What’s new on the TI-Nspire side?
First, version 4.0 of the TI-Nspire operating system was released last year. This update was available for the TI-Nspire CX and the TI-Nspire CX CAS. This update may appear minor in appearance, but it still had a significant impact. For the first time, old black and white screen calculators could not get this update. These calculator versions will remain locked in version 3.9 of the operating system.
The new version 4.0 is composed of a set of regular updates and available regularly, but I will come back to it later. I warn you because the non-CX models of the TI-Nspire are significantly cheaper, but you take a real risk of being excluded from the cycles of updates shortly.
Nevertheless, the TI-Nspire environment remains one of the most complete regarding functionalities. Most mathematics teachers and mathematics students at the university own it. A few years ago now, Texas Instruments released an iPad application containing the main features of the TI-Nspire. Even at about thirty euros, I had already advised the purchase of this form, although this does not replace a TI-Nspire CX.
Even without the recent updates, I already found that the TI-Nspire stood out among the Texas Instruments calculators. From an educational point of view, she has no equal, and the TI-84 and other TI-89 are a tone below. The user interface has everything from a modern interface, and young people who grew up with the Internet are easily found there: drop-down menus, tabs, move-and-paste function, file management. We find the characteristics of a computer and a modern Internet browser. The graphical calculations have been made as simple as possible: no need for a lot of settings because the calculator automatically detects the minimum and maximum values to display.
But what makes Nspire above others is its dynamic properties. You can very well have a graph, an equation, and a data table on one screen. If you move or modify data on the graph, the equation and the table containing the data update immediately.
In fact, since the 3.2 update of the TI-Nspire operating system, Texas Instruments has offered students and faculty everything they’ve been waiting for. The new updates are a (very appreciable) bonus. This 3.2 update has mainly brought graphic improvements. This does not happen very often since the battery is rechargeable but never knows, it would be a shame to put the calculator in the trash just because of the battery.
Texas Instruments also sees teacher training as very important. I had the chance to attend several fascinating online presentations where the capabilities of the calculators, and especially the TI-Nspire, are used to the fullest.

The TI-Nspire CX was all the rage when it was released as Texas Instruments’ first color graphing calculator. But that’s not all; it came out with a significantly improved design: smaller, thinner, lighter than her big sister, she has one step ahead. The screen is impressive compared to its big sister the TI-Nspire: the resolution is excellent, the colors brilliant and the screen easy to read.
I love the Prizm from Casio, I think you’ve understood by browsing this site, but the screen of this TI-Nspire CX is a level above. The backlight of the screen makes it readable in a bright room. We feel that everything has been thought for maximum comfort of the user.
I quickly compared the display of images (JPG, BMP or PNG files) on the TI-Nspire CX and non-CX. The images make very good on both models: colors and black and white. I did not put a photo of this comparison on this site because taking pictures does not reflect the quality of the images. A test passed successfully for both models.
The interactivity of the new Nspire CX is also slightly better: buttons respond faster, and menu navigation is slightly better. This is due to a set of improvements in the operating system, but also hardware.
With this new TI-Nspire CX, interchangeable keyboards are becoming outdated. The TI-Nspire CX cannot be used as a TI-84 Plus as it was possible on other TI-Nspires. Texas Instruments commented on this change by saying that the Nspire CX should be used as a TI-Nspire CX and no longer as a calculator from a previous generation. You have to accept the change and get used to the new features. The result is excellent.
Comparative TI-Nspire CX vs. TI-Nspire CX CAS
In case you have not read it in our graphing calculator presentation, CAS stands for Computer Algebra System. CAS is a function to perform manipulations in mathematical equations of the type: x + x = 2x. The TI-Nspire CX and the TI-Nspire CX CAS look very similar to this feature. They have a lot in common with the calculator and the operating system. Even after some time spent with you, you could always confuse them.
The TI-Nspire CX CAS, however, has some additional menus and some CAS-related features that the Nspire CX does not have.
TI-Nspire vs. CX CAS vs. TI-89 Titanium
For student students at the university, I would recommend the TI-Nspire CX CAS rather than the TI-89 Titanium. The TI-89 Titanium is a very good calculator, do not get me wrong. But the TI-Nspire CX CAS is easier to handle, the user interfaces easier to handle. It’s easier to make graphing, especially in 3D where rendering is better.
For college and especially high school students, the TI-Nspire CX CAS and the TI-89 are both very good choices. As I said above, the user interface is slightly better on the TI-Nspire CX CAS so why not opt for this one.
Conclusion on TI-Nspire CX
From the beginning, I was impressed by the speed with which students managed to take it in hand, including basic functions such as fractions, graphs, and tables of data.
The TI-Nspire CX and TI-Nspire CX CAS are not the cheapest graphics calculators, but they are worth their price. These are very, very good graphing calculators. When Texas Instruments launched its TI-Nspire lineup, some people wondered why so many changes while Texas Instrument already had a range of TI-89 that worked well. But, with the time and constant improvements of Texas Instruments on the operating system, TI-Nspire has gradually dethroned other IT to find a place among the best graphing calculators.
With TI-Nspire, students spend less time on their calculators and more time learning math. The Texas Instruments update platform has now arrived at a near perfect stage.
