Impure skin, even during pregnancy
After pregnancy, normalizing the hormone balance usually the skin picture, during pregnancy, the symptoms can be alleviated by appropriate measures. However, the blemishes may persist even during breastfeeding.
Pregnancy acne by hormones
During pregnancy, the metabolism is in full swing and more male sex hormones are being produced. These hormones, called androgens, stimulate the activity of the glands – including the sebaceous glands. To a certain extent, sebum keeps the skin supple and soft, giving it a radiant look. However, if too much sebum is produced, gland ducts and pores clog – the skin becomes impure.
The blockages make the discharge of sweat and waste more difficult, and more and more propionibacteria accumulate. This, in turn, leads to inflammation in the form of pimples. You can do nothing against the production of androgens and the increased production of sebum, but pregnancy acne can be relieved.
Hygiene is essential – but right
If you suffer from blemishes and pimples during pregnancy, you should clean the affected parts twice a day. Use a mild, pH-neutral detergent with a value between 5.5 and 6.5.
Preferably, the hands are used for cleaning. If you prefer to use a washcloth, you should not use it more than once because bacteria can settle on it, causing it to come in contact with the repeated use.
As support, peels are recommended twice a week to release pore blockages, allowing the sebum to drain better. It is advisable to gently blot the skin after cleansing, instead of rubbing it dry, as this will restore the trough and dead skin to the pores.
What you should avoid
Avoid fat and oily care products – the production of sebum already increases the fat content of the skin. Some women treat pimples in the evening with toothpaste to dry them out. However, the skin dries out, as a result, it is additionally loaded, further pimples can be the result.
You should also refrain from expressing the pimples: The sebum from the upper part of the pores is removed, but deeper-seated sebum is pushed further into the skin. As a result, the centers of inflammation shift to deeper layers, the pimples are harder to treat and scars can remain.
Application of medical care products
Even if the treatment of the pregnancy acne occurs only externally, the choice of a medical product should be coordinated with the doctor. The ingredients penetrate the skin and are in danger of harming the unborn child.
So you should avoid products containing tretinoin, benzoyl peroxide, tetracyclines or clindamycin. Particular caution has been reported with isotretinoin. Alcohol-containing products not only irritate the skin unnecessarily: Through the mother’s circulation, the alcohol can reach the unborn child and cause permanent damage, depending on the amount.
Feel impaired by blemishes and pimples in your well-being; makeup can help. As with skin care products, make sure that they are not oil-based so as not to add more fat to the skin.
Water has a cleansing effect both internally and externally. Sufficient hydration helps the body to release pollutants, which are then transported outward through the skin and removed with daily cleansing.
In addition to hydration, diet plays a role in skin blemishes. A balanced supply of nutrients important to stabilize the weakened immune system during pregnancy and also benefits the health of the unborn child. Stress should be avoided if possible, and this can help to reduce acne symptoms.
