The number of cores and threads directly correlates with the number of programs that can be run concurrently and the computer’s power.

Therefore, more cores/threads = better, correct? True and no. There are typically no performance gains for gaming beyond the quad-core or quad-thread threshold. Extra threads are helpful for multitasking and other tasks, such as video rendering and streaming.

Moreover, a few games are optimized to use more than four cores; while these are cutting-edge and rarely make a significant difference, they do exist.

However, if you’re looking for more threads, you shouldn’t be running a gaming-only system. To make the investment worthwhile, you must stream or render semi-regularly.

Clock Speed

Intel processors are capable of higher clock speeds than AMD processors, even before overclocking, contributing to Intel’s advantage in single-core performance. Modern Intel CPUs support turbo frequencies as high as 5 GHz out of the box, whereas AMD appears incapable of exceeding 4 GHz.

Overclocking can increase these figures even further, but the trend does not alter.
