Common Air Conditioner Issues That Can Be Resolved At Home Without The Assistance Of A Technician

Air conditioners are rarely used as the season’s change. People are now more eager to cover the AC until the next summer arrives. We bring you a number of tips for repairing and inspecting your air conditioner at home without the assistance of a technician.

The seasons have changed, ushering in a period of unpredictable weather and cooler, humid, or warmer temperatures. When the weather changes dramatically, your air conditioning units will tend to run longer and work much harder than usual. These periods of low or excessive machine usage can have a negative impact on the efficiency of your air conditioning system, resulting in poor performance and higher energy bills.

In regions with distinct seasons, there may be months when the air conditioner is not in use, so it is important to ensure that it is operating properly and as expected. While you have no control over whether there will be sun, rain, or snow, there is one thing you can do to ensure your indoor comfort during the upcoming season.

According to Gurmeet Singh, Chairman and Managing Director, Johnson Controls-Hitachi Air Conditioning India Ltd, here is a list of common air conditioner problems that can be easily fixed without the assistance of a technician.

Check to see if your air conditioner filters need to be cleaned

Perhaps the most common issue that affects the performance of your air conditioner in a variety of ways, but also one of the simplest to check and repair on your own. A dirty filter can cause a variety of problems, including low airflow from the unit, poor cooling when in use, a musty odor, an overheating unit, higher energy bills, and so on.

Fortunately, all of these can be avoided by regularly inspecting and maintaining the cleanliness of your unit’s filter.

  1. Check that the unit is turned off.
  2. Holding both sides of the front panel, gently open it and allow it to swing upwards.
  3. Locate the filters and pull them out of the unit by pulling them towards you.
  4. Use only room-temperature water to clean the filters. Any detergents used may cause filter deterioration.
  5. Allow the filters to dry in a shady area of the house. They may shrink if exposed to the sun or excessive heat. Also, ensure that the filters are completely dry to avoid mold or mildew issues.
  6. When the filters are dry, gently push them back into place, making sure the ‘FRONT’ mark is facing the front, and close the front panel.
  7. Reconnect the power and your unit is ready to use.

Have the proper temperature settings been chosen?

Though it may appear simple, incorrect temperature settings can result in interrupted cooling and heating. This can happen if the air conditioner mode is not changed from heating to cooling (or vice versa) to match the temperature change.

  • If you’ve checked the temperature settings and the temperature still isn’t what you want, make sure the thermostat isn’t in direct sunlight.
  • If you notice that temperatures are fluctuating and the air conditioner is cycling on and off due to changing ambient conditions, opt for ventilation to keep the house cooler.

The air conditioner isn’t working

Can you check your power supply depending on the type of system you have at home and its installation? Before calling for technical assistance if the system shows no signs of activity and will not turn on, check the breaker box to see if the system has tripped.

An air conditioner can trip for a variety of reasons, including operational strain caused by dirty filters. When this occurs, one of the first things you should do is check the breaker box and turn the switch off and on again.

Consider whether new electrical products have been installed since the air conditioner was last used and whether this is putting a strain on the power consumed in your home.

Furniture causes poor air distribution throughout the space

This is especially true in homes with ducted air conditioning systems. Make sure that air vents (both return and supply) are open and not blocked by furniture or items.

Covering vents with large pieces of furniture (sofas, cupboards, rugs, drapes) means that the air in your home cannot circulate effectively and is trapped in the spaces between the vent and the item, resulting in energy waste.

To avoid problems, leave at least 10-inches between the vent and any large items. This also applies to wall-mounted air conditioners, where tall items of furniture can have the same effect on the air flowing out of the unit.

These four common issues are simple enough to troubleshoot on your own, but keep in mind that if the solutions suggested above do not work or the problem posed is complex, contact the official technical service team, who will be able to solve your air conditioner problems guaranteed.
