A writing baby can quickly become a nightmare for his parents. Around 20 percent of all babies drive their environment to despair by particularly frequent and prolonged screaming. Doctors and scientists speak of a writing baby if a child cries for more than three hours at least three days a week and this phenomenon continues for more than three weeks.

What to do if your baby screams too long
In the first three months of life, the screaming is usually particularly intense. This so-called “triple rule” was introduced in 1954 by the US physician Moritz Wessel. The reasons for this were in indigestion – the so-called three-month colic – suspected, which has now been refuted.
Meanwhile, the problems of these children are explored much more comprehensively than at that time. The causes of the screaming are often quite complex and, in essence, are that the children have difficulty shielding themselves from the multiple environmental stimuli. The Bochum child and adolescent psychologist Prof. dr. Silvia Schneider points out that especially the parents of writing-babies need help – many of them suffer from strong feelings of guilt because they do not know that the crying is usually caused by over-stimulation and a self-regulation disorder of their child.
Some parents feel the constant roar, against which nothing helps, at some point only helpless and stressed, which may set a vicious circle in motion: The tension of the parents is transferred to the child, which screams only the more intense. At some point, mother or father gets angry – every year between 100 and 200 babies die in Germany as a result of shaking trauma.
In modern pediatrics cry ambulances help both children and parents, to overcome their problems as soon as possible. The professional helpers can improve the situation for both sides with rest, attention and practical help very quickly.
Writing babies – difficulty in processing environmental stimuli
Writing babies scream particularly intense and shrill, with their legs drawn and clenched fists, crimson face and with an overstretched back. During the daytime, they find it difficult to rest and usually sleep no longer than about 30 minutes at a time. The cry attacks usually begin around the second week of life, continue to increase until the sixth week of life and end with the beginning of the fourth month of life. In a few cases, the yap is not over until the end of the first half year or even later. Often the appetite of writing babies leaves something to be desired.
When parents go to see a doctor with their writing baby, not too long ago, they assumed that the screaming would be self-evident after the “three-month colic” subsides. Meanwhile, it has been scientifically proven that the cause of this is only a few babies in digestive difficulties.
Only five to ten percent of the affected children suffer from food intolerances and, for example, cannot tolerate cow’s milk or soy protein in bottle feeding. An esophagitis or heartburn/reflux also plague the least of them. If writing babies have a bloating stomach, the cause is usually not in colic, but in the screaming itself – the belly puffs through the thereby swallowed air.
Scientists today assume that writing babies have problems with “life itself” or the natural self-regulation of their attention and bodily functions. Since the birth of every second numerous stimulus flow to them, which want to be processed, even a consistent rhythm between waking and sleeping must first develop.
More robust children will soon find a way to control their attention and sleep or turn off when overworked. By sucking on the fingers or the pacifier, they efficiently calm themselves. A writing baby has difficulties in these areas – it is susceptible to environmental stimuli, is often over-stimulated and sleeps less than other children. Sometimes it gets stressful when it needs to be fed or wrapped.
The causes of this hypersensitivity are not completely clear up to now. According to a survey of 1,600 mothers, Swedish scientists found that smoking pregnant women were about 1.7 percent more likely to get a writing baby than nonsmokers. Some researchers also suspect a connection between Schreibabys and strong emotional stress on the mother during pregnancy.
However, most writing babies are likely to make sure they do not calm down: often they are particularly attentive and alert, are interested in their environment earlier and more intensively than other children – and for the time being find it difficult to cope with the resulting stimuli.
Fixed daily routine, mitigation of environmental stimuli, rituals
As part of a detailed diagnosis, your pediatrician will first try to exclude all physical causes of crying – allergies, organic diseases, pain, hidden infections. After that, the main thing is to curb the flood of stimuli and to ensure that the daily routine is as regular as possible.
Patent recipes for how you bring your writing baby to rest, there is not. Fixed times for feeding, game s, give cuddling, sleeping and walking your baby in the still quite foreign world guidance and peace poles. Everyone to one and a half hours is called for breaks with such small children. A solid ritual – for example, an everlasting lullaby – may help your child find sleep easier.
Pay close attention to your child’s body language and signals. For example, if you show something to your baby and turn it away instead of caring for it, it’s likely to be tired or overwhelmed – and it may still be easy to calm down at that moment. Sometimes it helps to carry the baby around, or to lie quietly beside the child for some time and to calm it down by physical closeness.
The important thing is to stay calm – or as relaxed as you possibly can. The children perceive their tension and nervousness and often react with even more intense screaming.
Writing babies need a lot of closeness, affection and positive experiences. At the same time, they are more dependent than others on a low-stimulus environment and a fixed rhythm.
Scream ambulances – effective help for writing-babies and their parents
Understandably, this composure is not easy for many parents of a writing baby. It is good if you seek help before you are completely overwhelmed. Maybe the grandparents or friends can temporarily relieve you so that you come to yourself again. The supervising midwife can also support you in this situation for a short time. If you are pushed to your limits by the screaming at times, it is best to leave the room for a moment to calm down. Under no circumstances should you let your baby scream for a long time alone or even shake it because of your tension.
A scream ambulance provides effective professional assistance to you and your baby. The facilities are affiliated to pediatric practices, clinics and counseling centers. The therapists working there help you to correctly assess your child’s signals, to know when he or she is already feeling tired or overwrought, and how to play and communicate with your baby in his alert phases, without overstraining.
The children learn to develop their natural self-regulation through the therapy in a cry ambulance, parents find their inner strengths and resources again and overcome uncertainties or feelings of guilt. If you have a writing baby, please do not hesitate. Get professional help and look forward to the more relaxed and enjoyable time you will soon be having with your child.
