The Best Waterproof Phones You Can Buy

The best waterproof phones were ugly in the past, but now they’re sleek devices that can withstand splashes and even be submerged without issue. In addition, many of the best smartphones currently available have some water resistance.

With a water-resistant phone, you can take pictures by the pool or use your device in the rain without worrying about damaging it. The IP67 or IP68 rating signifies that the device can withstand 30 minutes of submersion in water at varying depths.

Even the most water-resistant smartphones are impervious to water damage. Every device on this list and every smartphone available for purchase today that is considered water-resistant has an IP rating that indicates its level of ingression. The first digit in an IP rating relates to dust protection — a “6” means that the phone is dust tight, which is standard today — while the second pertains to liquid security. It would help if you searched for at least a “7” to indicate water resistance. Anything below that could mean that the device can withstand water sprays and splashes but not total submersion.

Our Top Picks

IP ratings and water resistance: essential information

The IP rating of an electrical device indicates how well it protects itself against dust, water, and dirt.

IP is an abbreviation for Ingress Protection, and the next two digits indicate the level and type of protection. The first digit denotes protection against solids, such as dust and sand, while the second digit denotes protection against liquids, such as water and other moisture.

The range of the first number is between 0 (no special protection) and 6 (total protection against dust). The second phone number ranges from zero (no special protection) to eight (can withstand being submerged in water up to 1.5m deep, up to 30 minutes). You may also encounter X, which indicates that no data or testing has been conducted to determine a rating.

Even with an 8 rating for resistance to liquids, this item is not entirely waterproof. It is more accurately described as water-resistant, meaning that although it will survive being submerged in water, there is always a chance of water entering your device if left in deep water for an extended period.

These days, most high-end smartphones have an IP68 rating, indicating that they are impervious to dust, dirt, sand, and water.

How to select the best waterproof smartphone

If water resistance is the most critical factor in your smartphone purchasing decision, you should pay close attention to manufacturers’ IP-rating claims.

In the mobile industry, an IP67 certification indicates that your device is protected against 1 meter (3.3 feet) of water immersion for 30 minutes. Some companies, such as Apple, use IP68 to refer to durability of up to 13 feet (4 meters). If a smartphone lacks an IP rating or has been treated with a water-repellent coating, you should not rely on it to survive submersion. Sadly, most low-priced smartphones, and even a few high-end models, rely on this limited form of protection (including the shady OnePlus 10 Pro situation where only the T-Mobile version has an IP certification).

Also, it is essential to note that an IP rating does not guarantee that your device’s warranty will cover water damage within the specified parameters. Unfortunately, although many phone manufacturers are too quick to assert water resistance, not even one is confident enough in that claim to replace or repair a product free of charge in the event of a liquid spill.

How we test smartphones

For a smartphone to make one of our lists of the best phones, it must excel in a series of tests we administer to every device. We conduct some of these tests in our laboratories and others in the field.

When measuring CPU and graphics performance, we rely on synthetic benchmarks such as Geekbench 5 and 3DMark. These tests allow us to compare iPhone and Android device performance. In addition, we conduct a real-world video transcoding test on each device using the Adobe Premiere Rush application and time the outcome. (Unfortunately, not all mobile devices are compatible with this test, so we skip it when necessary.)

The Best Waterproof Phones You Can Buy 2022

In addition to water resistance, the answer depends on what you seek in a phone. Here are some of the best water-resistant smartphones available at the time of writing (Nov 2022), listed in no order.

1. The best waterproof phone: iPhone 14 Pro Max

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”1″]

As one would expect from a device as plentiful as the iPhone 14 Pro Max, it promises to keep your device dry. Apple guarantees that all its new iPhones, including the iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14, and iPhone 14 Plus, can withstand 30 minutes of submersion in 6 meters (20 feet) of water with an IP68 water/dust resistance rating. That should be sufficient time to retrieve a dropped cell phone.

These impressive waterproof credentials are joined by the best phone cameras and performance of any phone we have tested, a fantastic new display with a Dynamic Island cutout and always-on display mode, and a battery life that is even better. Although the iPhone 14 Pro is identical to the Pro Max, the larger phone remains the best. Its more prominent display and longer battery life may be the only differences, but they are sufficient to make it the best iPhone experience.

  • Water resistance: IP68; max 20 feet (6 meters) for 30 minutes
  • Display: 6.7-inch OLED

  • Battery life drops dramatically if you push the screen brightness

2. The most affordable water-resistant phone: iPhone SE (2022)

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”2″]

The new third-generation iPhone SE incorporates the lightning-fast A15 Bionic processor found in 2019’s flagship iPhones into the iPhone 8’s chassis. And because it utilizes the iPhone 8’s design, it also possesses the iPhone 8’s water resistance. This phone is constructed to IP67 standards, meaning it can withstand immersion in 1 meter (3.3 feet) of water for 30 minutes.

But the device’s affordable price makes the iPhone SE’s water resistance genuinely remarkable. The iPhone SE is the least expensive IP-rated, water-resistant iPhone available at $429. (It also outperforms many inexpensive Android phones.) It also supports wireless charging and has an aluminum-and-glass design, making it far more premium than Android phones of comparable price.

  • Water resistance: IP67; max 3.3 feet (1 meter) for 30 minutes
  • Display: 4.7-inch LCD (1334×750)
  • Rear camera: 12MP wide (ƒ/1.8)
  • Front camera: 7MP (ƒ/2.2)
  • CPU: A15 Bionic
  • Solid glass build, IP67-rated, very compact body
  • Good brightness, decent contrast screen, great color accuracy
  • Loud stereo speakers, good audio quality
  • The screen on battery endurance is actually okay
  • The most powerful chipset; does not throttle much
  • Dependable photo and video cameras

  • No Night Mode.
  • The display is too small for a lot of tasks
  • 60Hz screen refresh, 60Hz touch sampling rate
  • No charger in the box
  • iOS (with its limitations) remains a love it or leave it affair

3. The best waterproof phone for most people: iPhone 14

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”3″]

Despite lacking a few features, the iPhone 14 is comparable to its Pro siblings regarding water resistance. In addition to being able to withstand 30 minutes submerged in 6 meters of water, it features a Ceramic Shield display that should prevent screen damage if the phone is dropped on dry land.

The iPhone 14 lacks the Pro model’s 120Hz display, telephoto camera, LiDAR sensor, Dynamic Island, and always-on display, among other features. However, the price remains low, and the device’s photography and computing performance continue to eradicate most Android competition, making it a worthwhile device for Android users needing a significant upgrade.

  • Water resistance: IP68; max 20 feet (6 meters) for 30 minutes
  • Display: 6.1-inch OLED
  • Cameras (back/front): 12MP main (f/1.5), 12MP ultrawide (f/2.4)
  • Front camera: 12MP (f/1.9)
  • CPU: A15 Bionic
  • Battery life (Hrs:Mins): 7:41
  • Upgraded front-facing camera with auto-focus.
  • Bigger size.
  • Shipped with iOS 16.
  • New Purple color option.
  • Bigger battery.
  • No 48MP resolution and 8K video recording.
  • A15 chip.
  • Smaller notch design.
  • No Always-on display.
  • No USB-C.

4. The best waterproof phone for Android fans: Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”4″]

As with other Galaxy flagships, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is IP68 water resistant so that you can drop it in water up to 1.5 meters deep without fear. However, this phablet’s actual value lies in its other features; it is the first phone outside the Galaxy Note series to include an S Pen. On the rear of the Galaxy, S22 Ultra are two telephoto lenses that help you capture more detail when zooming in on an image.

The 6.8-inch AMOLED display features a dynamic refresh rate that adjusts based on what you’re doing; for instance, scrolling through web pages may increase the refresh rate to 120Hz for a more fluid experience.

  • Water resistance: IP68; max 5 feet (1.5 meters) for 30 minutes
  • Display: 6.8-inch OLED (3200×1400)
  • Rear camera: 108MP main (ƒ/1.8), 12MP ultrawide (ƒ/2.2), 10MP telephoto with 3x zoom (ƒ/2.4), 10MP telephoto with 10x zoom (ƒ/4.9)
  • Front camera: 40MP (ƒ/2.2)
  • CPU: Snapdragon 8 Gen 1
  • Battery life: 9:50
  • Improved S Pen implementation
  • Impressive low-light photography
  • Much snappier processor
  • Hugely bright and punchy screen with adaptive refresh
  • Distinctive camera design is eye-catching
  • Very expensive
  • No increase in battery size
  • Less RAM than S21 Ultra
  • No microSD card expansion

5. Top water resistance for less: iPhone 13

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”5″]

The iPhone 13 has the same level of waterproofing as the iPhone 14 line – Apple-tested resistance to 30 minutes of submersion under 6 meters of water and an IP68 rating – but it is more affordable.

Even though newer chips have superseded it, the Apple A15 chipset remains more potent than any Android phone. Its dual cameras continue to produce excellent images, and once iOS 16 is installed, it will have access to all the iPhone 14’s software tricks. The price reduction to $599 may make that sacrifice worthwhile.

  • Water resistance: IP68; max 20 feet (6 meters) for 30 minutes
  • Display: 6.1-inch OLED (2532×1170)
  • Rear camera: 12MP wide (ƒ/1.6), 12MP ultrawide (ƒ/2.4)
  • Front camera: 12MP (ƒ/2.2)
  • CPU: A15 Bionic
  • Battery life: 8:25
  • Outstanding design - sturdy and water-proofed.
  • Bright OLED screen, HDR10, Dolby Vision.
  • Dependable battery life.
  • Loud stereo speakers, excellent output.
  • Unmatched performance, 5G.
  • Great all-round photo and video quality across all three cameras.
  • Minor upgrade over iPhone 12.
  • No 120Hz refresh rate.
  • The notch is still an eyesore even if smaller.
  • The fast charging isn't very fast and the charger is not bundled.
  • iOS (with its limitations) remains a love it or leave it affair.

6. Flagship water resistance at a great price: Google Pixel 7 Pro

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”6″]

This year, Google introduced a fantastic smartphone. Except for its terrible battery life, the Pixel 7 Pro excels in nearly every way. In addition, it has IP68 water resistance, like many other flagships on the market. This corresponds to a depth of one meter for thirty minutes.

As expected from a Pixel device, the Pixel 7 Pro has great cameras that perform admirably in most scenarios. This phone rivals the iPhone 14 Pro Max in terms of photography, which is saying a great deal. And thanks to the new Tensor G2 chipset, the Pixel 7 Pro has many software tricks up its sleeve.

The Pixel 7 Pro offers all these features for $899, making it the best flagship value available.

  • Water resistance: IP68, up to 3 feet (1 m) for 30 minutes
  • Display: 6.7-inch OLED
  • Rear cameras: 50MP (f/1.85) main, 12MP (f/2.2) ultrawide, 48MP (f/3.5) telephoto with 5x optical zoom
  • Front camera: 10.8MP (f/2.2)
  • CPU: Tensor G2
  • Battery life (Hrs:Mins): 6:31
  • Refined design and hardware across the board
  • Face unlock is back, and the in-display fingerprint scanner is much better
  • Iterative software improvements for last year’s cameras
  • Considering inflation, $600 is an even better deal than last year’s Pixel 6
  • Still no telephoto camera
  • Phone gets rather hot in heavy use and while charging
  • The fingerprint sensor and face unlock still aren’t as reliable as they should be
  • Battery life is okay, but not great

7. The best Android phone for the money: OnePlus 10 Pro

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”7″]

The OnePlus 10 Pro is the most recent and popular Android flagship device. It is one of our favorite new devices due to its gorgeous design, incredible display, excellent cameras, and long battery life. And with an IP68 rating, you can rest assured that the OnePlus 10 Pro will survive a dunking in water if you purchase the T-Mobile variant.

We believe this is the best Android phone for most people due to its highly affordable price of $899. The cameras are the best we’ve ever seen on a OnePlus smartphone, competing quite favorably with the Pixel 6 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

This year, OnePlus excelled in many areas, including software. OxygenOS 12.1 is the best Android skin we have seen from OnePlus. It is fluid and quick, especially when coupled with the 120Hz display.

  • Water resistance: IP68, 1.5 m for 30 minutes
  • Rear cameras: 48MP (f/1.8) main, 50MP (f/2.2) ultrawide, 8MP (f/2.4) 3.3x telephoto
  • Front camera: 32MP (f/2.2)
  • Display: 6.7-inch AMOLED (3216 x 1440)
  • CPU: Snapdragon 8 Gen 1

  • Fast fingerprint and face unlock
  • Sleek build
  • OxygenOS 12 is nice to use
  • Impressive fast charging
  • Battery easily lasts a day
  • Comes with a charger in the box
  • Offers the latest hardware
  • Mediocre telephoto camera
  • Too similar to the OnePlus 9 Pro
  • Only 3 years of updates
  • Telephoto camera is just 8MP
  • No 5G on AT&T
  • No IP certification

8. Stellar cameras for less: Google Pixel 7

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”8″]

Being on a tight budget does not preclude access to flagship smartphones. With a starting price of $599, the Google Pixel 7 enables unlocked phone enthusiasts to acquire an Android flagship device without breaking the bank.

The Pixel 7 does not have a telephoto lens, and the screen refreshes at 90Hz as opposed to the faster 120Hz rate of other smartphones. And you continue to receive great cameras that benefit from Google’s computational photography expertise. The Pixel 7’s new Tensor G2 chipset enables several Android phone-exclusive features, including call management and on-device dictation.

  • Water resistance: IP68, up to 3 feet (1 m) for 30 minutes
  • Display: 6.3-inch OLED
  • Rear cameras: 50MP (f/1.85) main, 12MP (f/2.2) ultrawide
  • Front camera: 10.8MP (f/2.2)
  • CPU: Tensor G2
  • Battery life (Hrs:Mins): 7:03
  • Compact and premium build, easy to handle, unique-looking design, dust- and water-resistant.
  • Sharp, bright, color-accurate display.
  • Good battery life considering the phone's size.
  • Android from the source, exclusive feature set, unrivaled perception of smoothness on this side of the OS divide.
  • Superb stereo speakers.
  • Overall, great camera quality with an unmatched character that has a loyal following.
  • The display is just 90Hz as opposed to competitors pushing beyond 120Hz.
  • Very slow charging by the standards of the day.
  • Certain software and hardware features are regionally limited - 5G, VoLTE, and much of the onboard AI stuff (though admittedly, so is the phone's availability, to begin with).
  • Ultrawide camera is underwhelming in low light.
  • Selfies rarely come out tack sharp.

9. The best non-Ultra option for Galaxy fans: Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”9″]

Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Plus offers many of the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s finest features at a lower price. Like other S22 options, the phone features an adaptive display and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 system-on-chip for a starting price of $999.

Notably, Samsung does not skimp on water resistance in this case. The S22 Plus, like the more expensive S22 Ultra, can survive a 5-foot drop into the water for up to 30 minutes.

The Galaxy S22 Plus is an excellent large-screen device, especially considering its 1,750-nit display and 45W quick charging.

  • Water resistance: IP68; max 5 feet (1.5 meters) for 30 minutes
  • Display: 6.6-inch AMOLED (2340 x 1080)
  • Rear camera: 50MP wide (f/1.8); 12MP ultrawide (f/2.2); 10MP telephoto (f/2.4) with 3x optical zoom

  • Battery life: 9:46
  • Bright and punchy display
  • Faster 45W charging
  • Cutting-edge CPU
  • Recycled look
  • A small upgrade over the Galaxy S21 Plus
  • Most camera improvements still can't match Google Pixel
  • Slightly smaller battery than S21 Plus
  • Tops out at 256GB storage

10. The best waterproof budget Android phone: Google Pixel 6a

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”10″]

The Pixel 5a introduced water resistance to the Pixel A-series, and the Pixel 6a continued the trend. This $449 camera has an IP67 rating, meaning it can withstand one meter of water for thirty minutes. In addition, it’s a perfect phone overall. Not only is the display good, but the performance is also excellent (especially for the price).

Photography experience is Pixel 6a’s claim to fame. Due to Google’s computational photography prowess, it is unquestionably the best camera phone for under $500. Pixel 6a should be at the top of your list if you’re on a tight budget and want the best camera for your money.

  • Water resistance: IP67; max 3 feet (1 meter) for 30 minutes
  • Display: 6.1-inch OLED (2400 x 1080)
  • Rear cameras: 12.2MP main (f/1.7), 12MP ultrawide (f/2.2)

  • IP67 water resistance
  • Years of guaranteed updates
  • Slick, feature-packed OS
  • Lovely small form-factor
  • No headphone jack
  • No wireless charging
  • Lacks microSD card slot
  • Fingerprint sensor is still kind of slow
  • Display is only 60Hz
  • Single 128GB storage capacity option

Best Waterproof Phones Buyer’s Guide

The essential aspects to consider

Water Resistance Rating

An IP rating is an accurate indicator of a phone’s water tightness. IP rating refers to the phone’s Ingress Protection rating, which indicates how well the phone can prevent liquids and solids from penetrating its internal components. The first number in the IPXX rating indicates resistance to solids, while the second indicates resistance to fluids. The greater the number, the greater the phone’s security. The maximum number of solids is six, while the maximum number of liquids is eight. To be considered a waterproof phone, your device should have at least an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. This rating indicates that the phone is impervious to dust and water damage even when completely submerged in up to 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes.

Additional Durability Features

Due to its resistance to water and dust ingress, your waterproof smartphone is inherently more durable than other devices. However, there are additional durability characteristics you should consider when shopping. First and foremost, among these is the touchscreen’s durability. Using specialized glass for the touch screen, most high-end smartphones are designed to withstand drops and bumps. Look for phrases such as Ceramic Shield or Corning Gorilla Glass to determine whether your display has additional protection. In addition to metal unibodies and polycarbonate plastic for the exterior casing, other durability features include polycarbonate or metal unibodies. Some more durable smartphones have rubberized plastic exterior casings for additional drop protection.

Display Quality

Consider the overall display quality of the waterproof smartphone you intend to purchase. In the past, obtaining a waterproof smartphone frequently meant sacrificing display quality due to material constraints. Fortunately, this is no longer the case. Modern waterproof smartphones feature displays with resolutions as high as 4K quality. We suggest searching for phones with at least full HD resolution for the optimal experience.

Performance and Processing Power

Most waterproof smartphones are regarded as flagship devices, representing the pinnacle of each manufacturer’s offerings. Consequently, you can also anticipate these phones to have the most advanced processing power. When you purchase a smartphone with robust internal components, you will not encounter sluggish user interfaces or frozen apps as frequently as you would with less expensive options.

Conformity to Pouches

Even though your smartphone has an IP68 rating, there are still some things you cannot do with it. It also includes using it as an underwater camera or transporting it unprotected, especially during extreme water sports like whitewater rafting.

Remember that an IP68 rating only protects against dust and water. It cannot prevent your smartphone from shattering if it collides with a rock or other hard object during the event.

We’ve got you covered if you ever need recommendations for protecting your waterproof smartphone. Find the necessary mobile accessories to safeguard your phone.

What are the best waterproof phones?

All iPhone 14 models from Apple offer the same high level of water resistance, but only one can claim the crown. Therefore, we have ranked the iPhone 14 Pro Max first, as it provides the best smartphone experience and an IP68 rating. If you don’t want to pay for Pro features, the iPhone 14 is a good alternative, as are the iPhone 12 and iPhone SE, if you want to save even more money.

The most recent models from Samsung and Google, including the Galaxy S22 Ultra and Pixel 7 Pro, adhere to this 5-foot standard, which technically qualifies them for IP68 certification. The official depth varies from device to device. IP67 includes everything up to 1 meter.

Unfortunately, most inexpensive models from Motorola, Nokia, and even OnePlus (to a certain extent) eschew actual water resistance in favor of water repellence achieved via nano-coating. This may save you if someone spills a beverage on your phone, but it won’t keep your phone if it sinks to the bottom of a pool. Such devices are not included on our list of the best waterproof smartphones. However, for affordable water-resistant smartphones, consider the iPhone SE (2022) and Google Pixel 6a, priced at $429 and $449, respectively.

The Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and Galaxy S22 Ultra all come with an IP68 dust/water resistance rating. That doesn’t mean the phones are ‘waterproof,’ but they are water-resistant and should be more than durable for the vast majority of users.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 FE was released earlier in 2022, and it’s one of the best waterproof phones if you don’t want to spend more money on a Galaxy S22 device. The design and build quality aren’t as good as in the premium Galaxy phones, but you’ll pay significantly less for the Galaxy S21 FE

From the Samsung Galaxy S7, all Samsung Galaxy S series devices have an IP68 certification. This means that all these smartphones can survive underwater at 1.5m depth for about 30 minutes. All models have this certification. So don’t panic if you drop your S7 Edge, S21 FE, or S22 Ultra in the sink.

Tagged as the best waterproof phone for Android fans. This smartphone features IP68 water resistance. This indicates that you can drop this phone in up to five feet of water without worrying about the water damaging your Galaxy S21 Ultra.

These models have a rating of IP68 under IEC standard 60529 (maximum depth of 6 meters up to 30 minutes): iPhone 13.

Even though they are of higher specs than the previous generation, they have the same water resistance. The iPhone 13, 13 Mini, 13 Pro, and 13 Pro Max are water-resistant to depths of 19.5 ft (6 m) for up to 30 minutes. Apple doesn’t consider any of these models to be waterproof.

So, they’re not completely waterproof, just water-resistant. You can go swimming with your new Galaxy S22 series phone or even take it underwater up to 1.5m deep, but we would advise against submerging it in saltwater or ionized water. So don’t take it to the beach for a swim.

Smartphones with an IP67 rating can withstand being submerged in just a tad bit more than 3 feet of water for up to 30 minutes

Technically, if you have a water-resistant phone, you can take pictures with it underwater. However, smartphone cameras aren’t optimized for underwater photography, therefore it can get quite tricky.

Water-resistant: able to resist the penetration of water to some degree but not entirely. Water-repellent: not easily penetrated by water, especially as a result of being treated for such a purpose with a surface coating. Waterproof: impervious to water.

There you have it, the ten best waterproof phones currently available. These smartphones are unquestionably the best companions for a trip to the beach or a wet and wild adventure. Which item on the list piqued your interest? Don’t forget to tell your friends about this article!
