This week, Apple updated over a billion devices, including Windows PCs.
While we wait for new MacBook Pros and Mac minis, Apple provided us with plenty of new toys to play with this week. This week, nearly every device Apple has made in the last eight years received a major software update, whether you have a new M2 MacBook Air or are still using your iPhone 6s.
iPhone and iPad
iOS 16.1
- Compatible devices: iPhone 8 and later
- Security patches: 34
- Notable updates: iOS 16.1 is the first major update to iOS 16, which was released in September for iPhones. It includes features that were not included in the original release, such as iCloud Shared Photo Library, Live Activities, and Clean Energy Charging.
iPadOS 16.1
- Compatible devices: iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 5th generation and later, iPad mini 5th generation and later
- Security patches: 34
- Notable updates: Because iPadOS 16.1 is the first release of iPadOS 16 for the iPad, it contains a slew of new features. The most notable change is the addition of a new app organizer called Stage Manager, which brings desktop-class multitasking to Apple’s tablets.

- Notable updates: Only security updates are included in the Big Sur 11.7.1 update.

- Notable updates: For the Apple Watch Series 8, SE 2, and Ultra, watchOS 9.1 includes a new outdoor workout battery extender.
Apple TV and HomePod

- Notable updates: tvOS 16.1 adds a redesigned Siri experience, Fitness+ support without an Apple Watch, and iCloud Shared Photo Library.

- Notable updates: The new smart home protocol Matter is now supported by HomePod software version 16.1.

- Notable updates: Passkeys, web push notifications, and Apple Pencil Hover are all supported on the M2 iPad Pro.

- Notable updates: In iOS 16 and macOS 13, the iWork apps received support for the new collaboration, Stage Manager, and other features.

- Notable updates: Support for the new iPad and iPad Pro, as well as security updates, are included in iTunes 12.12.6.
