The Best Printer For Mac

It’s much easier than it used to be to find the best printer for Mac. Nowadays, it’s nearly impossible to find a printer that won’t work with your Mac right out of the box. In the early days of the Macintosh, your best option would have been to buy one of Apple’s printers rather than try to find a third-party printer with the right connections and drivers.

Now that compatibility concerns are resolved, what makes the best printer for the Mac? In our opinion, support for Air Print comes first. If a printer has that feature, you can print wirelessly right away from your Mac and your iPhone and iPad. If you work in design, you want excellent print quality and color reproduction. You’ll also want a printer that can scan, copy, and handle different types of paper besides standard A4 paper.

When you invest in a piece of sleek Apple hardware, you don’t want the effect to be ruined by an ugly printer lurking on your desk so that Mac owners may have a stronger eye for attractive printers. Additionally, if you own a MacBook, you might want something portable and lightweight to carry on your travels.

We’ve compiled a list of the top printers for Mac that come in a variety of price ranges and have all the features you’re likely to need in mind. Each model has been assessed using specifications provided by the manufacturer and feedback from our network of contacts and regular customers. Can’t seem to find what you need? Check out our guides to the best printers for photos, the best printers for art, and the best printers for the home—many of which will work great with your Mac.

How to choose the best Mac printer

Nowadays, printers can print more than just text and images onto paper, so it only makes sense that we test each of the features and capabilities of the products included in this ranking of the best printers for Mac.

The printers on this list can still perform their primary function, just as smartphones should be able to make phone calls, despite that. Testing needs to be done for print rates, paper sizes, and paper capacity.

Following that, we looked at other features like scanning, copying, and even faxing, as well as touchscreen displays, size, weight, and aesthetics.

Connectivity is crucial in the business world, where the wire is increasingly unwelcome. For this reason, we also reviewed the Wi-Fi, AirPrint, and Ethernet options available on these printers. Finally, we’ve noted the prices of each printer, considering both the initial investment and the regular operating expenses (like ink) of each.

4. Best all-in-one printer for Mac: Epson Workforce Pro WF-4830 Wireless All-in-One Printer

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”4″]

In a recent WorkForce Pro refresh that included five machines, the WF-4830 was the middle model. While the WF-7820 and WF-7840 are wide-format printers (printing pages up to 13 by 19 inches) and otherwise comparable to the WF-4800s, the WF-3820 and WF-4820 are less expensive and less durable. For most offices with moderate printing requirements, the WF-4830 is the clear choice because it offers significantly more value than the WF-4820 and WF-3820, presuming you don’t need poster printing. In the sections below that discuss pertinent productivity and convenience features, I’ll go into more detail about how these machines differ.

The WF-4830 is 26.2 pounds and measures 13 by 16.7 by 19.8 inches (HWD). That makes it 3.3 pounds heavier and about two inches taller than the WF-4820. Its dimensions are like those of the HP OfficeJet Pro 9025. The smaller, lighter, but not nearly as capable Pixma TR8620 is the Canon printer that most closely resembles it.

The WF-4830’s sizeable 4.3-inch color touch-screen control panel, which is on either side of the screen, controls all of its features in addition to the Home and Help buttons. You can organize and carry out copy jobs, scan local drives or cloud sites, keep track of ink levels, set security restrictions, create usage reports, and many other things. The built-in web portal on the WF-4830 can also be accessed through any web browser, including the one on your smartphone or tablet.

The WorkForce Pro WF-4830 all-in-one printer is quick and has an auto-duplexing ADF and two deep paper drawers. It produces attractive text, graphics, and photos when printing, making it a fantastic option for small offices with average printing requirements.

Key Features
  • Epson printing system is designed to be used exclusively with Epson Genuine Cartridges.
  • High-speed printing — PrecisionCore Heat-Free Technology delivers high-speed, high-volume printing with 25 black/12 color ISO ppm and fast first-page-out.

7. Best large format printer for Mac: Epson Expression Photo HD XP-15000

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”7″]

The Editors’ Choice Canon Pixma iP8720 Wireless Inkjet Photo Printer is the only consumer-grade super tabloid (13-by-19-inch) inkjet photo printer I was aware of before the Epson Photo HD XP-15000 Wide-Format Printer ($349.99). Both models have a single feature (printing only). The XP-15000 has better paper-handling options, connectivity features, and a more up-to-date and user-friendly control panel and is priced similarly to the other six-ink machines. This is just enough to propel it into our top pick position for wide-format consumer-grade photo printers.

Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, USB Host, and connecting to one PC via USB are all connectivity options for the XP-15000. The Epson Connect portfolio of cloud connectivity features includes Wi-Fi Direct in addition to Epson E-mail Print, Epson Remote Print, the Epson iPrint App (iOS, Android) for connecting to various cloud sites, and the Creative Print App (iOS, Android) templates for making calendars, greeting cards, and other items, are additional mobile options. [content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”9″]

An A3 printer with a surprisingly low price is the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740, which is big and well-equipped. It is big enough to hold 500 sheets of A3 (tabloid) paper in its two deep trays and an additional 50 sheets of A4 in the automatic document feeder on top. It was made for a small, busy office or a tenacious home worker. It can print full-color A3 posters quickly and automatically flip them over to print the other side of the paper (auto-duplexing), while the ADF can scan and copy both sides of the page (duplex scan).

An Ethernet port for connectivity and built-in Wi-Fi supports AirPrint for Mac users. The print speeds are sharp, and it has a sizable touchscreen for simple operation. Just be sure you have enough room for it.

Key Features

10. Top high-speed and duplex printing option: HP PageWide Pro 477dw

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”10″]

With HP’s PageWide technology, inkjets are used, but instead of pausing and starting like a typical inkjet, your documents print continuously across the entire paper width.

They move through it more like a laser than anything else. The claimed print speed of 55 pages per minute is, therefore, accurate. It can print vibrant color images up to A4 size on coated photo paper because it is an inkjet. It can also do duplex scanning by automatically scanning both sides of the paper.

The generous 500-sheet paper capacity comes with upgrade options. Still, even without the additional paper trays, this quick and inventive four-in-one will work for most busy small-to-medium-sized businesses. On the downside, you’ll be able to tell when it’s working without a doubt, and the cost isn’t covered either.

Key Features
  • Category: Color inkjet all-in-one printer
  • Print speed: 55ppm (mono)
  • Paper sizes: up to A4
  • Paper capacity: 550 + 50 sheets
  • Weight: 22.3kg
PROS
  • Very fast printing
  • Duplex scanning capability
CONS
  • Noisy in operation
  • Expensive price compared to competition

How to select the ideal Mac printer for you

You should consider a few key features when choosing the best Mac printers to ensure they meet your printing needs. First, think about how frequently you will need to use the printer. You’ll need something much more durable than a printer serving a single user at their home office desk if it’s to satisfy many users in an office.

In the same vein, think about the space available to house your new printer and what other features you’ll be expecting from it. Decide which of these features, if any, you intend to use. Nowadays, most printers also have scanning, copying, and faxing capabilities. Finally, consider extra details like look and feel, which may be especially important for those who want to ensure their printer doesn’t stand out in an otherwise stylish home office.

AirPrint

Make sure the printer you select is compatible with AirPrint. You can print from your Mac using this method without installing any additional software or device drivers. Since these devices can be pricey and this feature adds value in many ways, it is best to check if Apple supports them before purchasing them when looking around for printers for Macs.

Connectivity

Which model will work best for you will depend critically on the connectivity options offered by your printer? Depending on your preferences, several different kinds can be helpful. Users can connect directly to the ports on their desktop using USB cables and print wirelessly using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections.

Inkjet vs. Laserjet

Because inkjet printers rely on ink cartridges that need to be changed more frequently than laser printers, they are typically less expensive than laser printers (some people find this more wasteful than others). Compared to less expensive inkjet printers, which are better for printing photos, laser printers can print high-quality images faster with sharp lines and text that stays crisp over time.

All-in-one Printer

All-in-one models’ printing, scanning, and faxing functions are combined into a single machine. Get a dedicated printer if you don’t require these extra features, don’t have space on your desk for another piece of equipment, or are just uninterested in them.

Print and Scan Resolution (dpi)

The next consideration is resolution (dpi). This is the number of dots per inch a printer can print. When printed, it determines how sharp the text will appear; higher resolutions produce sharper output but use more ink or toner per page.

Print Speed (PPM)

Pages per minute (ppm), a unit of measurement used to describe how quickly a page of text or graphics is printed from beginning to end, explains the printing speed of documents on your printer. While faster models can reach up to hundreds of pages per minute, remember that those speeds may lead to prints of lower quality. Any decent modern inkjet will print between 15 and 30 pages per minute.

If speed is not crucial, a slower printer might be less expensive in the long run if its quality meets your requirements.

Double-sided (Duplex Printing)

Most printers also support duplexing, which automatically prints on both sides of a page to save paper and money over time.

FAQs

Unlike Windows PCs, you can plug in almost any printer and the Mac will automatically install the printer without any disks. A Mac is still a computer, the only difference is the operating system. Can i use it in wireless mode ? or just plug-in ? Of course you can use a wireless printer.

There is no Apple printer, unfortunately. However, there are lots of printer manufacturers, including Canon, Lexmark, and Epson, who make wireless-enabled printers that work well with Apple products.

Apple’s retail stores would need additional repair space and staffing. And printers introduce a large class of technical support problems that Apple currently avoids. And after all that, unless Apple made the print engine, it wouldn’t make the ink, and that’s where all the money is.

On iOS and macOS, most HP printers work with Apple AirPrint to provide full-quality printing without the need to download or install drivers. For additional functionality, please download the HP Smart app from the App Store for iPhone and iPad or the Mac App Store.

To add your printer to the printer list, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Printers & Scanners . Click the Add button , then click the Default button . Select the printer (listed as an AirPrint Profile) in the Printers list, then click Add.

Your MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, with OS X Lion or Mountain Lion, can print to any AirPrint printer using Wi-Fi. Most printer manufacturers offer models that already include AirPrint — if you have a relatively new Wi-Fi printer from a major manufacturer, it probably has AirPrint already.

AirPrint is Apple’s branded technology for wireless printing between an Apple device, such as iPhone, iPad, or Mac, to an enabled printer. AirPrint makes it incredibly easy to print from your mobile phone, for example, without additional steps.

To change these preferences, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Printers & Scanners . See a selected device’s information, location, and status. Add a printer or scanner to the device list. Click the Add button , then choose from the list or type the device’s information into the dialog that appears.

With a document open on your Mac, choose File > Print, or press Command-P. The Print dialog opens, with a preview of your printed document. Click the arrows above the preview to scroll through the pages. Tip: To view a full-size preview in the Preview app, click the PDF pop-up menu, then choose Open PDF in Preview.
