Best Alienware Laptops: The Brand’s Top Gaming Laptops

The best Alienware laptops have cutting-edge components housed in sleek, premium chassis. However, you’ll also discover that some of the best Alienware laptops are priced more modestly. Machines in the M-Series, for instance, pose a significant threat on the battlefield, and if you time it right, you can often find great deals.

Regardless of your budget, we’ll help you find the ideal Alienware laptop, a 14-inch model with a lower price tag or a 17.3-inch model at the top of the price range. Alienware laptops are propelling the brand even higher in the rankings of the best gaming laptops on the market, and these machines do not come cheap. Despite this, they continue to be popular among PC gamers due to their quality construction and excellent engineering.

To help narrow down the options, we’ve compiled a list of the best Alienware laptops currently available. This list is compiled based on our testing, the components available for purchase in each model, and a thorough examination of competitors’ pricing strategies.

To ensure that you save as much money as possible when making such a substantial but well-placed investment, we’ve also compiled the lowest prices across the web.

How we evaluate Alienware laptops

Finding the best Alienware laptops is a challenging task. Dell only produces a limited number of ranges and models annually, but not all carry the same price tag. Every gaming laptop that crosses our desks is subjected to a battery of industry-standard tests, and we spend a considerable amount of time working and playing with them in everyday life. Thus, we can accurately evaluate the value proposition and determine how far your budget will take you.

Our testing encompasses everything from GPU performance to storage speeds, utilizing 3D Mark, Cinebench, PC Mark 10, and Crystal Disk Mark to ensure that we have standardized data with which to compare models. Then, we examine how each Alienware laptop performs in the real world by running framerate tests on Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Total War: Three Kingdoms, Metro Exodus, The Division 2, and Red Dead Redemption 2.

In addition to incorporating these laptops directly into our daily lives during testing, we can assess their performance in terms of work, play, battery life, portability, and overall quality of life.

You can find additional information on how we evaluate the products we recommend in our complete Hardware Policy, and we’re also demonstrating how we test gaming laptops in detail.

The best Alienware gaming laptops available now

Alienware is Dell’s gaming-specific brand and has existed for roughly as long as gaming laptops have existed. The company has produced some wild portable gaming PCs over the years, and this trend will continue in 2023. We recommend the Alienware m15 as the best laptop due to its excellent balance of powerful specifications, attractive design, and affordable price.

1. The best Alienware gaming laptop overall: Alienware X15 R2

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”1″]

A brand-new Alienware laptop is available now that Dell has updated its X15 and X17 laptops for 2022. New releases are now available, but you may need to break out the piggy bank – these are not inexpensive rigs. Nevertheless, paying for luxury has advantages; this was one of the best-looking and -feeling Alienware laptops we’ve ever handled. Additionally, it is not as expensive as the 17-inch model.

In our guide to the best Alienware laptops, we’ve prioritized the 15.6-inch model over the 17.3-inch model. You still get the sleek form factor, Intel 12th generation chipset, and radical RTX 3080Ti options, but at a significantly reduced price. Don’t get us wrong, these are still premium machines, but with prices slightly below those of 17-inch models, they’re a bit more affordable.

However, you’re in good hands here if you want to go all out. Our RTX 3080 Ti test unit posted awe-inspiring results, outperforming the Razer Blade 15 in industry benchmarks and tearing through game benchmarks.

This is because the Alienware X15 R2 features Intel’s latest 12th-generation processors, the ability to install Nvidia’s RTX 3080 Ti GPU, and LEDs on the back of the chassis that have received particular attention. It’s still the slim, powerful system we’ve all come to appreciate, but it’s been updated to reflect the latest innovations from crucial component manufacturers.

  • CPU: i7-12700H | i9-12900H
  • GPU: RTX 3060 | RTX 3070 Ti | RTX 3080 Ti
  • RAM: up to 32GB
  • Storage: Up to 4TB
  • Display: FHD at 165Hz / 360Hz | QHD at 240Hz
  • Ample power for gaming performance
  • Smooth and gorgeous QHD display
  • Stunning otherworldly design with RGB lighting
  • Rear-orientated ports can be hard-to-reach
  • Middling battery life unplugged
  • RAM comes soldered onto the motherboard

2. The best Alienware gaming laptop for most: Alienware M15 R7

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”2″]

The M15 R7 has replaced the M5 and M6 models to bring the series up to 2022’s standards. With Intel processors of the 12th generation and Nvidia’s Ti graphics cards, you’re getting the latest and greatest under the hood and the thermal management to make them sing. This system barely broke a sweat during testing, surpassing 60 frames per second in even the most extreme benchmarking scenarios. Red Dead Redemption 2 with the highest settings? Is Metro Exodus with RTX completely coupled? No problem whatsoever for this beast.

This model’s performance was comparable to much more expensive Alienware gaming laptops, despite requiring some sacrifices. We were a little disappointed to see the same plastic chassis as the R5 and R6 models here, compared to the rest of the market. Out in the wild, you’ll find considerably cheaper rigs with more durable construction materials. In addition, this laptop was designed with something other than portability in mind. With a weight of under 6 pounds and a form factor to match, this is one you’ll want to keep on your desk.

However, these sacrifices were manageable due to the vehicle’s impressive engine. While it’s not as inexpensive as its predecessors, you’re getting a boatload more for your money. We suggest that anyone in the $1,500-$2,000 price range consider the newest release.

You still receive luxury Alienware design elements, such as the LED strip of RGB lighting that runs around the (abundant) backports. In addition, we were incredibly impressed with the feel of the series keyboard. While not an actual mechanical model (as found in the X17’s more expensive configurations), there was a satisfying tension and a longer travel distance than we typically see in laptop decks.

  • CPU: i7-12700H | i9-12900H
  • GPU: RTX 3050 Ti | RTX 3060 | RTX 3070 Ti | RTX 3080 Ti
  • RAM: up to 64GB
  • Storage: up to 4TB SSD
  • Display: FHD at 165Hz / 360Hz | QHD at 240Hz
  • Incredible gaming performance
  • Intel Alder Lake CPU is amazing
  • Excellent keyboard
  • Display is fast and colorful
  • Not very portable
  • Particularly loud fans

3. The best Alienware M-series laptop: Alienware m17 R4

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”3″]

The fantastic m17, in its fourth iteration, is one of our favorite gaming laptops, and for a good reason. If you’re in the market for a new laptop and gaming is a priority, you should consider the m17 R4. It is one of Alienware’s more attractive products, but its beauty is superficial. The gaming behemoth from Alienware is also packed with serious hardware, including an awe-inspiring 17.3-inch display. It will not be inexpensive but acquiring one will give you more strength than Popeye after seven days of eating spinach.

While the m17 R4’s mighty 10th Gen Intel Core i9 CPU already provides an abundance of power, the addition of Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3080 graphics with 16GB of VRAM amps things up. Perform feats of prowess and capture every frame on the m17’s brilliant and vibrant display with a refresh rate of up to 360Hz. It combined with 32GB of RAM and blazing-fast SSDs; it’s easy to see how the Alienware m17 dominated the competition in our benchmark tests.

Recently, Alienware introduced the brand-new m17 R5, promoting it as “the most powerful 17-inch AMD Advantage laptop in the world.” Based on what we know so far, this claim is credible. This new revision offers powerful configurations topped by a Ryzen 9 6980HX processor and a choice between an Nvidia GeForce or AMD Radeon GPU. If you are a fan of AMD’s products, it may be worthwhile to wait before investigating further.

  • CPU: Intel Core i9-10980HK
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080
  • RAM: 32GB
  • Storage: x2 1TB PCI m.2 SSDs
  • Display: 17.3-inch, 4K @ 60Hz / FHD @ 144Hz, 360Hz
  • Top-notch 360Hz display
  • Great gaming performance
  • Attractive chassis
  • Comfortable customizable keyboard
  • Plenty of ports
  • Very expensive
  • AMD's CPUs are faster
  • Basically no battery life
  • Bottom-mounted speakers
  • Noisy fan
  • Heavy

4. The best Alienware OLED laptop: Alienware m15 R4 (RTX 3070)

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”4″]

The Alienware m15 R4 may be smaller than its sibling, the m17, but it still needs to be more ambitious. Our review unit was equipped with the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070, but configurations with the more powerful RTX 3080 are for sale. Nevertheless, in our benchmark tests, the 15-inch laptop outperformed averages in games such as Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Due to its 10th Generation Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, and speedy 1TB SSD, the Alienware m15 excelled in our comprehensive performance tests.

However, the m15 R4’s specifications are not the only thing to behold, as it also features a stunning 4K OLED display. Not only was the display crisp and bright, but it also covered 149.5% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, resulting in a picture that was extraordinarily vivid and colorful. While the 4K OLED model is limited to a 60Hz refresh rate, other configurations allow for a Full HD panel with up to 300Hz refresh rates. Regardless of your choice, Nvidia’s Optimus and G-Sync technologies are available to eliminate screen tearing, optimize performance, and guarantee the smoothest gaming experience possible.

While we have nothing but positive things to say about the Alienware m15 R4, it is essential to note that there are currently newer models available. The m15 R6 features numerous enhancements, including an 11th Generation Intel Core processor, Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 graphics, additional RAM, and refresh rates up to 360Hz.

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-10870H
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060, 3070, 3080
  • RAM: 16GB
  • Storage: 1TB SSD
  • Display: 15.6-inch, 4K OLED/4K @ 60Hz, FHD @ 144Hz, 300Hz
  • Excellent gaming performance
  • Beautiful 4K OLED display
  • Three M.2 slots for expansion
  • 1TB of SSD storage
  • Plenty of useful ports
  • Customizable keyboard (per-key) and chassis lighting
  • Soldered RAM
  • Smallish trackpad
  • Short battery life
  • 60Hz 4K display a debatable choice for gaming

5. The best Alienware AMD laptop: Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”5″]

It may be uncommon to see an Alienware laptop powered by AMD, but it is almost always noteworthy whenever one is spotted. The m15 Ryzen Edition is a new version of Alienware’s brilliant gaming laptop, this time combining the power of an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 GPU with the speed of an AMD Ryzen 7/9 CPU. While some may prefer an AMD-only system, the combination of Intel and AMD is impressive, delivering power, performance, and sleek good looks.

Our benchmark testing put the Ryzen R7 5800H processor to the test and performed admirably. In terms of overall performance, the notebook from Alienware outperformed the average premium laptop in synthetic testing, 4K video transcoding, and file transfer speed. In terms of gaming performance, the m15 demonstrated high frame rates across various AAA titles with medium settings. While testing games at their highest settings, the m15 struggled to meet the average performance of premium gaming laptops, but it achieved 60 frames per second in most titles.

Alienware’s laptops are renowned for their power, but the X- and M-series notebooks, including the m15 Ryzen Edition, also feature excellent displays. Expect super-fast refresh rates regardless of the panel you select, with 1080p displays capable of up to 360Hz and 1440p displays capable of 240Hz. The response times of both screens range between 1 and 3 milliseconds, and their brightness and color fidelity are equally remarkable. With a price tag of less than $2,000, this combination of picture quality and performance is to be noticed.

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen R7 5800H / Ryzen 9 5800H, 5900HX
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060, 3070
  • RAM: 8GB, 16GB, 32GB
  • Storage: 256GB/512GB/1TB PCIe m.2 SSD
  • Display: 15.6-inch, 1080p @ 165Hz, 360Hz / 1440p @ 240Hz
  • Class-leading CPU performance
  • Strong 1080p gaming with RTX 3060 GPU and 165Hz display
  • Long battery life
  • Weight undermines portability
  • 512GB SSD as configured is restrictive at this price

6. The best 17-inch Alienware laptop: Alienware X17

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”6″]

If you desire a larger screen, the most suitable Alienware laptop is the new X17 R2. There is plenty of power under the hood, with the most recent 12th generation i7 and i9 processors, up to 64GB of RAM, 4TB of SSD storage, and a magnificent display.

The form factor of the Alienware X17, with its luxury accents and deep-backed hinges, remains unchanged. The LED trackpad, which we adored on the R1 model, has been removed from the R2. However, there is no point in lamenting RGB when there is so much power under the hood. We achieved 30fps in 4K testing, which we cannot say for the similarly priced Razer Blade Pro 17. Thanks to the Alienware M15’s redesigned cooling system and larger chassis, temperatures never exceeded those of the Razer Blade Pro 17.

This is not the ideal Alienware laptop for everyone. The heavier form factor and desktop-grade configurations will not be suitable for most players, nor will you spend a small fortune to acquire it. However, if you have the budget for a larger laptop, this is the Alienware model we recommend.

The Alienware X17 retains the slim design of the X15, but the mechanical keyboard and additional ports add a touch of thickness. If you desire a premium large-screen experience, these specifications will likely satisfy you. This laptop looks and feels fantastic, making it a statement piece for gamers who take their hobby seriously.

To ensure you’re receiving the best value for your money, we’d recommend 12th-generation Intel processors and an RTX 3070 Ti or RTX 3080 Ti GPU in the R2 update.

  • CPU: i7-12700H | i9-12900H
  • GPU: RTX 3060 | RTX 3070Ti | RTX 3080 Ti
  • RAM: up to 64GB
  • Storage: up to 4TB SSD (2x2TB)
  • Display: FHD at 165Hz / 360Hz | UHD at 120Hz
  • Sleek new look
  • Fast, attractive 4K 120Hz display option
  • GeForce RTX 3080, 2TB SSD in test model delivers primo gaming
  • Superior keyboard, with Cherry MX mechanical keys
  • Very expensive as configured
  • Base model is $2,000-plus, but lightly configured
  • Heavier and scarcely thinner than m17
  • Massive power brick
  • Loud fans, especially in boosted performance modes

7. The best 14-inch Alienware gaming laptop: Alienware x14

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”7″]

With the Alienware x14, Dell has reduced the size of its premium gaming laptops. This is currently the smallest Alienware laptop available, taking the luxurious design of the x15 and x17 models and reducing it to a new 14-inch form factor. Regarding configuration, you’re taking a few steps back, especially in comparison to the high specifications of the larger models.

The x14 is equipped with an RTX 3050, RTX 3050 Ti, or RTX 3060 GPU and an Intel i5-12500H or i7-12700H processor. Even in this smaller form factor, these new-generation processors (and the DDR5 RAM accompanying them) push these graphics cards to new heights. Shadow of the Tomb Raider impressed us with an average of 108 frames per second on the Highest settings, and while more demanding games like Red Dead Redemption 2 presented more of a challenge, we were still able to benchmark at 55 frames per second on High.

This is one of the most affordable Alienware laptops when configured with these specifications. We evaluated an RTX 3060 / i7 configuration, but it costs close to $2,000 to purchase. Given that every Alienware x14 comes with the same 1080p 144Hz display, we found this to be challenging to accept. However, there is excellent value at the lower end of the price spectrum. Therefore, we recommend this machine if you value form factor over performance and are looking for an RTX 3050 GPU.

You’re paying for this machine’s high-end engineering, design, and build quality, which is a super-thin device that can easily slide into any backpack.

  • CPU: i5-12500H / i7-12700H
  • Graphics: RTX 3050 / RTX 3050 Ti / RTX 3060
  • RAM: 16GB – 32GB DDR5
  • Storage: 512GB – 2TB SSD
  • Screen: 14-inch, 1080p, 144Hz
  • Gorgeous design
  • Extremely lightweight and thin
  • Bright, fast G-Sync display
  • Good performance
  • Tiny, slim power brick
  • USB-C charging
  • Wide range of connectivity, including three USB-C ports
  • Expensive
  • Short battery life
  • Cramped keyboard layout
  • Soldered RAM
  • Maxes out with an RTX 3060 and 1080p screen
  • 720p webcam
  • All IO ports are on the rear of the machine

8. The best Alienware laptop for price to performance value: Alienware X15 (2021)

[content-egg module=AmazonNoApi template=item groups=”8″]

Alienware replaced the M15 line with a new flagship in 2021 and refreshed it again in 2022, displacing the M15 line as the pack’s leader. The X15 (and X17 for those desiring a more prominent display) features the most powerful components in a slim chassis designed to match the aesthetic of today’s top-tier machines, which are thinner and lighter. Pricey, but currently the best Alienware laptop on the market, with impressive display specifications and powerful base configurations.

Alienware gaming laptops are already packed with power, which can occasionally lead to thermal frustrations. However, the X15 has numerous intelligent cooling features and new thermal limiting technology. While the X17’s mechanical keyboard is missing here, the price-to-performance ratio is much more favorable, and you still get the most recent hardware.

  • CPU: i7-11800H | i9-11900H
  • GPU: RTX 3060 | RTX 3070 | RTX 3080
  • RAM: 16GB | 32GB
  • Storage: up to 4TB SSD (2x2TB)
  • Display: FHD at 165Hz / 360Hz | QHD at 240Hz
  • Superb 250Hz QHD display
  • Fast battery recharge rate
  • High-frame-rate gaming with RTX 3070 GPU
  • Surprisingly quiet fans
  • Very thin chassis design
  • Surprisingly portable
  • Soldered RAM
  • Slower 110 W TGP GPU when compared to the Alienware m15 R4
  • Insufficient storage in test unit and base model
  • Average battery life

Things to consider when buying an Alienware laptop

Are Alienware laptops expensive?

However, this does not imply that some models are not excellent value. Alienware laptops do not cover the low or middle price ranges, as they only offer high-end products with a hefty price tag; however, when older models drop, they can make for good mid-range options. One of the primary criticisms of Alienware laptops is that they are overpriced compared to other high-end gaming laptops that can perform to the same standard for less. However, this is not always the case, and often these competing machines sacrifice areas such as build quality compared to Alienware.

Life of the Alienware laptop battery

Historically, Alienware laptops have been notoriously power-hungry, resulting in low battery life even when not being used for gaming and requiring them to be plugged in for most of the time. Because of this, the term “desktop replacement” is commonly used to describe Alienware laptops; however, recent models have bucked this trend. The Alienware X17, for example, has a very respectable battery life despite being a slim and robust system.

Dell has officially unveiled the next-generation Alienware laptops, powered by the 13th Gen Intel Core CPUs and next-generation RTX laptop GPUs.

  1. Alienware x17 R2. The best Alienware laptop.
  2. Alienware x15. The best all-round Alienware laptop.
  3. Alienware m17 R4. The best Alienware M-series laptop.
  4. Alienware m15 R4 (RTX 3070) The best Alienware OLED laptop.
  5. Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition. The best Alienware AMD laptop.

Alienware m17 R5

Alienware’s most powerful 17-inch AMD Advantage™ gaming laptop. Featuring Smart Technologies, Alienware Cryo-tech™ cooling, Radeon™ RX graphics and AMD Ryzen™ 6000 Series processors.

Alienware laptops are taking the brand even further up the ranks of the best gaming laptops on the market, and these machines do come with a premium. Still, they remain popular among PC players for good reason, with a solid quality build and excellent engineering.

Alienware Corporation’s top competitors include Brelyon, Razer, and Ngame. Brelyon develops a headset-free, virtual display for gaming and enterprise applications.

Dell announced three new Alienware laptops at CES 2022: the x14, x15 R2, and x17 R2. All three of the laptops feature 12th Gen Intel processors and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30-series laptop graphics. The new Alienware devices should ship this winter with a starting price of $1,799

Are Alienware laptops a good value?

Alienware laptops may appear overpriced; you could call them the “Apple” of gaming. However, their accessibility, usability, and intelligent design set them apart from other manufacturers and justify the price.

Along with formidable technical capabilities that allow them to run today’s games at peak performance, Alienware gaming laptops are pre-assembled and ready to use, lacking a thoughtful design in engineering and aesthetics.

Alienware is eager to ensure that there is something within your price range. The official website provides various build options with varying prices, allowing you to pick and choose. And if you decide in the future, you should opt for more power? It is often simple to open the case and upgrade your system.
