Nerf Cam ECS-12 Review – Nerf Cam ECS-12 Mod

The blaster with the complicated name (yes it comes twice Nerf in it) is to be the new flagship of the N-Strike Elite series. And the idea is great! Of course, it is practically a camera to a Nerf gun to tension and the idea of using this camera at the same time as a viewfinder/visor to earn already great praise. Youtube is just teeming with Go-Pro-Style videos capturing the adrenaline and emotions of the Nerf Battles. Since it is obvious to install a camera on the blaster – that was probably also Hasbro.

Nerf Cam ECS-12 Review

The concept of the Elite Nerf Cam ECS-12 earned already in 2014 at the conception great praise, however also connected with mockery. Why mock? Well to the one is the price very high (the most expensive nerf gun so far) and the other camera statistic is rather a * cough * meager. Crazy (!) 0.3 megapixel and fast 20 frames per second let 1995 still hearts beat up … 2019 looks something different.

Already betrayed, the Nerf Cam ECS-12 is a good blaster, but with a bad Cam. Hasbro grabbed a new sign for the elite series. The Nerf Cam ECS-12 is not an innovative blaster but has the slightly modified design of a Rapidstrike CS-18 and the inner life of a Stryfe.

The camera of the Elite Nerf Cam ECS-12

Since this is not a normal nerf gun, we deviate a bit from our usual concept. We will introduce the camera and the Nerf Cam ECS-12 separately.

The camera of the ECS-12 was exposed to many speculations and hopes, unfortunately, as wrong as we had to learn. The resolution of 0.3 megapixels is not contemporary, as is a 4: 3 aspect ratio (640 x 480 pixels) and 20 FPS. Very good, however, the processing and the operation of the camera has fallen. Here the N-Strike Elite Nerf Cam shines through a robust design and excellent usability – all buttons (4 + alternative assignment) are intuitive.

Unfortunately, not only did the recording quality raise an eyebrow – the sound is even worse. The roar of the engine and the launching noise of the darts is an infernal noise that cannot be filtered either. Every action and the moaning of the struck opponents goes under the sound of a launching jet, which makes battle scenes so to speak.

The included 4GB SD card holds for approximately 1.5 hours of film (indicated are 3 hours), but can easily be exchanged for an individual with more storage volume. We also liked that the camera is powered independently. The Elite Nerf Cam ECS-12 has two shafts for 4 AA batteries each. 8 Batteries to carry with oneself is, of course, a bit heavier, but you can decide for yourself if you want to equip both or only one compartment with batteries.

It is a pity that we have to spend only a few for a camera that we can not dismantle to use it for other best quality nerf guns. Here, reusability could have brought many positive points.

Handling and design

The handling and processing of the blaster are as usual good, stable material, and a good ergonomics distinguish the Nerf Cam ECS-12. It’s a pity only that the design at first glance does not differ from the Rapidstrike CS-18, something more innovation is appropriate for the price, we find. On the side of the Nerf, Cam ECS is bold in an “elite,” which indicates that the Nerf Gun belongs to the XD (Extra Range) series. The elite nerf guns allegedly make 90 American feet – which corresponds approximately 27 meters, angled and wind still mind you. The “elite” is somewhat childish in its size and withdrawal, which is however pure taste.

The Nerf Cam ECS-12 is a semi-automatic as well as the Rapidstrike and the Stryfe, whereby it contrasts with the Rapidstrike only 12 darts and not 18 (as indicated by the name). This means that it is in the middle and the player does not have the disadvantage to fear, on the contrary, modifications like the Bana clip even better. AK 74 and M16 magazines, as well as drum magazines, can be easily installed and used.

Furthermore, the Nerf Gun ECS-12 has a shoulder neck but can not be removed. It lies well in the shoulder but a bit wobbly since it is attached only with a few small screws.

In the test, the Nerf Cam ECS-12 has struck solid, not outstanding but tidy. So she takes it. 15.5-meter range (flat) and about 22 meters, when angled is shot down (indicated are 25 meters). We were very satisfied with the spread, this fraud with a flat shot only 1.5 meters – worse this then with the angled shot.

Worth mentioning is the good flight speed of 20 meters/second, which ensures the necessary stability and explains the low dispersion of the darts. Regarding fire speed, the Nerf Cam ECS-12 even makes the Rapidstrike competition! A 25-shot drum magazine can be emptied in incredible 5.5 seconds; the Rapidstrike requires 7 seconds. We were also delighted with the low susceptibility to jamming, which means a robust design.

Nerf Cam ECS-12 Mod

A good concept, perhaps even forward-looking, but unfortunately the camera was not implemented sufficiently well.

Nerf Cam ECS-12 at a Glance
  • Reach
  • Hit Accuracy
  • Fire Rate
  • Shoot Speed
  • Reliability

The ECS 12 is a really good blaster, but it did not quite make it to the new flagship of Nerf. In principle, you buy a more expensive nerf gun which is not much better than the demolisher nor the Rapidstrike is far superior and instead a rather useless camera offers. For the price, you get in comparison four Stryfe’s, of which you and the friends would probably have more. If you do not expect too much from the camera, you will still have a lot of fun with the Blaster, because it has achieved outstanding values.
