Apple announced new iPad models this week, as well as a new generation Apple TV 4K. However, recent rumors suggest that the company has been working on new Macs, including the next generation Mac mini with the M2 chip. Continue reading to learn everything we know about the new Mac mini.
Mac mini’s current state
The Mac mini is the most affordable Mac in Apple’s lineup. It is a small desktop computer that does not include any peripherals because it can be connected to any keyboard, mouse, and display. Because of its form factor, the Mac mini has become extremely popular for server-related uses, and it’s also a good option for people looking for their first Mac computer.
In November 2020, the current generation Mac mini, also known as the M1 Mac mini, was released. While the design is similar to previous models, the most recent Mac mini is powered by Apple’s M1 chip.
It comes standard with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, but users can upgrade to 16GB of RAM and 2TB of storage via Apple’s online store. Surprisingly, Apple still sells a Mac mini with an Intel processor and up to 64GB of RAM. Again, this model was probably kept in the lineup until now because the Mac mini is a popular server choice.
In the United States, the Mac mini starts at $699.
Rumors about the M2 Mac mini
Along with the M1 MacBook Air and M1 MacBook Pro, the M1 Mac mini was introduced. While the M2 chip was already installed in these two MacBook models earlier this year, the Mac mini is still waiting for an upgrade with Apple’s latest chip. There are also numerous rumors regarding the next generation of Apple’s compact desktop computer.
9to5Mac first revealed details about the new Mac mini in March. Apple has been working on at least two new versions of the computer, according to our sources. One of them, codenamed J473, will be powered by the M2 chip, which has an 8-core CPU and a 10-core GPU, similar to the chip found in the 2022 MacBook Air.
As previously stated, the performance gains of the M2 chip over the M1 are not particularly impressive. Of course, those coming from older Macs or PCs with Intel processors will notice a greater difference.
However, 9to5Mac has learned from sources that Apple intends to release a more powerful version of the Mac mini. This Mac mini, codenamed J474, will be outfitted with a faster M2 Pro chip – a variant of the M2 with a 12-core CPU that has yet to be announced. This is likely the same chip that will power the rumored new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models.
According to YouTuber Jon Prosser, Apple will use a new, even more compact industrial design for this more powerful Mac mini model. It’s unclear whether this new design will also be available on the entry-level M2. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman also confirmed rumors of new Mac minis with M2 and M2 Pro chips in the works.
When will it be publicly released?
There aren’t many details or rumors about when Apple will officially announce the new M2 Mac mini. There are, however, some hints pointing to a release later this year.
Gurman claimed a few days ago that Apple intends to release new MacBook Pro models “in the near future.” The journalist also mentioned the new M2 Mac mini briefly, suggesting that the new Macs will be announced in November. Apple is also rumored to be planning a special event in 2022 to announce the first Mac Pro with an Apple Silicon chip.
