Google Pixel 8 Wish List: 5 Ways It Could Outperform The Pixel 7

Google has an opportunity to improve on the Pixel 7 with the Pixel 8 next year.

The Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro may still be fresh off the assembly line, but both phones have received positive feedback from us and other reviewers. But that doesn’t stop me from looking ahead to 2023 and wondering what Google can do to elevate its flagship smartphones even further.

The Pixel 8 is unavoidable, as Google shows no signs of slowing down in the smartphone business — quite the contrary. So, while the next Pixel is in the works, I’m hoping that some of the following wishlist items will become a reality.

Here are my expectations for the Pixel 8.

Increased battery life

Google appears to struggle with battery life, as evidenced by the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series’ short lifespans. The Pixel 7 Pro barely lasts 8 hours on Tom’s Guide battery life test, even with a 5,000 mAh power pack. That’s unfortunate.

I believe Google should focus more on Tensor’s power efficiency. So, for the Pixel 8 and Tensor G3, I’d like to see significantly improved battery life. But then, I said the same thing last year, and look where that got me.

Charges more quickly

The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro support wired fast charging up to 30W. That’s faster than Apple’s 20W but slower than Samsung’s 45W and much slower than what OnePlus and Xiaomi provide for their phones.

I’d like to see even 65W for the Pixel 8. If the battery life does not improve, Google could at least give us the option of charging the phone quickly.

Improved performance

Tensor G2 is a significant upgrade over its predecessor. It provides significantly improved performance, particularly in gaming. However, Tensor continues to lag behind its Qualcomm and Apple Silicon counterparts — in the latter’s case, significantly. I’d like to see improved performance from the Tensor G3’s CPU and GPU.

The TPU, or Tensor Processing Unit, on Google’s silicon, is certainly impressive, thanks to all of the cool things it can do. I’m hoping that the Tensor G3 continues to push the boundaries of what a smartphone can do with AI and machine learning. Seriously, Photo Unblur and Magic Eraser (a Pixel 6 carryover) are simply stunning features. I believe the Pixel 8 will continue this trend.

Display illumination

The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro improved on the previous generation’s display brightness. In our testing, both phones exceeded 900 nits, which is excellent. However, when compared to the iPhone 14 Pro and Galaxy S22 Ultra, which both exceed 1,000 nits and approach 1,500, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro appear dim.

To compete with Apple and Samsung, I’d like to see Google use an even brighter panel for the Pixel 8.

50MP RAW

Apple fitted the iPhone 14 Pro with a 48MP main sensor, which also allows you to shoot RAW photos at the full 48MP resolution. This unlocks some fantastic editing and cropping capabilities for some truly stunning photos. The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro both have a 50MP Samsung GN1 main sensor, but RAW photos are limited to 12.5MP pixel-binned images.

I want the Pixel 8 to be able to capture the full 50MP in RAW. It’s a feature I’ve enjoyed using on the iPhone 14 Pro, and I’d love to see Google catch up to Apple in this area of photography.

The Pixel 8’s Future

We’re a year away from the Pixel 8, so Google has plenty of time to figure out how to improve on the Pixel 7. For the time being, I’m enjoying the Pixel 7 Pro — it’s difficult to choose between it and the Galaxy S22 Ultra for the title of best Android phone, as you can see in my Pixel 7 Pro vs. Galaxy S22 Ultra comparison. The Pixel is incredible.

However, battery life remains my main concern with the Pixel 8. Google must solve this problem. Whatever the underlying cause, the Pixel 8 must have a longer battery life if people are to take Google’s flagship phones seriously.

For the time being, this is a wishlist, but Google may implement some of it. We’ll just have to wait and see.
