Water cooling configurations consist of a pair of tubing (typically made from reinforced rubber) connected to a liquid pump/reservoir and a high-profile radiator. What Is Liquid Cooling? 

All-in-one (AIO) liquid cooling systems are referred to when discussing liquid cooling for mainstream PCs. These are pre-assembled components manufactured by firms such as Corsair and EVGA. You do not need to fill a reservoir with a cooling solution or assemble multiple components as you would for a DIY liquid-cooling system. These systems typically (but not always) employ water for cooling, often called water-cooling systems. 

You follow the instructions to install the cooling system, as with any other computer component. The tubing should always be inspected for leaks, however. 

AIO liquid-cooling systems consist of three primary components that must be understood. First, the radiator is a large rectangular component with fans. This is where the liquid circulates, removing hot liquid from the CPU and running it through the system to cool it down before returning to extract additional heat. 

The second essential component is the water block and pump. This component attaches to the top of the CPU. The baseplate of the water block sits between the remainder of the block and the CPU. This is where heat from the CPU is transferred to the cooling system. Typically, the water block contains the pump that circulates liquid throughout the system. 

In addition to the radiator and water block, there is also the tubing through which the fluid travels between the two larger components. When installing tubing for the first time, inspecting it for potential leaks is essential, although these are unlikely. 

Is Liquid Cooling Better Than Air Cooling? 

In general, liquid cooling is more effective than air cooling. There are, however, exceptions to this rule. Some aftermarket air coolers can compete with lower-end liquid coolers, particularly single-fan radiator designs. 

In general, however, liquid cooling tends to be better than a bulky fan and heatsink combo. Air cooling relies on a metal baseplate to absorb heat. The heat is then conducted through heat pipes to a large heatsink, where fans dissipate the heat and push hot air away from the CPU. On the other hand, liquid coolers also employ a baseplate, but the heat is absorbed by the liquid, which is more efficient than air at transferring heat. The hot liquid is then moved away from the CPU, where the radiator dissipates it. 

Heavy-duty air coolers, such as those competing with lower-end liquid-cooling AIOs, are also significantly heavier and bulkier. An air cooler such as the Noctua NH-D15 can perform an excellent job of cooling, but it may not fit in cases with limited clearance. Some large air coolers may also obstruct RAM slots if not appropriately oriented.
