After eight consecutive quarters of growth, the PC market in India has taken a turn for the worse, but Apple is gaining ground on the strength of the iPad, while its competitors decline.
In the third quarter of 2022, the Indian PC market, which includes desktops, notebooks, and tablets, declined 4% year-over-year to 5.1 million units. The overall decline was driven by notebook shipments, which decreased by 21%.
During the quarter, desktop and tablet shipments increased significantly by 36% to 766,000 units and 24% to 1.5 million units, respectively.
Apple ranked fourth among the top five vendors with 456,000 shipments, a market share of 9%, and the list’s highest annual growth rate of 61.1%. However, the company did not appear at all in the chart for desktop and notebook shipments, which, according to Canalys, suggests that the iPad drove Apple’s growth in India.
The education sector performed well, but PC shipments were negatively impacted by shifting business budgets due to ongoing economic downturns. According to Canalys Analyst Ashweej Aithal, the education industry was a bright spot for the Indian PC market.
“The segment is anticipated to maintain its strength in the future, particularly for tablets, which enjoy a favorable position in India’s digital education expansion strategy. As a result of businesses reprioritizing their IT spending budgets due to the uncertain economic climate, commercial segment shipments decreased by 11% compared to the previous year.”
PC exports to India
Lenovo ranked first in the nation during the quarter, shipping slightly more than one million PCs with a market share of 21.6% despite a decline in growth of 23.4%. Other than the “Others” category, which included multiple companies, only Lenovo shipped millions of PCs.
HP ranked second with 940,000 shipments, an 18.5% market share, and a 25.9% decline in growth. Acer had 532,000 shipments with a market share of 10.5% and grew by 33%.
Apple, in fourth place, was responsible for 456,000 PC shipments in India, accounting for 9.0% of the market share, but it led to a growth of 61.1%. Dell tied for fifth place with Apple at 9% market share, contributing 455,000 shipments and declining by 37.3%.
Apple reappeared when Canalys categorized tablet shipments in India, placing third with 261,000 units, a 17.1% market share, and a robust 70.6% growth.
Early in December, the iPad was also responsible for PC sales. There, desktop shipments fell 31% and notebook shipments fell 3%, but Apple topped the list with just under two million shipments and a 6.5% growth rate.
