Best Liquid Cooling Kits For Gaming PC

Water cooling configurations consist of a pair of tubing (typically made from reinforced rubber) connected to a liquid pump/reservoir and a high-profile radiator. The objective is to distribute the “loop” or tubing over the CPU, but users can extend the loop to cover adjacent components such as GPUs, RAMs, and motherboard VRMs. Coolant is continuously circulated through the tubing to cool the entire gaming PC for optimum performance without the risk of thermal throttling.

Let’s examine in detail how a CPU water cooling kit operates. Thermal paste will be used to bridge the gap between the water cooler’s baseplate and the CPU’s Integrated Heat Spreader (top layer).

The baseplate is a water block or pump head component, which will always contain coolant. The coolant will absorb heat from the baseplate and transfer it through one of the two attached tubes to a radiator.

The radiator’s fan exposes the tubing to air, which helps to cool the fluid and returns it to the water block as the final step in this never-ending cycle.

What Is Liquid Cooling?

All-in-one (AIO) liquid cooling systems are referred to when discussing liquid cooling for mainstream PCs. These are pre-assembled components manufactured by firms such as Corsair and EVGA. You do not need to fill a reservoir with a cooling solution or assemble multiple components as you would for a DIY liquid-cooling system. These systems typically (but not always) employ water for cooling, often called water-cooling systems.

You follow the instructions to install the cooling system, as with any other computer component. The tubing should always be inspected for leaks, however.

AIO liquid-cooling systems consist of three primary components that must be understood. First, the radiator is a large rectangular component with fans. This is where the liquid circulates, removing hot liquid from the CPU and running it through the system to cool it down before returning to extract additional heat.

The second essential component is the water block and pump. This component attaches to the top of the CPU. The baseplate of the water block sits between the remainder of the block and the CPU. This is where heat from the CPU is transferred to the cooling system. Typically, the water block contains the pump that circulates liquid throughout the system.

In addition to the radiator and water block, there is also the tubing through which the fluid travels between the two larger components. When installing tubing for the first time, inspecting it for potential leaks is essential, although these are unlikely.

Is Liquid Cooling Better Than Air Cooling?

In general, liquid cooling is more effective than air cooling. There are, however, exceptions to this rule. Some aftermarket air coolers can compete with lower-end liquid coolers, particularly single-fan radiator designs.

In general, however, liquid cooling tends to be better than a bulky fan and heatsink combo. Air cooling relies on a metal baseplate to absorb heat. The heat is then conducted through heat pipes to a large heatsink, where fans dissipate the heat and push hot air away from the CPU. On the other hand, liquid coolers also employ a baseplate, but the heat is absorbed by the liquid, which is more efficient than air at transferring heat. The hot liquid is then moved away from the CPU, where the radiator dissipates it.

Heavy-duty air coolers, such as those competing with lower-end liquid-cooling AIOs, are also significantly heavier and bulkier. An air cooler such as the Noctua NH-D15 can perform an excellent job of cooling, but it may not fit in cases with limited clearance. Some large air coolers may also obstruct RAM slots if not appropriately oriented.

How to choose the Liquid Cooling Kits For Gaming PC

Once you have mastered the fundamentals and comprehended the benefits of liquid cooling, the fun begins! Most first-time liquid cooling purchasers begin their journey with a kit. A kit is an excellent starting point because it contains all the components required to assemble the CPU loop. You do not need to worry about compatibility issues or wasting time with repeated checks for the correct quantity of parts.

However, kit offerings on the market are pretty diverse, and it can be challenging to determine which kit is the best option for beginners. This article will guide you through the EK kits and help you make a more informed decision when you decide to build your dream computer.

Slim Series kits

Slim kits are the most cost-effective kits in our inventory. However, lower prices do not equate to diminished performance! Slim kits were created with a focus on more minor cases. Numerous individuals desire to build a small, space-efficient PC today. And we were tasked with developing a comprehensive liquid cooling system for such applications. Therefore, all Slim kits include 25mm-thick EK-CoolStream SE radiators, the thinnest on the market. This makes them highly compatible with various cases that offer limited space for customization.

To make these kits as compact as possible, we include the smallest available pump reservoir combo. EK-XRES 100 SPC MX PWM is the most compact liquid cooling reservoir with an integrated SPC pump that can support two additional GPU water blocks with the S360 kit!

Slim kits include clear tubing so that colored coolants, which are sold separately, can be added. This will allow you to customize your custom loop further!

Liquid Series kits

Liquid Series kits have the most industrial appearance due to the inclusion of black ZMT tubing. Zero Maintenance Tube, or ZMT Tubing, has no evaporation rate. The walls of transparent tubes will allow some liquid to evaporate. This all occurs on a microscopic scale, and you cannot see or feel this process. The only visible indicator is a decreasing liquid level in the reservoir over time.

Consequently, periodic additions of coolant through transparent tubes are required. That is not the case with ZMT tubes! Therefore, these kits are ideal for workstation cooling, where frequent maintenance is undesirable! Workstations are typically concealed beneath a desk, so aesthetics are not the focus here.

Included in the L360 kit is the EK-CoolStream PE 360 radiator. With such a large cooling area, adding two GPU water blocks to the loop is simple, creating the ideal cooling solution for your workstation or rendering machine. With liquid cooling, you can always run your components at peak performance, and they will last much longer than if you use air cooling. Additionally, your system will be tranquil.

Performance Series kits

The kits in the Performance series are the ultimate liquid cooling kits for users seeking the best price-to-performance ratio on the market. These kits contain our most popular and best-selling components. If you want to begin your liquid journey with the best, market-proven components, this is the way to go. Most purchasers of these kits are gamers, and their orders typically include at least one additional GPU water block. Performance series kits are also intriguing because the EK-CoolStream CE 280 radiator, which is in the 140mm class, is exclusive to this series. P280 is the only kit that includes 140mm EK-Vardar fans. Keep this in mind if you seek this feature in your PC case.

Performance series kits are the only kits to include powerful Revo D5 pumps. EK-XRES 140 Revo D5, included with every P kit, is a reservoir pump combo with a fully rounded design that allows installation at any angle within a range of 360 degrees. A unique rubber shock absorber is used to decouple the pump’s main body from the mounting clip for vibration-free, noiseless operation.

Extreme Series kits

The Extreme Series kits are the pinnacle of performance liquid cooling kits, with all components of the highest quality. The main distinction between this kit and others is the separate pump and reservoir. This provides you with more possibilities and customization options when planning your loop. X kits offer the optimal combination of extreme performance and aesthetic appeal.

These kits include 60mm-thick EK-CoolStream XE radiators that provide the best possible cooling performance. Extreme series kits have the same EK-Supremacy EVO CPU water block as the Performance series kits, making them ideal for intense gamers and overclockers. You can add up to three additional GPU water blocks to the EK-KIT X360 loop!

This liquid cooling solution will last several generations of hardware with routine maintenance. It requires a one-time investment, and enthusiasts typically only replace the GPU water block when new graphics cards are released. You will not find a more refined assortment of parts than those included in the Extreme kits anywhere else.

Classic Line kits

For mainstream AMD and Intel desktop PCs, the Classic Line kits provide excellent cooling with low noise output at an affordable price. The EK-KIT Classic liquid cooling bundles are ready for expansion with a GPU water block. With its compatibility-guaranteed fittings and long tubing, the EK-KIT Classic is ideal for builders who are interested in custom liquid cooling for the first time.

With the promise of being ideal for builders entering the world of liquid cooling, EK Classic kits come with a full range of step-by-step video tutorials for setting up your custom loop. Click here for more information about EK Classic Kits.

Fans, blocks, and the pump-reservoir combination of these kits are all RGB-lit. The RGB lighting is compatible with the software of all leading motherboard manufacturers, including Asus AURA, MSI Mystic Lights, Gigabyte RGB Fusion, and Asrock Polychrome. The recently released EK Classic kits are offered in four different configurations.

Things to recall!

You receive everything necessary to assemble your CPU loop with each EK kit. We provide an abundance of tubing, allowing you to add GPU water blocks to the same loop. In addition, we include:

  • EK-ACF fittings.
  • EK-Ekoolant EVO Clear.
  • EK-Cable Y-Splitters for neat cable management.
  • An ATX bridging plug for leak testing the loop without having to power up the entire system.

Therefore, the primary distinction between EK kits is the size of the radiator and, consequently, the number of fans included. The size of the radiator also determines the name of each kit. Slim and Liquid kits include CPU water block Supremacy MX. Extreme and Performance kits include a Supremacy EVO CPU water block. Extreme kits have the pump and reservoir as separate components, whereas all other kits combine the pump and reservoir. In addition, there is tubing, a ZMT tube for liquid kits, and clear tubing for all other kits.

Finally, you should consider your budget and the primary purpose of liquid cooling in your situation. Is the CPU overclocked to improve game performance? Is it silence? What about alterations and overall aesthetics?

If you cannot find what you want in a kit, you can always use CLC – Custom Loop Configurator to hand-select every component!

8. Best 240mm Liquid CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X53

The NZXT Kraken X53 is the successor to our long-time favorite, the NZXT Kraken X52, and features significant aesthetic and cooling enhancements. This cooler was able to keep an Intel Core i7-9700K running at full speed and well below 50 degrees Celsius. It comes in 120mm, 240mm, and 360mm sizes.

It also features a unique “infinity mirror” lighting configuration, which creates seemingly endless RGB light rings.

The Kraken X53 excels in aesthetics in a market where it can be difficult to distinguish between two coolers without expensive equipment and precise measurements. In such a market, aesthetics often trump performance when deciding which cooler to purchase.

The performance of the £120–130 CORSAIR iCUE H100i RGB PRO XT is comparable, but the RGB lighting on the NZXT pump’s infinity ring design is much cooler.

The CAM software offered by NZXT is a mixed bag. On the one hand, it’s great for monitoring system temperatures and fan speeds, but the software’s inability to control the two Aer P120 fans is a missed opportunity. Adding various fan profiles would undoubtedly be advantageous.

Installation is as simple as any other AIO, and the mounting hardware feels sturdy. However, we would have preferred fan connections to the cooling loop. In addition, the cooler is backed by a 6-year warranty that few other manufacturers can match; this gives any potential purchaser peace of mind regarding the product’s overall quality.

Key features
  • Design: With a re-designed cap and larger infinity mirror ring LED, the new Kraken X allows for adjusting the orientation of the pump head to fit without affecting the direction of the logo
  • Bigger And Brighter: 10% bigger infinity mirror cap allows for more vivid RGB and a rotating cap accommodates re-orienting the logo no matter the direction the cooler is installed

  • Infinity mirror looks great
  • Decent cooling performance
  • Easy to install
  • No fan control from the software
  • Not quite as good as the CORSAIR alternative

9. Best 280mm Liquid CPU Cooler: EVGA CLC 280mm

This new 280 CLC from EVGA is one of the best values in the closed-loop cooling market. The pump is constructed with Asetek’s Gen5 technology, which is renowned for its reliability and efficiency. It employs a 280mm radiator with two whisper-quiet fans and has a water block with LED integration that is exquisitely designed.

The included EVGA Flow Control software allows you to control the fan, pump speed (RPM), and the block’s RGB lighting.

A different set of standoffs replaces the clip bracket on legacy AMD boards if the support plate behind the board has standard threads or nuts. LGA 115x users can attach the EVGA-supplied support bracket to the back of their motherboards using an additional set of standoffs on the front of the board.

The prominent RGB feature of the EVGA CLC 280 is the lighting behind the nameplate. Temperatures are monitored by the EVGA flow control software, which adjusts fans accordingly. Users may set their fan slopes, but the software’s ability to change the color of the EVGA logo may be the most significant advantage over motherboard-based fan control. The “K” icon forces operation at maximum speed.

  • Stealthy look
  • Great fans
  • 3rd Gen pump design
  • Decent cooling capabilities
  • RGB is great
  • Premium pricing
  • Average thermal performance

Liquid cooling is significantly more effective than fans. It is typically much quieter than traditional fans, making it an overall superior option.

Liquid coolers are designed to be watertight. However, if you frequently reinstall your liquid cooling kit, there is a slight possibility that it may leak if it has not been correctly reassembled.

Liquid cooling is a fantastic method for lowering CPU temperatures, resulting in better-sustained performance under load, even without overclocking.

On the other hand, liquid cooling is not strictly necessary, is more expensive, and has more moving parts that can break.

All-in-one liquid-cooling units are stylish and practical at lower temperatures, but those on a budget would do well to stick with a quality air cooler.
