Safe Acne Treatment During Pregnancy

In pregnancy, the hormonal balance changes, which affects, among other things, the skin: Some women enjoy a pure, radiant-looking complexion, others suffer from impurities and pimples. The so-called pregnancy acne can develop regardless of whether you have previously had similar skin problems and occurs increasingly in the first trimester of pregnancy.

The blockages make the discharge of sweat and waste more difficult, and more and more propionibacteria accumulate. This, in turn, leads to inflammation in the form of pimples. You can do nothing against the production of androgens and the increased production of sebum, but pregnancy acne can be relieved.

Hygiene is essential – but right

If you suffer from blemishes and pimples during pregnancy, you should clean the affected parts twice a day. Use a mild, pH-neutral detergent with a value between 5.5 and 6.5.

Preferably, the hands are used for cleaning. If you prefer to use a washcloth, you should not use it more than once because bacteria can settle on it, causing it to come in contact with the repeated use.

Even if the treatment of the pregnancy acne occurs only externally, the choice of a medical product should be coordinated with the doctor. The ingredients penetrate the skin and are in danger of harming the unborn child.

So you should avoid products containing tretinoin, benzoyl peroxide, tetracyclines or clindamycin. Particular caution has been reported with isotretinoin. Alcohol-containing products not only irritate the skin unnecessarily: Through the mother’s circulation, the alcohol can reach the unborn child and cause permanent damage, depending on the amount.
