Instant photo printers are the quieter, less-cool sibling of instant cameras; however, they are arguably more practical. They don’t quite capture the nostalgic excitement of pulling out an Instax camera at a party, but they’re a more versatile way to get to the final product: an actual, tangible photo print. In an age where the vast majority of our photographs are stored digitally on our devices or social media feeds, a physical image is almost magical.
There are numerous ways to convert photos on your phone into physical prints. Still, the vast majority involve either waiting for shipping or searching for a kiosk in a physical store, both terrible options. Mobile photo printers eliminate the need to wait, as they are compact enough to be carried in a handbag or purse.
Our Top Picks

How do instant photo printers work?
Instant photo printers, also known as portable photo printers, connect to your cell phone or tablet via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and, using a companion application, allow you to print any photo stored on your device. The Canon Selphy CP1300, our runner-up pick, can also connect to a computer via USB, which is unusual for this category. These printers are typically about the size of an external hard drive and use a different printing technology than a document or photo printer.
There are several types of instant-print technology:
- Popular instant cameras use the same film as Fujifilm’s Instax instant cameras.
- Additionally, there is Zink, an abbreviation for “zero ink” because it does not use ink to produce the image.
- Commonly referred to as dye-sub or 4-pass printing, dye-sublimation printing utilizes a ribbon to layer four ink colors on paper as it passes through the printer multiple times. Most dye-sublimation printers require at least one print’s worth of space behind them for the paper to pass through without difficulty.
Creating a great “instant” photograph requires more time than the name suggests. In our tests, Fujifilm’s Instax prints were the slowest due to the time needed for photo development. Zink prints were the quickest, taking an average of one minute from when we clicked the Send button until the image was complete. On average, dye-sublimation printing took about two minutes. Although Instax prints were the slowest in our speed test, taking an average of four to six minutes to develop, we believe they are worth the wait.
There is also the photographer’s aesthetics to consider. In our panel testing, people preferred the creamy appearance of an Instax print to those with greater color accuracy or detail. Professional photo editor Sarah Kobos stated, “Instant photos have a blurred, contrasty quality. They are not as sharp or as detailed as others. Not that they are not of high quality, but they possess a certain aesthetic. Do you want the photo to resemble the film, or do you want the best photo?”
How we evaluated and chose
Using the criteria from our guide to instant cameras as a starting point, we researched instant photo printers that met the following criteria:
- User-friendly: The printer should be enjoyable to use and not require a lot of instruction or a steep learning curve. We looked for printers that are simple to understand and operate so that you can go from installing the app to printing a photo in a short amount of time.
- Easily accessible, wallet-friendly film: A film that is readily available and inexpensive (less than $1 per exposure): You shouldn’t have to go on a filmed hunt when your supply runs out, so we prioritized printers with a film that is readily available and affordable (less than $1 per exposure).
- Decent warranty: Many white-label instant printers are available from companies with questionable track records, so we only considered printers backed by at least a one-year warranty from the manufacturer.
We printed the same five images on each printer for testing purposes. The photos included a linear resolution test chart to give us an idea of how well the printers handled detail, a color chart to show how colors were reproduced differently on each printer, and a group photo of people to determine how well each printer handled different skin tones.
Along the way, we kept track of how long it took for the images to print, starting the timer from when we clicked the Send button in the app until the paper emerged from the printer. (Spoiler: most printers took roughly the same amount of time.)
Since Fujifilm’s Instax film must be developed, we timed how long it took for each exposure to be completed. We also noted any bugs or issues we encountered, such as apps closing unexpectedly or requiring a lengthy period to connect to the printer. Finally, we presented two sets of photos to a test panel of six Wirecutter staff members, with the edges obscured so that only the image area was visible. We asked them to choose the best-looking images.
The Best Instant Photo Printer You Can Buy Today
Instant printers that produce 2 x 3-inch photos, roughly the size of a credit card, were evaluated. There are compact printers compatible with larger 4 x 6-inch photo paper better suited for hanging on the wall and other small-size formats, such as Fujifilm’s wide Instax. However, for this guide, only 2 x 3 options were considered. Our recommendations include free iOS and Android apps that you must download to use, and they all function flawlessly on both platforms.
1. Best Overall: Polaroid Hi-Print Pocket Photo Printer
[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”1″]
The Polaroid Hi-Print is distinctive because it is a miniature dye-sub printer, the technology used by most larger color photo printers. It applies yellow, red, and cyan layers in three different passes. During this time, the printer’s companion app indicates what is occurring, and you can observe the print moving in and out of the printer as various color layers are applied. It is not as entertaining as watching an instant photo print develop before your eyes, but it is excellent. It also produces high-quality images with accurate, vibrant color and strong contrast. There is banding in areas of solid color, but it is only visible from about a foot away, much closer than you are likely to view it.
The Hi-Print app is also very intuitive and straightforward to use. There is no way to sync your Google Photos or social accounts for direct access; if this is important to you, consider the Zink printer options listed below. There are a few “sticker” options to apply to your image preprint, but the text typefaces are the most attractive among the printers I evaluated. They inspired me to add humorous text to my photos. In addition to standard color and exposure adjustments, colorful frames are surprisingly helpful, like the text options.
One cannot simply add additional photo paper to the Hi-Print. Each refill is an entirely new printer cartridge, complete with a spool. Each includes ten sheets of ready-to-print photo paper, sold in packs of two, for 20 prints per package. The photo sheets have a detachable tab at the bottom, allowing you to remove the photo from the printer without touching the image. Your photo can also be printed with peel-off backing to create a sticker.
Sadly, the Hi-Print system generates a great deal of plastic waste. The old cartridge must be removed and discarded when installing a new cartridge. (Polaroid’s support page states that the company cannot recycle them, and my community’s curbside recycling guidelines prohibit it because it contains multiple types of plastic.) Unfortunately, you cannot reuse it in some capacity. Additionally, the cartridges are significantly larger than a pack of Zink or Instax paper, making it impractical if you need to carry a large number of paper refills.
- FIND IT, PRINT IT, STICK IT: It’s just that simple with Polaroid Hi-Print. Customize and print images from your mobile device with high quality 2×3 buisness card size prints you can stick anywhere.
- DYE-SUB TECHNOLOGY: The Polaroid Hi-Print utilizes innovative dye-sub cartridge technology resulting in high quality vibrant photos in under 50 seconds.
- WIRELESS PRINTING: Easily connect with the Polaroid Hi-Print mobile app (iOS and Android) via Bluetooth to create vibrant custom prints.
- MAKE IT PERSONAL: Connect to the Polaroid Hi-Print mobile app to edit and customize your photo content with frames, filters, text and emoticons for a unique personal touch.
- PRINT AT HOME OR ON THE GO: The Polaroid Hi-Print is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and is small enough to take along and print from anywhere.
- PHOTO PAPER NOT INCLUDED: Polaroid Hi-Print photo paper cartridges purchased separately.
- NOTICE: The Polaroid Hi-Print Pocket Printer is only compatible with Polaroid Hi-Print Paper. Polaroid Zink Paper is not compatible with the Hi-Print Series.
- Above-average print quality
- Easy-to-use, robust mobile device app
- Well-built and attractive
- Can't print from a PC
- Running costs are high, especially for small 2-by-3-inch format
2. The best Instax photo printer: Instax Mini Link 2
[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”2″]
Instax film possesses a certain allure. First, it’s a film, so you’ll be able to watch it develop in front of your eyes after the photo has been printed. The images have a nostalgic appearance, with inky blacks and slight overexposure. The classic white frame that holds the film in place is also present on prints. You may be familiar with the Polaroid brand, but if you want the instant film in a convenient package, you should become acquainted with the Instax brand.
In conclusion, the Mini Link 2 is a unique product with numerous quirks that irritated me during testing, but ultimately, it’s Instax. This has its unique appeal, and for a good reason. Instax film is readily available at brick-and-mortar and online retailers, albeit at a premium price. The prints are of excellent quality, and the film is not prohibitively expensive. Depending on how you purchase refills, expect to pay approximately $0.70 per print. The MSRP for a 20-sheet refill pack is roughly $20, but the current selling price is $14. Not as expensive as Hi-Print paper, but more costly than Zink paper.
- Compact and lightweight. Connects wirelessly via Bluetooth to your Smartphone
- For use with INSTAX MINI instant film only (sold separately) – Prints 2” x 3” photos
- Add frames, filters, sketches and stickers prior to printing. Print photos from videos
- Using the INSTAXAiR feature, add doodles or shapes to your photos. Record your drawing and print a QR code on your image
- Includes MINI LINK 2 Printer, USB Cable & 1-year Limited Product Warranty
- Prints instant photos
- Bluetooth connectivity
- Instax Rich mode prints
- Supports Android and iOS devices
- Blue, pink, and white finishes available
- Stale micro USB charging port
- Gimmicky gesture controls
- Can't print from PC or Mac
3. The best Zink photo printer: Canon IVY Mini Photo Printer
[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”3″]
Canon Ivy is the best mobile printer for parties and social events. It accepts commonly used Zink paper and offers the best photo quality and color reproduction of the Zink printers we tested. Its companion app appears to receive timely updates with attractive, seasonally appropriate new photo “stickers” When I used the app in late July, it was recently updated with artwork by illustrator Sabrena Khadija depicting Pride and Juneteenth.
In addition to being slimmer and more portable than the Instax and Hi-Print, the printer is also more cost-effective. At the time of writing, the printer retails for $99.99, and 50 sheets of paper cost $24 on Amazon, equating to approximately 50 cents per print.
While testing, I encountered one issue: on an iPhone 11 running iOS 15.6, the app crashed whenever I click the option to link my Google Photos account. This worked adequately on Android, so the issue appears to be iOS-specific. I would not recommend the Ivy if you rely on Google Photos for image storage and own an iPhone. I had no problems accessing photos stored on my iPhone or connecting to my Instagram account, which is likely how most iPhone owners would use the printer.
Otherwise, the Ivy is an excellent option for those who prioritize portability and affordability over maximum print quality.
- Print from Bluetooth and social media
- Print 2 inches x 3 inches photos with peel and stick backing
- Super portable. Print resolution 314 x 400 dots per inch
- Disclaimer: Requires mobile device to be connected to the Canon ivy mini photo printer via Bluetooth and the Canon mini print app, available for free on the app store and at Google Play; Compatible with mobile devices running iOS 9.0 or later, and Android devices running Android 4.4 or later
- Recommended operating temperature: 59 – 89.6°F (15 – 32°C). Environment humidity: 40 – 50% relative humidity
- Good print quality for its class.
- Easy to set up and use.
- Tiling feature allows for bigger images and collages.
- Competitive running costs.
- Can't print from a PC.
- Bluetooth is only connection option.
- Lacks support for Wi-Fi.
- No savings for buying paper in bulk
4. Best cheap instant printer: HP Sprocket Portable 2x3" Instant Photo Printer
[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”4″]
For this category, we considered the Sprocket and the Kodak Step, two C&A Marketing-licensed Zink printers. The $80 HP Sprocket is marginally more advantageous. The printer adds some unattractive sharpening and brightening that resembles a poor HDR effect to the print quality. The Canon Ivy is a better option if the photo quality is a priority. However, this is unlikely to bother the majority of users. But overall, color reproduction is acceptable on the Sprocket, whereas the Kodak Step adds excessive amounts of red to images. You can correct this by adjusting the cyan/red slider within the application, but you must do so before every print.
The Sprocket also has some appealing qualities. The app’s onboarding and initial setup instructions are clear and helpful. Additionally, you can rename the printer as it appears in the app and select the color of the printer’s indicator light. It is not relatively as thin as the Canon Ivy, but it is small enough to fit in an oversized clutch bag. When writing, a pack of 100 photo sheets costs $45 on Amazon, making the cost per print less than fifty cents. The Sprocket is a good deal if you are not overly concerned with image quality.

- Sprocket App has lots of new functionality.

5. Best portable printer for square photos: Canon SELPHY Square QX10 Portable Photo Printer
[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”5″]
The SELPHY Square QX10 lives up to its name by directly producing square photo prints measuring 2.7 x 2.7 inches (68 x 68 millimeters) from your mobile phone. The paper size is 72x85mm, leaving a border around the edge and a strip along the bottom, which is helpful if you want to write a caption. The peel-able backing reveals a self-adhesive surface, allowing you to literally stick your prints wherever you want. Utilizing dye-sublimation technology and an internal rechargeable battery, it is a compact and utterly portable printer that produces high-quality images, is incredibly simple to operate, and has reasonable running costs, amounting to approximately 80p/75c per print.
The Canon SELPHY Square QX10 aims to prove that being square is still fashionable. However, it faces increasing competition from other portable printers, so its work is cut out.
As its name suggests, the Canon SELPHY Square QX10 adheres to a square picture format, which places it in a similar category as the Polaroid Lab instant printer, albeit one that uses instant film. And while other manufacturers, such as Instax Mini Link 2 and Instax Link Wide, have been focusing on different formats for their instant film printers, Canon’s latest SELPHY offers square prints on dye-sub paper.
It is offered in black, white, green, and pink colorways, making it a chic appearance. In addition to a single button for operation and two LEDs for charging and status indicators, the design is extremely sleek. It may be a little on the large side to qualify as a “pocket printer,” but it has no protruding parts, a dye cassette that slots into the side, and an internal paper tray that can accommodate up to 20 sheets of photo paper.
If you prefer square photographs, the QX10 is an ideal travel companion. There are many advantages to printing images from your smartphone or another smart device over Wi-Fi Direct from anywhere and everywhere. Despite this, connectivity options are somewhat limited. For instance, Bluetooth and USB printing from a computer are not supported. The QX10 is a bit of a one-trick pony, but it performs its one trick exceptionally well.
- Rich, Vibrant, Archival Quality Images – Preserve your memories as quality prints full of color and detail for scrapbooks, pinboards, or anywhere you want to treasure a moment.
- Ready Whenever and Wherever You Are – Use the SELPHY SQUARE QX10 anywhere, thanks to Wi-Fi connectivity, and be ready to create really beautiful prints of your special memories at a moments notice.
- Create 2.7in x 2.7in Prints From A Brand-New Paper – The SELPHY SQUARE QX10 prints bigger and better 68mm x 68mm (2.7in x 2.7in) images onto high quality paper with a captionable border for a special look you’ll treasure.
- Using Dye-Sublimation Technology – Beautiful and permanent colors are embedded in the substrate, rather than printed on the surface, resulting in quality prints with smooth, rich colors and details that last for up to 100 years. In addition, the prints are dry and ready to handle as soon as they exit the printer.
- Good image quality
- Very easy to use with Canon’s companion app
- Fairly speedy
- Quite pricey to buy
- No option for connecting to a computer
- A little bulky for a ‘pocket printer’
6. HONORABLE MENTION: KODAK Step Wireless Mobile Photo Mini Printer
[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”6″]
This printer is compatible with nearly every smartphone on the market. You’ll be able to print photos directly from an iOS or Android tablet or smartphone. It connects wirelessly via Bluetooth, so there are no wires to get tangled up in or find storage. Unfortunately, this printer produces images with a “warm” color bias. This can distort image color profiles.
It prints highly durable photographs so that you can preserve your memories for as long as possible. They are resistant to moisture, tears, rips, and smudges. In addition, the brand provides access to a free application. This permits the addition of filters, the creation of collages, the use of borders, the application of stickers, and even the addition of text. It is a comprehensive editing suite, so you can always ensure that your photos print precisely as you desire.
- STEP UP YOUR PRINTING GAME
- AMAZING ZERO-INK TECHNOLOGY

7. BEST FOR LARGER PICTURES: Lifeprint 3x4.5 Portable Photo Printer
[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”7″]
This printer offers larger photo sizes than the vast majority of its competitors. Instead of the standard 2″ x 3″, the photos will be printed at an enormous 3.4″ x 5″. This is ideal for those who require slightly larger photographs for their needs. Additionally, you will see more detail. However, some individuals believe that the application does not function as intended. While this is not a deal-breaker for most people, it is something to keep in mind if you’re interested in this feature.
Additionally, augmented reality is integrated into the photos. This is a very cool feature that is uncommon among portable printer competitors. They are “Augmented Reality Hyperphotos” and allow you to embed videos within your photos. Using a specialized app developed by the company, it can also communicate with your friends and family. Using your printer, you can instantly share your photos with anyone worldwide.
- SUPER SIMPLE TO USE

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”8″]
This wireless photo printer is a fantastic way to personalize your bedroom, office, bathroom, or any other space requiring embellishment. This printer is highly portable and compact, making it ideal for printing on the go. Unfortunately, the photos printed with this model tend to be quite dark. It provides 802.11b/g connectivity. You can print from nearly anywhere if you are connected to your printer. It produces long-lasting and durable photos so that they can withstand the test of time. 10. Best Hybrid Camera :Fujifilm Instax Mini EVO Instant Camera
[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”10″]
Fujifilm’s Instax Mini Evo is primarily a hybrid digital and instant camera, but it also functions as a standard portable printer, making it a true all-arounder.
As with other Instax printers, the Instax Mini Evo app allows you to edit photos with filters, stickers, and frames. You can also transfer camera-captured images to the application for digital storage.
The camera combines analog buttons with digital effects to create an enjoyable shooting experience. It appears sophisticated and vintage, unlike some of the brand’s other products, which seem childish. The Evo features a longer battery life and a compact design.
Although all of these features are enticing, the Instax Mini Evo comes with a hefty price tag, in addition to the cost of Instax film.
- 10 Lens x 10 Film Effect Options = 100 Ways of Expression

Factors to consider when choosing the best Instant Photo Printer
Surely you have heard the expression that fashion is cyclical and that everything eventually returns. Due to the growing popularity of mini portable photo printers, paper photographs are coming back in this instance.
These pocket-sized kits enable acceptable quality copies to be made quickly and easily. In this buying guide, I will discuss the six most important considerations when searching for mini photo printers.
Before deciding on a portable printer, check its weight and dimensions, the size of the prints, the resolution offered, the working capacity of the battery, the accessories and included spare parts, and the price at which it is sold.
Size of the prints
The dimensions of mini portable printers are typically smaller than those of conventional photographs. Most models feature sizes comparable to business or credit cards, ranging from 5 x 7.6 cm to 5.4 x 8.4 cm.
These dimensions are ideal for storing photographs in a wallet, on a refrigerator, in invitations, albums, or personal diaries. Nevertheless, some compact models accept 10×15-inch Polaroid paper, the standard photo size.
Choose the dimensions based on the intended purpose. On the other hand, keep in mind that there is monochromatic equipment. These models are less expensive and a good option if you will only be printing black-and-white drawings, texts, receipts, messages, lists, QR codes, or posters.
Quality and resolution of the print
This factor is computed in dots per inch (dots per inch). The greater the quantity, the higher the quality. Bluetooth mini photo printers have a lower resolution than traditional equipment or photo labs due to their recreational and non-professional nature. Therefore, if they provide 300 x 300 dpi, it will be sufficient to produce good prints.
In addition, these devices come with a free application with editing capabilities. Look for a model that allows you to add tints, effects, and filters; modify lighting, remove red eye, and add texts and frames for the best results.
Dimensions and weight of the equipment
The primary advantage of these mini mobile printers is their small size, which enables them to be carried anywhere in a backpack or even in a pocket of pants or jacket.
Choose a device that weighs less than 300 grams and measures no more than 13 x 8 x 3 cm for greater portability.
These printers are battery-powered and self-contained, requiring neither cables nor electrical power. For optimal results, ensure that the selected model can take at least 20 photos per cycle and that its charging time does not exceed two hours.
Accessories and included spare parts
These devices typically include accessories that facilitate their use, such as carrying cases, photo albums, stickers, clips, and a device with a print sheet.
Choose the model that provides the most value for your budget. Here you can view the features of the Pyle portable instant photo printer…
Alternatively, before deciding, ensure that refills of the papers or sheets are available online, are simple to acquire, and are priced affordably.
Price of mini photo printers
Depending on the previously analyzed factors, the price of a low-cost portable mobile printer ranges from 50 to 80 USD. In contrast, models of superior quality cost more than USD 150.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you still have questions regarding these instant photo printers? Do not miss the following compilation, so you have no more questions.
Simple maintenance is required for this equipment. They only need to clean the head with a cotton swab or cotton ball moistened with medical alcohol and charge the battery at least once every three months to prevent faster battery degeneration.
On the other hand, it is essential to shield them from dust, moisture, heat, and shock. For this, storing and transporting them inside a padded protective case is an excellent option.
They are generally affordable and the cost per unit decreases as larger quantities are purchased. On average, a kit with 50 sheets is obtained for 35 to 40 USD and one with 20 varies between 15 and 18 USD.
Both the connection via WiFI and via Bluetooth is equally effective. However the first one is a bit faster and has a longer range.
The most used of these devices is the ZINK technology (“Zero ink”), which uses a type of special thermal paper that is activated during the printing process.
This has several layers and crystals of amorphous pigments, which generate the different colors by means of heat impulses, by controlling their duration and intensity.
The useful life of these devices depends largely on the type of use and the care taken. On average they last between 3 to 6 years.
The conclusion for buyers of instant photo printers is that numerous types of printers are currently available, each with its own features and capabilities. Whether you seek a high-quality inkjet printer or a budget-friendly laser printer, you will be able to find one that meets your requirements.
Consider whether you need a large device or if a smaller option would serve you better when selecting the best one. Additionally, you should assess the volume of printing required and the type of paper that will be utilized.
In addition, take note of any additional features that may be important to you, such as wireless connectivity, fast printing speeds, and high-resolution printing. With these considerations in mind, selecting the ideal printer for your home or office is straightforward.
