Aerocart Buying Guide
What is an aerocart?
A standard aerocart has a loading surface or trough, which is also referred to as a trough. Depending on the design of the model, such a cart is suitable for various work purposes. The texture or materials give the insight to verify which loads the aerocart is constructed. In general, the tray of the cart consists of sheet metal. This aerocart is also called “wheelbarrow.”
For about 100 years aerocarts have been made of wood, but predominantly metal. The materials in our aerocart comparison are now as diverse as the applications of transport aids.
- The trough
The loading area of the wheelbarrow is called a trough. Their size, structure, and arrangement in the frame determine the suitability for selected work purposes. Typically, the tray of sheet metal, which in the course of galvanized, to be less susceptible to corrosion. A little varnishing does not suffice here since even with the slight damage the surface would form rust. The varnishing should therefore only be performed in addition to galvanizing. Depending on the price category, the sheet is 0.8 to 1.0 mm rather thin-walled, from 1.0 mm robust and designed for heavy material.
Alternatively, some manufacturers also rely on full plastic, so-called polypropylene (short: PP). This is an odorless, skin-compatible thermoplastic, which is dimensionally stable and yet elastic.
- Tin bath
- Cannot break
- Resistant and stable in shape
- More balanced by higher weight with heavy load
- Plastic tubing
- Cannot buckle
- Unaffected by rust and weathering
Fiberglass, which is characterized by absolute shape-fidelity, is more rarely used. If you want to buy an aerocart cheaply, however, this material is not for you, because in the purchase, carts with this material are comparatively expensive.
- The framework
As our aerocart comparison shows, the galvanized metal is also used for the frame. In addition to galvanizing, the powder coating, also called plastic sheet, is used as a form of surface refinement. In this case, the component to be coated is first charged statically, then fogged with electrostatic powder, and then fired in the oven. Using the powder coating, it is possible to apply an unusually thick layer. In particular, to the material edges, this in turn protects against corrosion. However, this can at the same time be a disadvantage in areas in which particular precision and accuracy are required. Very rarely, manufacturers also use polypropylene to produce the frame. The advantage of this is the possibility to create more ergonomic shapes.
- The handles
Primarily handles for garden carts made of non-slip plastic. However, alternatives from wood are more environmentally friendly and ecologically friendly. They are also slip-resistant, because they are not sweat-inducing, but absorbing.
- The tire types
About the tires, one can choose between air pressure and solid rubber.
- Air ripening
- Low rolling resistance
- Dampens bumps and vibrations
- By air drain Increase the support surface possible for more adhesion on unstable ground
- Full-bodied maturation
- High load carrying capacity
- Minimal abrasion and long life
- Low purchase and maintenance costs
- Very resistant and resistant to chipping, even with thorns, nails and pointed stones
The bearing technology of the wheel is barely visible and yet not to be disregarded. A distinction is made between rolling and plain bearings. In the case of a plain bearing, the movable components are in direct contact with each other, and the friction resistance is reduced by lubrication.
- Low noise
- Shock and vibration-insensitive
- Higher wear
- Lower efficiency
- Should be more frequently greased
Rolling bearings also include roller and ball bearings. Rolling bodies (balls or rollers) are arranged between an inner ring and an outer ring to minimize the resistance. Ball bearings are distinguished by their special running stability, robustness, low maintenance and long service life. However, since they are more expensive to manufacture, they are only found in aerocarts.
- Low maintenance
- Low lubricant requirement
- Low friction, high efficiency
- Sensitive to contamination
- Higher noise
Last but not least, the wheels still vary regarding the rims used. These can be made of steel, aluminum, plastic or solid rubber. Here aluminum rims represent the high class and score with excellent stability and load-bearing capacity at a little weight but are only found at higher price levels.
Purchase criteria for aerocarts: You should pay attention to this
Always pay attention to the availability of spare parts when buying expensive building wagon bins.
- The hollow
Depending on the transported goods transportation, the professional can access a galvanized low or deep trough. Entry-level models have a volume of 60 to 90 liters with a recommended payload of 120 kg. Pure working equipment has volumes of more than 100 liters and can transport more than 250 kilograms of load.
If you want to transport liquid materials, make sure that the well is galvanized, waterproof and easy to clean. The aerocart of KARRO is convincing by its self-cleaning solder effect.
High-quality bathtubs have a flat inner surface so that delicate cargo such as cement bags is not damaged by sharp edges or top screws.
- The frame
At best, the frame is not only galvanized but also reliably welded instead of just screwed. Screws can become loose with time and form, as they protrude, a source of danger to the user. Complementary transverse braces or reinforcement in the shape of a metal plate directly underneath the additional torsion rigidity.
A so-called rollover or channel support bracket enclosing the wheel stabilizes & prevents the cart from rolling when tilted.
- The tires
The assembly of a bucket wheelbarrow with a wheel is standard. However, manufacturers have responded to the needs of professionals with two-wheeled aerocarts to avoid the transport of, particularly heavy goods.
- One wheel
- Narrow and maneuverable
- Unloading to the side possible
- Two wheels
- Balanced, tipping and lateral stability
- Suitable for particularly heavy loads
- More balanced load distribution prevents sinking on lose ground
For gardens with narrow passages or small garden houses, the somewhat more compact unicycle aerocarts are better suited. In curves, uneven terrain, steep slopes or on a narrow plank, they are also much easier to maneuver and more manageable when tipping out. However, the two-wheeler is the first choice for large-volume, heavy goods on flat ground.
An inexpensive garden bar is usually provided with plain bearings as well as recommendable air ripening. The air pressure that can be adapted to different conditions ensures variability and sufficient soil adhesion.
When choosing the wheel size, the following applies The larger, the more turbulent. Large wheels with a diameter of around 40 cm overcome obstacles, steps, and sloops with more ease and without the foot feet. They are also more suitable for transporting heavy objects. For light work in a small space, wheels with smaller diameters offer the necessary maneuverability.
Application and use
Important when loading: Most of the load is placed above the wheel to make it easier for the user. In the case of soft, muddy subsoil, it may be sensible to relieve the wheel and take the load closer to itself.
The best aerocart benefits when it has a low center of gravity. This ensures safe control and equal balance. If you want a lot of real stackable products, such as boxes or crates, transport, also can sack barrow be a sensible purchase.
- Very large plot
As suggested in our guidebook, the texture of the tub determines what your personal aerocart comparison looks like. If you have a large, level area to farm on which a lot of garden waste comes together, then we recommend with a view to various aerocarts tests a two aerocart with large load volume by 100 liters. This can be pushed more comfortable on longer distances.
- Big garden
For a garden with larger than 100 m², we advise you to buy a model with an approximately 80 liter galvanized trough. In our wheelbarrow comparison, the professional finds the best wheelbarrow!
- Small garden
With small areas of up to 100 m², the purpose is ultimately decisive – do I transport bulky items, or do I need a little garden assistant to carry tools, flower soil, green cut and the like?
If you are looking for a working machine to help you with more heavy construction and gardening, you should also take a galvanized aerocart. A volume of around 60 liters is your choice. For less difficult tasks, however, an alternative can be useful. Garden trolleys or garden carts can be used here. While a cart can be used especially for large and unwieldy objects, a trolley is particularly handy, light and can be stored in the garden house in a space-saving way. On the other hand, these companions are very tipping, and the wheels are often only made of thin plastic so that they can break in stair steps or cobblestone streets. Although they do not constitute a serious competition for a garden bar,
Types of Aerocart
- The bucket aerocart
The hammer has done its job, but transport like the debris? This is where the building wagon comes in. The trough of this bestseller aerocart is generally made of sheet metal. The channels are made of galvanized sheet metal, while lighter specimens are made of aluminum. Both are protected against corrosion. A bucket aerocart is characterized by the fact that its load capacity is higher than that of a garden aerocart. With an additional rust protection, a bucket aerocart can also stand outside or overwinter outside.
Note: The higher the weight of a metal aerocart, the better it can be balanced when heavy materials are carried in it.
- High load capacity
- Good balance
- For debris, stones, mortar or sand
- The garden aerocart
The wooden splitter has crushed the firewood for the winter, with the garden push cart you drive it quickly on the spot. Gardening carts usually also have a sheet metal or aluminum trough but are rather thin-walled. In the garden, it is not as difficult to transport materials as on a construction site.
Note: Strong branches or stones can lead to bumps in a thinner.
- Ideal for garden waste, composter or fertilizer
- Lower load
- The plastic aerocart
If you need an aerocart that is as light as possible, aerocarts made of plastic or fiberglass are ideal. The latter is a very light and dimensionally stable material, which, however, has its price. These types of aerocarts are watertight and weather-resistant. Depending on the plastic, they are also resistant to acids and alkalis, which makes them ideal for spreading salt in the winter.
Note: Plastic aerocarts are insensitive to bumps, but do not carry so much weight.
- Very easy
- Weather resistant
- Insensitive to salts and alkalis
Care and cleaning tips
As is often, care must not be neglected in the case of the aerocart, especially if you transport liquid goods such as mortar or concrete. Dirt otherwise settles from time to time, attacks the coating of the trough and makes loading or unloading more difficult. If you have only moved branches and foliage, you usually need a brush or a broom. Some water dissolves adhesive residues in the galvanized tub of the garden cart.
However, after a long working time with liquid building materials such as cement, more efficient methods have to be taken, in particular, to clean a metal substructure.
Do not use a hammer or the like to remove stubborn adherence, as the tubing will not only dented but also damage the zinc coating and make the aerocart vulnerable to corrosion. If you have a bucket aerocart with pneumatic tires, check the air pressure now and then and treat the bearings with some grease. If the rubber grips are worn out over time, bicycle or motorcycle handles can be used as comfortable hand tools.
The history of the aerocart
The first form of the aerocart can be traced back to ancient Greece. Thus there is evidence from the time around 400 BC on single- wheeled vehicles. Also in China of the third century, carts were used, but they had two wheels. In contrast to the carts of ancient Greece, the aerocart wheels were positioned in China under the center of gravity.
In the Middle Ages were also in Europe increasingly common aerocarts to use, probably at the time of the twelfth or thirteenth century. In earlier pictures, it can be seen that these aerocarts are probably a further development of the bearers. The wheel was relatively far from the start on the cart. Typical applications for these old aerocarts were mining, construction, and agriculture.
Especially in France, England and the Netherlands seem aerocarts to have been used until the 15th century into who was using but rather the exception. In earlier times, this European thrust or bucket aerocarts were predominantly made of wood. It was only in the 19th century that other materials were used. In 1822 an aerocart, made entirely of iron, existed. Around this time, the position of the wheel changed: Similar to the bar cars pulled by horses or mules with a drawbar, the aerocart wheel moved from the first point to the actual center of gravity of the load.
Since about 1950 the now lighter aerocarts have been equipped with an air- ripening system. Moreover, these models have a continuous sheet metal trough. They are suitable not only for general cargo, but also for loose cargo and for liquids.
The aerocarts of today are convincing by a consistently improved resistance to the weather. This means that they are resistant to cold and heat do not form rust and can be used as reliable companions for several years. Our aerocart review article provides information about the high- quality material combinations, about the optimal shaping as well as on the different applications of the models.
Questions and answers on the subject of aerocarts
- Are there aerocarts for children?
For “garden dwarfs” there are small panniers in the price range from 15 to about 80 EUR. Big names such as BOSCH and Gardena also manufacture high-quality outdoor tools for the small professional.
- Is there an aerocart with the drive?
In fact, if you fail to find the right aerocart tests, you can now use an electric aerocart or motorized aerocart for heavy tasks. They offer the advantage of being able to master steep ramps even without a swing and allow long climbs to become children’s play. To be able to match the device safely, some extensions are required about the equipment: a parking brake, as well as steering rollers instead of parking supports, is, for example, included.
If the one number is too small, you can grab a mini dumper directly. Moreover, the load is still so big – with a good five hp wheel drive one becomes every domestic burden master.
- Are there any useful accessories for aerocarts?
If you have a lot of foliage to rake in autumn and if the volume of the bucket aerocart is too small, then you can help a corresponding aerocart attachment, which can even triple the capacity of the galvanized aerocart. Alternatively, a volume increase can be achieved via a garden bag.
Using a water tank, aerocarts can even be used entirely for watering or filling water bodies – this makes it possible to tow many water reservoirs. The usual accessories include spare wheel, hose, and handles.
- Can you do sports with an aerocart?
Apart from the regionally famous aerocart races, one or other sportsman is trying to find the aerocart freestyle – here the proof in our aerocart comparison:
