12 Best Android Phones 2022: Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo And More

The theme of this year’s smartphone releases appears to be incremental improvements rather than radical transformations. From the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra to the OnePlus 10 Pro to the Google Pixel 7 Pro, the flagships of 2022 thus far appear to be remarkably like their 2021 counterparts, with many even sporting identical camera hardware. However, a closer inspection reveals that each phone has become even more refined and well-rounded.

While this may sound mundane, it’s essential not to overlook the importance of fine-tuning the minor details to create an even more enjoyable experience. If you’re in the market for a new smartphone, XDA has tested nearly every model, and these are our top picks in each category based on your needs and budget.

Our Top Picks

How to purchase the ideal Android phone

When deciding on a new smartphone, there are numerous features to consider. While aesthetics is important, you should also focus on functionality and performance. Most flagship phones (which typically cost over £700) will be more than adequate in all areas, but cheaper devices may have limitations. The essential factors can be reduced to five questions…

What’s the best smartphone display for me?

You likely won’t notice the difference between a 1,080p and 1,440p display on a device of this size, and 4K is entirely unnecessary. Contrast and color reproduction are significantly more critical.

AMOLED displays always look fantastic, with excellent sRGB coverage and perfect contrast. If you don’t intend to do much photo editing or movie viewing on your device, a standard IPS LCD screen with a resolution of 1080p or 720p is sufficient.

12 Best Android Phones 2022: Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo And More

Whether you prefer Samsung, Google, or OnePlus, these are currently the best Android phones available.

1. Best Android phone overall: Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”1″]

The Galaxy S22 Ultra reintroduces the unique and versatile camera system of the Galaxy S21 Ultra, but with superior software processing and computational photography intelligence for an even better camera system: shots in low light are less noisy and better balanced, especially with the primary camera; videos are more stable, and the zoom capabilities are even more impressive. This phone can capture images with a 10x magnification that are incredibly clear and crisp, as well as 30x respectably good photos.

Even though the 100x shots are still subpar, they have improved significantly. The ultra-wide camera offers one of landscape photography’s broadest fields of view. Due to the powerful 3X telephoto lens and excellent computational photography, Samsung’s portrait mode has improved dramatically over the past few years.

Granted, the Exynos 2200 has a few minor performance issues with intensive gaming; the 45W wired charging has no practical time advantage over 25W charging, and the phone’s sharp corners are not exceptionally comfortable to hold. The Galaxy S22 Ultra has no other significant flaws besides these complaints. This is the proverbial “kitchen sink” phone; Samsung threw everything at it.

Key Features
  • Excellent camera
  • Phenomenal display
  • Stylus support
  • Bulky
  • Expensive
  • Slower charging

2. Also great: SAMSUNG Galaxy S22+ Android Smartphone

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”2″]

If you find the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s $1,200 price to be a tad steep, the Galaxy S22 Plus offers many of the same great features for a penny less than $1,000. You will not receive the S-Pen stylus or the 10x Periscope zoom lens. Still, you will receive a gorgeous 120Hz OLED display, an excellent 50MP main camera with decent sensor size, a 12MP ultra-wide lens that can capture wide landscape shots, and a perfect 3x telephoto zoom lens. In other words, this phone is still capable of capturing images of the highest quality, despite lacking the ultra-zoom capabilities of its Ultra sibling.

We also like the back design, which features a camera module that overflows the sides and blends into the aluminum chassis. Gorilla Glass protects both the front and back glass. The Galaxy S22 Plus’s build quality is identical to the Ultra’s.

Samsung’s software is also excellent at multitasking, and the South Korean tech giant guarantees four years of Android updates, so you’ll be updated at least through Android 16.

While the Galaxy S22 Plus is not Samsung’s ultimate slab phone, it is more than sufficient for most consumers.

Key Features
  • Stunning screen
  • Good camera setup
  • Fast processor
  • Apt for gaming
  • Strong build quality
  • Slow charging speed
  • Smudge magnet
  • No charger in the box

3. Best Android phone for most people: Google Pixel 7

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”3″]

This category is challenging because the phone that tops this list typically does not have the most premium features. But it is the best phone for most people, the phone that regular consumers should consider first due to its performance, features, and value.

And the newly released Google Pixel 7, with a starting price of $599, wins this category. Despite costing almost half as much as a typical flagship phone, the Pixel 7 includes several key features, such as Google’s second-generation Tensor G2 silicon and a 50MP main camera, which, combined with Google’s camera software prowess, is arguably the best main camera available. In addition, you receive a 6.3-inch OLED display (slightly smaller than the Pixel 6’s 6.4-inch display), IP68 water resistance, and a gorgeous, unique design with entertaining color options.

This is a pure Google phone, so you can anticipate exclusive Android-Pixel features and the quickest software updates. And with Android 12 undergoing one of the most significant visual overhauls in years, now is the best time to have exclusive access to everything Android 12. The Pixel 7 is the best phone for most people and has the best overall value on this list.

Key Features
  • Order the new Google Pixel 7 today and get a $100 Amazon Gift Card on us
  • Ends October 23rd, 2022 at 11:59pm PT, while supplies last and subject to availability
  • Offer cannot be combined, is non-transferable and not valid for cash or cash equivalent. If a qualifying item in your order is returned, you’ll be reimbursed for what you return, minus the value of the special offer
  • Refined design and hardware across the board
  • Face unlock is back, and the in-display fingerprint scanner is much better
  • Iterative software improvements for last year’s cameras
  • Considering inflation, $600 is an even better deal than last year’s Pixel 6
  • Still no telephoto camera
  • Phone gets rather hot in heavy use and while charging
  • The fingerprint sensor and face unlock still aren’t as reliable as they should be
  • Battery life is okay, but not great

4. Best mid-range Android phone: Google Pixel 6a

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”4″]

The Google Pixel 6a possesses many of the same strengths as the Pixel 6 (and even the Pixel 7), such as the distinctive back design, Google’s silicon, and valuable and outstanding Pixel software. However, it is less expensive than those other smartphones.

So, what do you sacrifice by saving that extra dollar, and do these sacrifices matter? The Pixel 6a’s exterior is less premium. The back and side frames are made of plastic, and the front glass is protected by Gorilla Glass 3, as opposed to the Pixel 6’s Victus glass. This means the front of the Pixel 6a is more likely to shatter than the front of the Pixel 6 if both are dropped from the same height. Ironically, the 6a’s plastic back makes it more durable.

The Pixel 6a is slightly less water- and dust-resistant than the Pixel 6, as it has IP57 water resistance instead of IP68. Your 6a will survive a dip in the water if you immediately retrieve it. The OLED display on the 6a is slightly smaller at 6.1 inches and only 60 Hz. Additionally, there is less RAM and a slightly smaller battery.

Pixel 6a is the best option if you’re in the market for a phone but cannot spend more than $400. If not constrained by that budget? The Pixel 7 or any other previously mentioned smartphones are more capable devices.

Key Features
  • 6.1″ FHD+ display[12] – up to 60Hz
  • 12 MP wide – 12 MP ultrawide[13] – 8 MP front camera
  • 6 GB RAM 128 GB storage[14]
  • 24-hour battery[2] – Wired charging[4]
  • Google Tensor
  • Top drawer performance
  • Smaller size
  • Impressive camera
  • Guaranteed software updates
  • Rear plastic scratches easily
  • Charges slow and hot
  • Only 60Hz display

5. Best Android phone for software and speed: OnePlus 10 Pro Android Smartphone

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”5″]

OnePlus’ OxygenOS has lost a bit of its identity over the past year, ever since OnePlus and OPPO admitted to being the same company and OxygenOS began resembling OPPO’s ColorOS. But here’s the thing: ColorOS is good, and the “colorized” version of OxygenOS that runs on the OnePlus 10 Pro is still one of the quickest and most fluid operating systems available. Currently, every Android flagship offers a 120Hz refresh rate, but OxygenOS’ (and ColorOS’) animations are noticeably faster and smoother than, say, Samsung’s OneUI, which occasionally experiences dropped frames. Google’s Pixel UI has somewhat fluid animations, and there’s a case for it taking this spot. Still, OxygenOS is slightly more customizable, with a better Always-On Display and more useful shortcut gestures.

The images captured by the OnePlus 10 Pro have vibrant colors and a wide dynamic range. If we must find a flaw, it’s in the ultra-wide sensor, where the image sensor is smaller than on the OnePlus 9 Pro from the previous year, resulting in ultra-wide shots that are less detailed.

It’s one of the few Android camera apps that can switch between lenses without the jerky animations you’d see on a Samsung or Sony phone when performing the same action. The OnePlus 10 Pro is still a speedy phone, from its camera app to its charging speeds.

The OnePlus 10 Pro ships with an 80W fast-charging brick (65W in the United States) that can charge the phone from 0% to 100% in approximately 27 minutes. The phone also supports wireless charging up to 50W, which can charge the phone from 0% to 100% in 43 minutes. To achieve these speeds, the official OnePlus wireless charger is required.

The OnePlus 10 Pro is an attractive, refined Android smartphone that should satisfy your need for speed.

Key Features
  • Unleash the power of 5G
  • Powerful triple camera System, co-developed with Hasselblad
  • QHD+ 3216 x 1440 (120Hz)
  • Alexa Hands-free capable
  • Capture the bigger picture with a 150º Ultra-Wide Camera
  • OnePlus Billion Color Solution for Photography
  • Smart 120Hz Display with LTPO 2.0
  • The best performance for mobile gaming enthusiasts
  • Charge forward with 65W fast charging/50W Wireless Charging
  • Looks
  • Superb Display visuals
  • Thermal Performance
  • Battery life
  • Reliable main camera
  • No IP rating in India
  • Secondary cameras are not that great

6. Best point-and-shoot camera phone: Google Pixel 7 Pro

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”6″]

Google’s computational photography was so far ahead of the competition at the time that its first three Pixel phones had the best still-camera capabilities of any phone available. Since then, other smartphone manufacturers have improved their computational photography capabilities. Add to that the fact that Google didn’t bother upgrading its camera hardware for the Pixel 4 and 5, and by roughly 2019, the Pixel was no longer the best camera phone available.

Google reclaimed the throne with the Pixel 6 Pro in 2018 (at least in this category of the best point-and-shoot) due to the company’s decision to upgrade its camera hardware to keep up with the competition. The Pixel 7 Pro further refines the Pixel 6 Pro system introduced last year.

The hardware of the Pixel 7 Pro’s primary camera is identical to that of the Pixel 6 Pro: a 50MP Samsung GN1 sensor with a 1/1.31-inch image sensor and a fast aperture. However, the Pixel 7 Pro’s new Tensor G2 chip improves performance, especially in low-light settings, where the Pixel 7 Pro no longer requires a longer exposure time to capture a nighttime image.

However, there’s more to a phone than just its camera, so you can rest assured that the Pixel 7 Pro also excels in other areas. Because it is an LTPO panel, the 120Hz, 6.7-inch display has a variable refresh rate to conserve battery life. Everyone at XDA is a fan of the device’s distinctive design, especially its striking visor and vibrant hues.

The Pixel 6 Pro was the first phone to feature truly impressive hardware, and the Pixel 7 Pro features subtle improvements across the board.

Key Features
  • Order the new Google Pixel 7 Pro today and get a $200 Amazon Gift Card on us
  • Ends October 23rd, 2022 at 11:59pm PT, while supplies last and subject to availability
  • Offer cannot be combined, is non-transferable and not valid for cash or cash equivalent. If a qualifying item in your order is returned, you’ll be reimbursed for what you return, minus the value of the special offer
  • Superb display
  • Incredible, versatile cameras
  • Strong battery life
  • Exclusive software features
  • Divisive design
  • Big and heavy
  • Slow charging

7. Best for software updates: SAMSUNG Galaxy S22 Android Smartphone

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”7″]

Don’t think of the S22 as a poor man’s S22 Ultra; Samsung’s standard flagship model strikes a super-balanced act of specs and features with few flaws and a surprisingly compact design.

As a result, you get some of the best performance currently available in an Android phone, a glass-bodied design, and Android 12 (launched with Samsung’s One UI 4.1) with a promise of years of software support.

The battery life is a little weak, and some camera features will likely benefit from firmware updates, but this is still an excellent example of a flagship Android device.

Key Features
  • Strong camera
  • Beautiful, compact design
  • Long-term software updates
  • Sub-par battery life
  • Only 25W charging
  • Worse value than rivals

8. Best Android phone for gaming: ASUS ROG Phone 6 Pro

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”8″]

The ASUS ROG Phone 5 Ultimate was our pick for the best gaming phone of 2021, and its 2022 update is even better, making it an easy favorite for the best gaming phone of 2022 thus far.

So why is the ROG Phone 6 Pro a gaming monster? Let’s begin with the 165Hz display, which can operate continuously at the highest refresh rate without micro-stuttering. Notably, the display is not an LTPO display, but this is not a significant issue for a gaming-focused phone. The selfie camera is located in the thin bezel above the screen, allowing for a completely uninterrupted display. The display also has a touch sampling rate of 720Hz, which means it scans for input every 1.4ms. As a result of the increased touch sampling rate, the Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro has a touch latency of 23ms, according to the manufacturer.

Add a 6,000 mAh battery to handle the variable refresh rate, so you won’t have to worry about finding a charger in the middle of the day. Based on our testing, this phone can easily last a day and a half if used as a “normal smartphone,” and even if you play games on it, unless you’re playing marathon sessions, it can last a day on a single charge.

Because it is a gaming phone, the ROG Phone 6 Pro has functional shoulder buttons called “AirTriggers” that provide extra control for first-person shooters in a way that standard smartphones cannot. In addition, there is a rear display dubbed “ROG Vision,” on which you can display graphics to add flair.

Based on our testing, the ROG Phone 6 is a beast of a performer, able to run games at 60 frames per second with minimal drops. All benchmarks are also at the top of the rankings.

There is a 50MP IMX766 primary sensor on the camera front, a 13MP ultrawide (f/2.4) 2MP macro setup, and a 12MP front-facing camera. Photos captured by this phone are sharp, vibrant, and generally good, but video recording isn’t the best due to shaky stabilization and sudden lighting shifts.

Key Features
  • Storage: 512GB 18GB RAM
  • Display: 6.78 20.4:9 (2448 x 1080) Samsung AMOLED. Corning Gorilla Glass Victus
  • Battery: Equivalent 6000 mAh
  • Superb display
  • Incredible, versatile cameras
  • Strong battery life
  • Exclusive software features
  • Divisive design
  • Big and heavy
  • Slow charging

9. Best large foldable phone: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”9″]

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 initially appears to be a minor and iterative update to the already-excellent Galaxy Z Fold 3. Still, Samsung has made several minor yet significant enhancements.

First, Samsung reduced the thickness of the hinge by a few millimeters so that it protrudes less from the side of the phone than before. Samsung then allocated this additional space to the outer display, resulting in an ever-so-slightly wider screen. This is a positive development, as the outside screen of the Fold series has always been somewhat elongated and cramped.

Samsung then enhanced the camera’s hardware. The Fold 3’s trio of 12MP cameras were, at best, adequate, but the Fold 4 now features a 50MP sensor with a larger 1/1.53-inch image sensor size. The 10MP zoom lens has been upgraded to a 3X telephoto lens. However, the ultra-wide remains unchanged at 12MP, but Samsung’s superior computational photography has marginally improved performance.

Samsung has also fine-tuned the software to maximize the display’s size. One of our favorite new features is the taskbar, a bar that runs along the bottom of the phone and displays your most frequently used or most recently used applications. You can quickly switch between apps from this bar without returning to the home screen. You can remove this bar if you don’t require it or don’t want the distraction.

Additionally, Samsung collaborated with third-party app developers to maximize the Fold 4’s larger display. For instance, Spotify and Google Meet will launch with a layout optimized for the Fold’s larger display.

The Galaxy Z Fold 4’s 4,400 mAh battery provides enough juice to power the device for an entire day, and for those of us at XDA who own one, the device has had no trouble lasting a whole day on a single charge. The phone can be wired or wirelessly charged if it needs recharging. Reverse wireless charging is also available for devices such as the Galaxy Buds.

Key Features
  • 256GB
  • Flex Mode
  • Hands Free Video
  • Multi Window View
  • Foldable Display
  • S Pen Compatible
  • Foldable design
  • Brilliant display
  • Decent camera
  • Processing capability
  • Charging capacity
  • Affordability

10. Best small foldable phone: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”10″]

If you’ve ever lamented the escalating size of smartphones and want a device that won’t create a bulge in your pocket, you should consider the Galaxy Z Flip 4. In contrast to the Galaxy Z Fold 4, a tablet that transforms into a phone, the Flip 4 is a standard-sized smartphone that folds into a compact square about the size of a coaster or a makeup compactor (dimensions: 84.9 x 71.9 x 17.1 mm). Externally, Samsung’s hardware and design did not change significantly, but the creation of the Flip 3 was universally praised for its beauty and functionality. This means you still have a 6.7-inch, 120Hz display, and a 1.9-inch exterior cover display.

Samsung enhanced the usability of the exterior screen by enabling it to display any app. While some applications will look ridiculous on the tiny display, it’s generally good news that you are not restricted to viewing widgets only on the exterior screen. This means the Flip can be utilized slightly more when it is closed.

There is a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 processor with 8GB of RAM and a larger 3,700 mAh battery inside. This battery capacity may seem modest, but the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 is a highly efficient processor. We cannot guarantee that the Flip 4 will be an all-day phone for you, but battery life will not be as poor as in previous Flips. The hinge on the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is stronger than ever, and like the Galaxy Z Flip 3, it features IPX8 water resistance.

The hinge’s ability to remain half-folded, which Samsung dubs “Flex Mode,” expands the Galaxy Z Flip 4’s range of applications. For instance, it can be folded into an L-shape, placed on a table, and used as a hands-free video calling or viewing device. Similarly, you can take time-lapse or long-exposure photographs without a tripod or holding the phone yourself.

Key Features
  • 128GB
  • 6.7″ Dynamic AMOLED
  • 12MP Wide | 12MP Ultra Wide
  • Informative Cover Screen
  • Compact, Foldable Design
  • Capture On One Screen, Text On The Other
  • Never Miss A Notification
  • Perfectly Pocket Sized
  • Stunning design
  • Top specs
  • Waterproof
  • Affordable (for a foldable)
  • No telephoto camera
  • Durability still a doubt

11. Best for multitasking: Microsoft Surface Duo 2

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”11″]

If productivity is of the utmost importance, then two screens are superior to one. The Microsoft Surface Duo 2 is the only dual-screen phone on the market that does not utilize obsolete hardware. Bringing back the original concept, the Surface Duo 2 consists of two screens connected by a 360-degree hinge. The Surface Duo 2 improves on the first model’s subpar single-camera setup, its obsolete SoC (even at the time of release), and its tiny battery.

Microsoft equipped the Surface Duo 2 with the Snapdragon 888, the best SoC in Android to date. The original Duo was released with the Snapdragon 855 when the 865 was already available. Despite the two screens, the battery capacity has been increased to 4,449 mAh, which can power the device for a full 12- to 13-hour day on a single charge. The screen’s refresh rate has increased from 60Hz to 90Hz, and its bezels have shrunk slightly, though they’re still substantial. Therefore, the Surface Duo 2 is an improvement in every hardware respect.

If we had to choose the best phone, it would be the Galaxy S22 Ultra. However, the fact that the Google Pixel 7 is several hundred dollars less expensive makes it highly appealing. For those who do not mind importing, the OPPO Find X5 Pro is comparable to the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra in many respects (and wins in some). However, if you have the financial means, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 remains the ultimate all-in-one device.

Key Features
  • Open two screens and discover limitless possibilities. Now with lightning-fast 5G and dynamic triple lens camera. (3)
  • Discover apps built for two screens. Enhanced apps (1) make the most of two screens and light up new reading, gaming, music, and entertainment experiences.
  • Drag and drop to move images, text, files, and more between apps in a way that’s easy, smooth, and fast. Grab that to-do list. Plan your shopping. Drag a photo over to Outlook email. (1)
  • Create your favorite combos with App Groups. Personalize Surface Duo 2 and do things your way by pairing and launching any two apps at the same time with one touch.
  • Next-level notetaking and sketching wherever you are. Pair Surface Slim Pen 2* with Surface Duo 2 for exceptional on-screen writing across Microsoft 365 (1) apps on two screens.
  • You’re going to need Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Don’t forget to add Microsoft 365
  • Big boosts to processor and cameras from the first Surface Duo
  • Excellent multitasking ability
  • Thin and well-built hardware
  • Nice looking design
  • Useful pen support
  • Flexible hinge is great for reading and playing games
  • 90Hz refresh rate makes scrolling feel smooth
  • More expensive than first Surface Duo
  • Full-screen experience marred by separate display panels
  • Frustratingly inconsistent and buggy software
  • Lousy camera
  • Only 8GB RAM

12. Best phone for creatives: Xperia PRO-I 5G smartphone

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”12″]

At a staggering cost of $2,500, the Sony Xperia Pro is not suitable for everyone. However, if you are a photographer or videographer looking for professional-level camera phone features, there is no better option. The Xperia Pro is essentially four products in one:

  • A phone
  • A camera monitors
  • A quick photo file transfer device
  • A 5G device suitable for live broadcasting

The Xperia Pro is essentially a repackaged Xperia 1 II with the addition of a micro-HDMI port and a slightly larger body. Appropriate for a severe piece of equipment, it appears unapologetically utilitarian and unadorned. It features a dedicated shutter button, a power button doubles as a fingerprint reader, and a new hardware shortcut button.

The Xperia Pro is Sony’s first 5G phone in the United States. Combining 5G and the micro-HDMI port enables direct live streaming of video content from an external camera to social media platforms such as YouTube and Twitch. That means I can use a Sony A7SIII camera and an excellent lens to capture 4K video live and then have the Xperia Pro upload the video signal over 5G (preferably mm Wave, the fastest type of 5G) to whatever broadcasting platform I’m using.

Key Features
  • World´s first native 4K 120fps high frame rate recording in a smartphone[ii]
  • Eye AF and Object tracking keeps subjects in focus for videos and stills
  • Triple camera array w/ ZEISS optics (16mm/24mm/50mm) and 3D iToF sensor
  • Anti-distortion shutter helps suppress the rolling-shutter effect
  • 12bit RAW for smooth color gradation[iii] and high dynamic range
  • Professional level video monitor features
  • Robust utilitarian build
  • Live broadcast streaming over 5G
  • As a phone its essentially the Xperia 1 II
  • Price is high limiting its narrow appeal
  • 2020 specs and Android 10
  • Wished it recorded video via HDMI input

What we look for in the best Android phones

We’ve reviewed hundreds of Android phones over the years at Android Authority, but you may have different criteria when choosing the correct device. Here is a brief list of the factors we consider during our time with each device to determine which are most important.

Price and value

Smartphones regularly exceed $1,000, but spending more does not always result in a superior device. We evaluate the price of the hardware and software features offered by a phone and its competitors. Most of the devices on this list are flagships, as this is a list of the best Android devices, but we also have a list of the best Android devices under $100.

When discussing performance, we primarily refer to a phone’s processor or system on a chip (SoC). At this point, even mid-range devices are capable of excellent day-to-day performance. Still, the latest Qualcomm powerhouses are required to smooth scrolling on high-resolution, high-speed displays and achieve the best frame rates in demanding games. Other alternatives, such as Google’s Tensor, focus on machine learning to unlock features such as enhanced image processing and real-time translation. RAM is another factor we consider. We recommend at least 6GB of RAM for optimal performance, with gains diminishing beyond 12GB.

We anticipate multiple lenses for the best Android phones for greater mobile photography versatility. Megapixel counts play a small role in providing good detail, but the software is currently the most crucial factor. Google has traditionally been the leader in image processing, but Samsung, Sony, and Oppo are among the best. Examine our camera shootout for examples of the finest models.

5G isn’t as widespread as we’d like it to be in 2022, but if you’re in the market for a new smartphone, we recommend devices with 5G connectivity to future-proof it as much as possible. It is important to note that 5G is available in various flavors, including the fast but short-range mmWave and the slightly slower sub-6GHz. Even if your phone doesn’t support mmWave, you probably don’t need it unless you live in a major city in the United States.

Build materials

Most high-end Android phones are composed of a combination of glass and metal, but their level of protection varies. Gorilla Glass Victus is significantly more durable than Gorilla Glass 5, but you’ll likely still want to protect it with a case. You should also be aware that foldable devices are especially susceptible to damage, especially the hinge mechanism.

When to Buy a New Android Phone

The Android release cycle has become perpetual, and new flagship devices appear to be introduced monthly. However, now is a great time to purchase. The only significant releases on the horizon are the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, both of which are scheduled for October release.

The Best 5G Android Phones

Almost every high-end smartphone sold today will support 5G. If you’re purchasing a lower-end device, you shouldn’t worry too much; AT&T and Verizon’s nationwide 5G systems don’t provide a significant performance boost over 4G. In our most recent tests of the Best Mobile Networks, T-Mobile came out on top since even the lowest-end new T-Mobile Android phones now support mid-band 5G.

C-band phones will provide the fastest network speeds in the future (band n77). C-band networks on AT&T and Verizon are considerably quicker than 4G and low-band 5G systems. Many phones have C-band connectivity, but you should verify that the phone you’re considering supports it. Each review specifies whether a phone supports C-band to facilitate the process.

What is the best Android phone currently available?

Whether you favor a large or small phone, a complex or blessedly simple interface, there is a brilliant Android phone for you. Google returned to win our hearts with not one but two of the best smartphones currently available for purchase. If you’re looking for a phone that excels in all areas, the Pixel 7 Pro is your best option. It features a more refined design than its predecessor, enhanced performance, and, most importantly, the best smartphone cameras currently available. The Pixel 7 Pro’s primary sensor is comparable to last year’s, but it’s 5x telephoto lens is where it truly shines. Super Res Zoom allows it to reach 30x magnification without sacrificing image quality. The Pixel 7 Pro also undercut Samsung’s closest competition; it is an imposing device.

The Pixel 7 Pro will win over not everyone at $900. The Pixel 7 offers the best value among smartphones currently available. At $600, you are paying significantly less than the price of most flagship smartphones for a device with very few compromises. The Pixel 7 is arguably a better-looking phone than the larger Pixel 7 Pro, and its reduced size compared to the Pixel 6 makes it more comfortable to hold. You will lose that excellent 5x telephoto lens, but with a $300 price difference, you have to question whether it was worth it.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is well worth a look if you’re looking for something more upscale. It is one of the most rugged phones Samsung has ever created. In addition to supporting the S Pen, the Ultra has a significantly longer battery life than the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+. The Galaxy S22 Ultra’s cameras compete with the Google Pixel 6 Pro, offering a superior wide-angle camera and enhanced zoom capabilities in addition to many camera modes and settings.

The S22 Ultra is not Samsung’s most recent high-performance superphone. This title belongs to the Galaxy Z Fold 4, the company’s most recent foldable device. The Z Fold 4, which blurs the lines between smartphone and tablet, promises to provide users with an unparalleled productivity experience. This is Samsung’s best foldable with a 7.6-inch inner display, S Pen support, and Android 12L software enhancements. You’ll have to pay for such an experience on the go, and the Z Fold 4 is not inexpensive. It is the most expensive phone on the market, starting at $1,800 for the 256GB model, and the price alone may deter some potential buyers.

If the $600 price tag of the Pixel 7 seems excessive, the $450 Pixel 6a is the best budget Android phone currently available. You have access to the same Google Feature Drops and software perks as the Pixel 7 and the same Google Tensor processor utilized in the Pixel 6 for nearly identical performance. You will lose wireless charging but maintain water resistance.

It is easy to become confused by all the specifications and features listed on a phone’s product page or in user reviews. 100x zoom cameras, ultrasonic fingerprint sensors, S Pen stylus support, UWB, and the list goes on and on, but what do you require, and what is merely icing on the cake? After determining your budget, there are four essential features to consider when purchasing a new phone.

  • Camera
  • Screen
  • Battery
  • Software & updates

In recent years, the performance gap between mid-range and premium smartphone chipsets has shrunk significantly. In conclusion, most phones in the same price range offer the same level of performance, and in the flagship segment, you’re also likely to receive more memory than you require.

Before selecting the best Android phone, determine your budget. Create a list of desired smartphone features, such as wireless charging, 4K video recording, an in-display fingerprint reader, etc.

After making all these choices, look for a model with the best price-to-value ratio. You will need to choose a reputable brand for this.

After selecting the brand, compare models with the desired specifications and determine if the previous-generation model has everything you require. It may be a better value than the newest model.

Once the model has been chosen, it is necessary to consider how much RAM and storage space will be required and to purchase a smartphone with the specifications needed.
