What is the PPI of a smartphone’s display? 

Have you ever seen the phone-related acronym PPI and wondered what it stands for? PPI is used to measure the pixel density of all types of displays, including laptops, televisions, and smartphones. PPI is essential because the display’s pixels are responsible for the vibrant, colorful images you see on your screen. 

How is it then measured? Imagine a piece of paper with a square-inch box, with each grid portion containing a pixel. The greater the PPI, the denser the grid and, consequently, the greater the number of pixels. This is crucial because if a display has an insufficient pixel density, the image will appear fuzzy or pixelated. But the greater the number of pixels on display, the more detailed, crisp, and clear the pictures are, and we all want great photos, correct? 

What is the optimal PPI for mobile? 

It depends! Most of us consider the size of the phone’s display, but this is only part of the equation. The ratio between the screen size, its resolution (measured in width x height), and the number of pixels per inch are also crucial (PPI). In theory, as the display resolution of a phone increases, so should the PPI. Generally, a 6-inch full HD (1920 x 1280) smartphone will have approximately 390 PPI, while a 7-inch QHD+ (2960 x 1440) smartphone will have about 480 PPI. 

How We Chose 

The screen size was the first factor we considered when ranking the best smartphones with the best displays. There are no options with shoes smaller than six inches (or within a couple of tenths of an inch). We awarded bonus points to smartphones with larger displays that did not compromise display quality overall. We favored smartphones with 4K display resolution but included only full HD resolution options. 

Following this, we examined the overall design and durability. While we did not expect large-screen phones to fit well in one hand or be used with one hand, we awarded points based on how comfortably the phone could be held and used. Phones designed with ergonomics and a secure grip in mind received higher ratings. We also favored smartphones with durable glass and frames, as the likelihood of dropping larger phones is significantly greater. 

Finally, we evaluated the performance. The processing power required to operate smartphones with larger displays can be substantial. As a result, we ranked phones with the latest and most excellent processors higher because they run much more smoothly overall.

Most display experts and consumers agree that OLED displays are the world’s best smartphone displays. The best smartphone OLED displays are the Super AMOLED displays produced by Samsung Display, but other OLED producers (such as LG and BOE Display) are also producing high quality OLEDs.

The AMOLED display quality is much better than the OLEDs as it contains an additional layer of TFTs and follows backplane technologies. The AMOLED displays are much more flexible as compared to the OLED display. Hence, they are much more costly than the OLED display.

Well if battery consumption and color contrast or saturation is a concern then the Amoled display is going to win over LCD display anyway. While purchasing a smartphone, customers today mainly focus on two features- lesser battery consumption and a high-quality display.

The LCD displays are cheaper compared to the AMOLED as there is only one source of light which makes it easier to produce. Most budget smartphones also use LCD displays. LCD displays have bright whites, the backlight emits lots of light through pixels which makes it easy to read in outdoors.

It’s a constant debate. AMOLED Displays feature remarkable colors, deep blacks and eye searing contrast ratios. IPS LCD Displays feature more subdued (though some would say more accurate) colors, better off-axis viewing angles and often times a brighter overall picture.

Apple’s 10th anniversary iPhone X was the company’s first OLED Phone – with a 5.8″ 1125×2436 (458 PPI) flexible Super AMOLED display. Since then Apple has been adding more OLED iPhones, and as of 2021, the company’s entire smartphone lineup adopts AMOLED displays.

The biggest difference is that the Super AMOLED screen is brighter, with a power consumption that is 20 percent lower than amoled. Super AMOLED also lower sun reflection by approximately 80 percent compared to AMOLED.

To get to the resolution and size of a phone, an OLED display needs to be AMOLED. AMOLED is an acronym for “Active Matrix OLED,” and modern OLED displays found in consumer electronics use an active matrix as opposed to passive matrices found in older OLED displays.

Samsung Display’s AMOLED can block potentially harmful blue light by reducing the illumination of wavelengths between 415 to 455nm while increasing the illumination of safer wavelengths nearby.


Despite all the names and confusing concepts today, there are two types of display screens utilized for mobile screens. And virtually every other device screen. Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) and Liquid Crystal Displays (Liquid Crystal Display). 

In most of their high-end products, Samsung uses a more technologically advanced version of this display called AMOLED (Active-Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode). Due to its design, this display produces exceptionally vibrant colors and deep blacks. This display is ideal for playing video games and watching movies. However, it has been criticized for being too sharp and not producing the correct colors. (The whites can occasionally appear yellowish.) The display can also be power-hungry due to its design. 

Many other phone manufacturers, such as Apple and Huawei, use the LED display (they also employ the technologically advanced IPS version of this display) (In-Plane Switching). It does not have as vibrant colors or deep blacks as the OLED. However, the hues are more accurate. Depending on the screen’s resolution, this is a beautiful display for taking photographs. 

The user determines the optimal mobile display. It is simply a matter of selecting the appropriate display to fulfill their needs.
