The PTR jury is still out on whether or not they love it, but there’s no doubt that it makes stopping at the standard 45-degree angle easier than other saws that extend beyond that point.  In a further peculiar move, you gain additional LED light control. You can alternate between permanently on, trigger-activated on, and completely off. The constant mode helps align the blade on the cutline before turning the motor.  The Metabo HPT MultiVolt Circular Saw is a blade-right design that resembles a conventional sidewinder. The main handle features a push-in trigger safety and an over mold for a secure, comfortable grip. Our only issue is that the secondary handle is too small and positioned too close to the primary alias for our taste.  The first MultiVolt circular saw from Metabo HPT is well-built, comparatively lightweight, and outperforms our corded worm drive. It utilizes Skilsaw’s 48V TrueHVL as its power source and represents the company’s most recent foray into the cordless market.  Cutting depth is the apparent advantage of this model over Skilsaw’s 7-1/4-inch cordless worm drive. Like the 10-1/4-inch corded Sawsquatch, you can cut four times as much material in a single pass.  The most significant change is, of course, the addition of a battery-powered option. We use the original Sawsquatch extensively for agricultural projects, such as topping fence posts and building barns, and the ability to use battery power is a huge advantage.  Compared to the 7-1/4-inch model, the new worm drive features a slightly modified gearing package. In deeper cuts, the brushless motor must maintain its RPMs, requiring more torque.  At World of Concrete, we had the opportunity to use the saw and got a feel for what to expect. The task of sawing through untreated 4 x 4 lumber is relatively simple, and the saw does not feel cumbersome.  It is possible to stall the saw with downward pressure, but no more so than with a corded worm drive. It is capable of ripping at a rate that is twice as fast as I want to rip.  The Diablo blade is excellent, but we prefer the Skilsaw edge in this instance. Its thicker design reduces deflection and wobble when making more brutal cuts. With the current cost of lumber, we are motivated to make accurate cuts the first time.  Is it corded or cordless? It was helpful for various tasks across FBCH’s multiple campuses; here’s how I used it.  It’s not surprising that the Milwaukee M18 Fuel 8-inch Metal-Cutting Circular Saw has a circular saw-like feel because it has a circular saw-like form factor. This tool is slightly larger and heavier than usual, weighing just over 12 pounds, but it requires this weight to perform its function. If you’ve been eating Wheaties, you can do it with one hand, but you should plan on using two.  The tool body of the blade cover, which houses the superior chip collection system, is designed with a raised line that precisely corresponds with the blade. This line facilitates following your cut line. This helpful feature is not highlighted in Milwaukee, which appears intentional. In addition, there is an efficient blade brake that stops the saw quickly and an overload light that indicates when to release the pressure.  On multiple FBCH campuses, the Milwaukee cordless metal cutting saw assisted me in removing a protruding galvanized pipe and cutting metal door thresholds to specifications, among other tasks. Again, the saw slices through the material as if it were not there.  The Milwaukee M18 Fuel 8-Inch Metal-Cutting Circular Saw is a formidable piece of equipment featuring an advanced battery, superior chip collection, and cool cuts. Although rear-handle saws are not new to the market, fantastic advancements over the years have made cordless models more powerful and efficient. The Skil PWRCore 20 XP Brushless Rear Handle Circular Saw has some of the same features as the original Skil worm drive saw, but is it up to the task for today’s professionals?  Two batteries in series allow the circular saw’s brushless motor to produce 40V power and 5300 RPMs while still utilizing the same batteries as the PWRCore 20 line.  The cut capacity of 2-9/16 inches for a 90-degree cut and 1 7/8 inches for a 45-degree angle is comparable to the highest we’ve seen. Although 3x material is uncommon in our region, it’s comforting to know that this saw can crosscut it in a single pass.  As we began to perform a series of standard test cuts (2 x 10 cross cuts, miter cuts, bevel cuts, and compound cuts), the saw cut confidently and tracked well through even the most demanding cuts. When switching to rip cuts in stacked plywood, it did not stall at all. It can exert sufficient force to slow the blade, but not at average cutting speeds.  When making long rip cuts, a worm drive/rear-handle saw must be stable and easily glide across the surface. The shoe of Skil is pleasantly low-friction, and the saw effectively balances stability and effortless glide.  The more we utilized the saw, the more its capabilities became apparent. Compared to our corded Skil worm drive, the 220 rear handle saw is more resistant to stalling and makes faster, deeper cuts. The cutting power is unquestionably professional compared to the other cordless saws with a rear handle that we’ve tested. A benefit of higher-priced saws is the overall smoothness of the cut.  The 220 circulars saw with a rear handle was designed by Skil to meet the needs of professional contractors. The performance and construction are deemed satisfactory by our testing team. The price of $250 for a kit is beautiful compared to other kits that cost $100 to $200 more. Consider giving the Skil PWRCore 20 XP rear handle circular saw a shot if you’re looking for a cost-effective way to cut the cord on your worm drive.

Whether you prefer a sidewinder or a rear-handle design, the FlexVolt line from DeWalt offers the best cordless performance. However, we recommend the FlexVolt Advantage circular saw to most people. With a 20V Max battery, you get excellent performance, but with a FlexVolt battery, it reaches an entirely new level. When using FlexVolt packs, you gain a significant advantage from the ability to use either battery.  The DeWalt FlexVolt Advantage circular saw follows the FlexVolt Advantage hammer drill’s awe-inspiring performance. We have high expectations for the DCS573 circular saw and want to know where it ranks in terms of overall performance among DeWalt’s cordless lineup. We’ll find out by running it on the PTR Test Track!  As a sidewinder circular saw, DeWalt adheres to the conventional blade-to-the-right design. We can start the blade-left versus blade-right debate in the comments section, but the bottom line is that right-handed users who stand to the left of the saw will experience less dust.  There is an available dust port as an option. We would prefer that it be included in the kit, but we recognize that not everyone uses them. However, connecting a vacuum does affect the amount of mess that must be cleaned up.  The DCS573 circular saw, like most circular saws from DeWalt, features an ergonomically superior handle. With its ambidextrous push-in trigger safety, the main handle fits comfortably in both hands.  The left-offset front handle fills our hands and provides a secure grip that we appreciate. The saw’s weight without a battery and with a blade is 8.4 pounds. A 5.0Ah battery increases the weight to 9.8 pounds, while a 6.0Ah FlexVolt battery increases the weight to 10.7 pounds.  The DeWalt FlexVolt Advantage circular saw is the model we wish DeWalt would have introduced with the original FlexVolt line; it is compatible with both 20V Max and FlexVolt batteries and provides a significant performance boost when the FlexVolt battery is utilized. Which model should you choose: 20V Max, Power Detect, FlexVolt Advantage, or FlexVolt?

It is difficult to beat the XSH07 for your specific professional cutting needs. As an 18V X2 model, it utilizes the power of 36V without departing from Makita’s massive LXT platform. It was built on the same foundation as the XSH06; this saw is AWS-compatible, allowing for automatic vac activation even when using a cordless saw.  With all the excitement surrounding Makita’s 18V X2 Rear-Handle Saw, you may have missed that they have not produced an X2 sidewinder since their original XSH01 model several years ago. The most recent model of the Makita 18V X2 LXT Circular Saw is the XSH06, and its performance is even better than that of the XSH01.  Makita includes a dust port attachment with a single screw with the saw. The obvious benefit is that you can connect your vacuum for cutting fiber cement board or general cutting when attempting to maintain a clean workspace.  With batteries and blade included, the Makita XSH06 weighs a manageable 10.9 pounds thanks to magnesium, which also increases its durability. The blade’s base, guard, and cover are all magnesium.  Their charging system is one of Makita’s underrated features. Using active airflow, their batteries charge and cool faster than conventional chargers. The kit options for this saw include a dual port Rapid Optimum Charger, allowing you to charge two 5.0 Ah batteries in just 45 minutes fully.  Makita has equipped its saws with excellent stock blades for a long time. With the Makita XSH06, you receive one of their new Max Efficiency blades – one of the sharpest and most efficient blades for a cordless circular saw.  Makita has done almost everything correctly with the XSH06 model. I am not dissatisfied with the product’s design, performance, or pricing structure. The bevel and depth of cut adjustments are tool-free, and the 20-volt electrical system is compatible with batteries from the brand’s entire 20-volt max system.  However, the battery and charger required for operation are not included, and there is no light or laser guidance for precise cutting.

The Kobalt KCS is distinguished from other cordless circular saws’ four amp-hour power cell’s exceptional battery life. It also excels in the cutting department. The machine can perform long rips and total depth cross cuts on par with its competitors. The saw has a simple design as well. Notably, angle and depth adjustments are effortless to use. The only issues we have with this saw are that it lacks positive stops, a 22.5 mark on the bevel, and precise sightlines. However, these flaws are minor in comparison to the battery life of the saw.  In our evaluation of circular saws, the criterion for usability encompasses all aspects besides cutting power and battery life. Unfortunately, the Chevrolet Kobalt performs poorly in this category. The saw is not particularly difficult to use; quite the opposite. A few features that promote seamless interactions with the saw are missing.  When evaluating the ease of use of a saw, we focus primarily on the shoe, as the angle and cutting depth adjustments are tied to this component. Additionally, the sightlines are notch-cut into the front of the shoe. In addition to the shoe, we evaluate the ease of blade replacement, the saw’s weight, and features such as degree markings and positive stops at joint cut angles.  The few but significant features that the Kobalt lacks are substantial. Positive bevel stops are preferred at joint cut angles such as 45 and 90. We would also like a marker for the significant but less frequent 22.5. The Kobalt is devoid of these particulars. In addition, the sightlines are slightly asymmetrical. Positively, the saw’s bevel and depth adjustments are marked and simple to set. Additionally, the sightlines are visible throughout the entire cut.  Cutting is an essential component of any saw evaluation. However, the primary purpose of our cutting tests is to determine the power of the motor driving the saw blade. The ease of use metric addresses the precision of the cuts, while the following metric addresses the number of cuts that can be made on a single battery charge. The cutting analysis examines ripping and crosscutting, emphasizing the saw’s limits. Despite its 6 1/2-inch blade size, typical of medium-powered saws, the Kobalt is the class leader.  The Kobalt KCS is a medium-sized saw with sufficient cutting power, a fantastic battery life, and well-designed bevel and depth adjustments. The usability features are mainly satisfactory. Nonetheless, the absence of positive stops in the bevel and the lack of precision in the sightlines are glaring omissions.
