Moss in the lawn is a nightmare for the garden lover. A well cultivated, shortcut, velvety dense lawn as in the English parks should be it, and now it is rather a moss place. This is not beautiful, but also no inevitable fate. On the one hand, one must first know how to promote moss growth. It is either acid soil, lack of nutrients or a lot of moisture and shade when moss feels more comfortable than grass.
If the garden season starts in the spring, it is already possible to start the fight against moss. The first step is the scarification of the lawn. The moss felt is removed from the lawn with an iron rake or a so-called scarifier. This gives him air again, and the grass can grow. Normally this procedure should be repeated in autumn.
- Sand against moss
Are moisture and shadow the cause of moss growth helps to spread sand on the meadow. For this purpose, fine-grained sand is sprinkled onto the lawn and is interlaced or inverted. This makes the floor more permeable and drier. It is also worthwhile to use a special grass seed for, particularly shady lawns. The so-called shade lawn is not as wet as a usual lawn.
- Lime on acid soil
For acid soil, the pH of the soil should be improved with lime. A neutral soil makes moss grow much more sparsely. The dawning of the lawn should be done as soon as possible after the scarifying process. In the case of small lawns, lime can be spread by hand. In the case of large areas spreaders are suitable, which can be borrowed just like the scarifiers. After the liming, the lawn should be thoroughly watered.
- Effective fertilization
Also, the fertilization of the lawn is necessary to push back moss and weeds. A healthy, strong grass forms a dense grassy marsh and makes it difficult for the moss and weeds to penetrate. Bald spots in the lawn and weak vegetation, on the other hand, make them grow unhindered. It is best to use special long-term fertilizer because it provides the effective nutrient composition. Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium are the most important components of a raging fertilizer.
- Regular mowing
Lastly, the regular lawn mowing influence on moss formation. The Too short-blown lawn is weakened, too much time can form a wet, greasy layer when cutting and mulching. All in all, lawn maintenance is labor intensive but is very worthwhile.
