it’s planning to do so now, and which models will benefit from the perfect blacks that this technology provides.

Why is Apple now preparing an OLED iPad?

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that the first OLED iPad would be released in 2022, but later stated that this plan had been scrapped. According to a later report, Apple is still planning to release an OLED iPad shortly.

Ross Young of DSCC recently discussed why Apple decided to manufacture an OLED iPad after all these years, and the answer is quite simple. Costs are decreasing. Young believes that, in the coming years, not only will the performance of OLED panels improve due to tandem stacks and phosphorescent blue emitters, but costs will also fall from larger fabs.

When can we expect an OLED iPad to be released?

According to DSCC Ross Young, Apple will prioritize this type of iPad beginning in 2024. According to a report from last year, Apple is gradually transitioning through four types of display technology for its products.

It began with IPS LCD with conventional backlighting, progressed to IPS LCD with miniLED backlighting, which is now used on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, and will soon be followed by OLED.

According to the report, the first OLED iPad – and possibly an OLED MacBook – will be released between 2023 and 2026. Currently, 2024 appears to be the sweet spot for the iPad and 2026 for Macs.

Apple will finally switch to microLED after this transition:

Despite the name’s similarity to miniLED, this is an entirely different technology. It’s essentially a more advanced version of OLED. It’s brighter, more energy-efficient, and doesn’t burn in. Apple’s interest in microLEDs dates back to at least 2014, and while there have been some signs of progress, this technology is still in its infancy. As with OLED, it’s likely to first appear on the Apple Watch, followed by the iPhone, iPad, and Macs in that order.

Which iPad models will have an OLED display?

When analyst Ming-Chi Kuo first said Apple was working on an OLED iPad, he expected the company to first bring this technology to the iPad Air, then to the base model iPad and iPad mini, because the miniLED technology would be focused on the iPad Pro.

However, since DSCC Ross Young stated that this technology will advance significantly in the coming years – as well as become more affordable – it stands to reason that Apple could be preparing a new generation of iPad Pro with an OLED display, followed by the other iPads.

Apple, for example, is said to offer various types of OLED panels for the 14 series iPhone. According to the Elec:

According to TheElec, Samsung Display will use different grades of materials on the OLED panels it will manufacture for the upcoming iPhone 14 series depending on the model tiers.

According to sources, it will use its most recent and advanced material set for the higher-tier iPhone 14 models, while it will use its previous generation set for the lower-tier models. According to them, the move is being made to save money.

With that in mind, it stands to reason that the company will follow the same pattern with its entire iPad lineup.

Wrap up

Apple will not release an OLED iPad for at least a couple of years. While the time has not yet arrived, the company is expected to release another iPad Pro with miniLED technology.
