AMD has announced that their CES 2020 press conference will take place on Monday, January 6th. AMD’s CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, will host the high-performance keynote at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. AMD promises to push the boundaries once more, making 2020 a fantastic year for high-performance computing.
AMD Will Push The High-Performance Computing Envelope Again At CES 2020 – Event Will Be Livestreamed On January 6th
AMD had one of the best years in the tech industry in 2019, transitioning its entire CPU and GPU portfolio to the brand new 7nm process technology. AMD introduced several new products, including the popular 3rd Generation Ryzen and Ryzen Threadripper desktop CPUs, 2nd Generation EPYC Rome server CPUs, and Radeon RX 5000 series mobility and desktop GPUs. However, AMD promises to push the envelope even further in 2020, releasing the next generation of high-performance products.
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 31, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — AMD today announced that it will hold a press conference as a part of the official CES 2020 Media Days, and hosted by AMD President and CEO Dr. Lisa Su. The event is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 6 at 2:00 p.m. PST at the Mandalay Bay.
A live stream of the event will be available on the AMD YouTube channel. An archived version of the webcast will be available approximately two hours after the event and can be found on the AMD YouTube channel.
As for what we can expect to see at AMD’s CES 2020 press conference, we know a few products will be announced, but we can also expect a slew of new CPU and GPU announcements covering their 2020 and future lineups. The following are the AMD products that we anticipate seeing at CES 2020.
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X is the world’s first 64-core, high-performance desktop CPU
The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X was first teased in November, but the 64-core chip monster will make its official debut at AMD’s CES 2020 conference. With 64 cores, 128 threads, 288 MB of cache, tons of PCIe lanes, and a TDP of 280W, we know this is the highest-end HEDT CPU available, aimed at the current sTRX4 socket-based TRX40 motherboards.
There is also a chance that we will hear about the Ryzen Threadripper 3980X, a 48-core and 96-thread chip that will render the Intel Xeon W-3175X obsolete once and for all. In 2020, the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X would be the flagship and the only CPU to rule them all!
APUs AMD Ryzen 4000 ‘Renoir’ – 7nm Mobility & Desktop Processors Using Zen 2 Cores
No CES is complete without a mobility announcement, and this year is no exception. AMD is also expected to launch the Renoir Ryzen 4000 APU family. The AMD Renoir APU lineup would bring their mobile processors to the new 7nm Zen 2 platform, offering a significant improvement over existing Zen+-based Ryzen 3000 APUs.
Recent leaks have suggested that the Ryzen 4000 APU family will be much larger than expected, with Ryzen 9 SKUs offering up to 8 cores and 16 threads. The new GPU design would enable much higher clock speeds as well as a modern feature set, boosting the GPU performance of the integrated core. Expect a slew of laptops in a variety of flavors from AMD’s OEM partners, including ASUS, HP, Lenovo, and Dell. We cannot rule out the possibility of an announcement for the 4th Generation Desktop APU lineup, which will replace the current Ryzen 3 3200G and Ryzen 5 3400G APUs.
AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT – Navi Counters GeForce 1660 SUPER and GTX 1660 Ti
AMD’s Radeon RX 5600 XT graphics card is another product that could make an appearance at CES 2020. The Radeon RX 5600 XT, which is based on the 7nm Navi GPU architecture, is expected to have the same core count as the Radeon RX 5700 but with a more cost-effective VRAM design and tuned clocks to deliver more performance per dollar.
According to leaked specifications, the card has 2304 cores, 6 GB of GDDR6 memory, and a TDP of around 150W. The card’s price is expected to be around $279-$299 USD, with significantly better performance than the GeForce GTX 1660 TI and GTX 1660 SUPER. If the pricing and performance figures are as good as stated in recent leaks, this could be a game changer for AMD in the sub $300 US market.
AMD Zen 3 Teaser & New 2020 and Beyond Roadmap?
Now we’re getting into more speculative territory, and I believe that CES is the best platform to kick off the year big, and what could be bigger than a tease of Zen 3, AMD’s next-generation high-performance core architecture, which will power future Ryzen, Ryzen Threadripper, and EPYC CPUs?
We might just get a small performance preview of the Zen 3 core, which would be awesome. We might see a product based on Zen 3, but that could be too soon. But, given how grand a scheme Zen 3 will be for AMD, with a brand new architecture and brand new features, just hearing anything about Zen 3 would be more than enough for all of us enthusiasts.
AMD’s High-End Radeon RX Navi GPUs to Support Ray Tracing?
Finally, how can we forget the high-end Navi GPUs? We’re hearing more rumors about high-end Navi GPUs based on the 2nd Generation RDNA architecture than ever before. Dr. Lisa Su might even surprise us at the end of the keynote by bringing one up on stage.
The next-generation RDNA-based high-end GPUs are expected to include hardware-accelerated ray tracing, as well as additional, computing, higher bandwidth memory design, and the new 7nm+ process node. The graphics card is currently expected to go on sale in the second half of 2020, but the development or early board, or the ‘BIG NAVI’ chip, as I like to call it, could be shown off at the event.
With that said, AMD should have a great CES conference, and let us know in the comments what you want to see at AMD’s conference. As usual, we’ll have a live stream post ready a few hours before the event.
