How to Relieve Lower Back Pain Fast – Lumbago

The sudden onset of severe pain in the lower back is commonly referred to as lumbago. Medically correct is called the pain attack in the lumbar spine acute lumbago or lumbago.

The lumbago

The person affected by the lumbago can barely move – characteristic is the knee-jerk taking a defensive posture. Because even the smallest movement hurts, the back muscles become more and more cramped. These cramps in turn increase back pain. Strains of the spine during everyday turning, lifting, straightening, bending over or even during sports are usually the cause of an acute lumbago. The result is usually extreme pain, causing the injured people to worry about a herniated disc. However, a herniated disc is rarely the direct trigger of an acute lumbago – rather, muscle strains and tight muscles are the main causes. Based on the typical symptoms and following a careful medical examination, the doctor will make the appropriate diagnosis. During the physical examination he will examine reflexes; the diagnosis can be verified by imaging techniques. In addition to anti-inflammatory analgesics, some muscle relaxants are used against the disease. Even a step bearing of the legs and heat pads provide for a relief of discomfort. A lumbago can also become chronic. In the case of chronic lumbago, a forward-looking strengthening of the back muscles is recommended. Suitable are physiotherapeutic treatments within the acute phase. If you then do targeted, continuous back training, you can prevent a new lumbago well. Suitable are physiotherapeutic treatments within the acute phase. If you then do targeted, continuous back training, you can prevent a new lumbago well. Suitable are physiotherapeutic treatments within the acute phase. If you then do targeted, continuous back training, you can prevent a new lumbago well.

The reasons

The causes are usually blockages of a joint of the lumbar spine, distortions and tension in the muscles, including the lower-lying, autochthonous back muscles. In poor posture or after abrupt movements, the spinal joints become caught and blocked. Nerve fibers are blocked and the severely painful lumbago appears. Rare causes of lumbago are inflammation, tumors or constrictions in the spinal area.

Why the exact diagnosis is important

During his careful examination, the doctor will use the patient’s correct information to diagnose lumbago and rule out a herniated disc that often requires surgical intervention. It is important to note the sensitivity in the legs and lumbar region. The doctor will check the existing motor function and the reflexes.
Sometimes further investigations are useful. If feelings of discomfort or paralysis cause suspicion of a herniated disc, it is possible:

  • blood tests
  • X-ray
  • ultrasounds
  • Computed tomography
  • MRI
  • Liquorpunktion

All diagnostic steps are aimed at finding the appropriate therapy. Because only when you have found the respective causes, you can relieve the pain and eliminate the disease.

How to relieve the pain

Once the causes have been established, their elimination is over. Blocked vertebral joints are treated with deblocking, i.e., the narrowing of the affected joint. This restores the mobility of the vertebrae. Orthopedists or expert therapists do deblock. To fight pain in lumbago itself, heat and exercise are used in addition to the drugs. Painkillers, anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxants such as NSAIDs and cortisone are used for the treatment of pain. The drugs can be taken in tablet form or injected directly. A so-called step bed storage can contribute to the resolution of the complaints: For this purpose, the patient lies down 20 to 30 minutes in a supine position on a firm, even surface. The legs are bent at 90 degrees. The lower legs are now placed horizontally on a stool or a chair. Due to this posture, the sciatic nerve and the muscles in the lumbar vertebrae are sustainably relaxed. The pain is relieved. First of all – depending on the causes diagnosed – warmth and protection up to bed rest, soothing. In the long term, however, targeted and sufficient exercise counteracts back problems. Within a so-called back school, different programs are offered. This includes: First of all – depending on the causes diagnosed – warmth and protection up to bed rest, soothing. In the long term, however, targeted and sufficient exercise counteracts back problems. Within a so-called back school, different programs are offered. This includes: First of all – depending on the causes diagnosed – warmth and protection up to bed rest, soothing. In the long term, however, targeted and sufficient exercise counteracts back problems. Within a so-called back school, different programs are offered. This includes:

  • Relaxation procedures, such as progressive muscle relaxation according to Jacobson
  • physiotherapy
  • chiropractic
  • occupational Therapy
  • massages
  • acupuncture

Relaxation techniques, gymnastics or massages relieve tension in the back, shoulders and neck. It is important that trained physiotherapists and masseurs perform the treatments. Mud packs also provide warmth and relaxation. However, they are inappropriate if inflammation triggers the pain. Acupuncture from TCM gently dissolves blockages and allows energy to flow. Trained osteopaths support the restoration of local functions. All treatments to alleviate pain and improve mobility should be made in consultation with the attending physician. The same applies to the sports activities to strengthen the back muscles. Back pain after delivery is a question for many mothers.

Sport for a strong back

Swimming is best. In addition to optimal relief, the back, legs and arms are trained. In acute neck pain, backstroke is particularly pleasant. But also Nordic walking, jogging on soft forest floors and with the right footwear, dancing and cross-country skiing are excellent sports for the sustained strengthening of the back muscles.
Not suitable sports with a fast pace and abrupt movements. These include tennis, golf, squash and snowboarding.

The back-healthy everyday life

Anyone who does not want lumbago and back pain to develop, sports and respects also in daily life on a lot of movement, on the right seating positions, postures and movements. Essential is a healthy, light and low-fat diet and a healthy mattress in bed.
