The elimination of the G-Sync module could have several advantages. In addition to being less expensive, the new model may not require active cooling, thereby eliminating the fan noise of the original. Additionally, it enables monitor manufacturers to add HDMI 2.1 support, but Alienware chose not to do so to save money.
Alienware has just unveiled a more affordable version of its QD-OLED monitor, which was introduced earlier this year. Due to the omission of the dedicated G-Sync module and G-Sync Ultimate certification, the price of the new AW3423DWF is $200 less than that of the previous model, AW3423DWF.
The AW3423DWF utilizes the same 34-inch ultrawide QD-OLED panel with a 3,440 x 1,500 resolution and a 1800R curve as the AW3423DW. It has a maximum SDR luminance of 250 nits, with HDR content increasing this to 1,000 nits. The display has a 10-bit color depth and covers 99.3 percent of the DCI-P3 color space, enabling it to obtain VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 certification.
Interestingly, the maximum refresh rate has been reduced from 175Hz to 165Hz, but the difference is unlikely to be noticeable. Similar to its more expensive sibling, it will be interesting to see if the 8-bit color will be required when running above 144Hz. Additionally, the monitor’s G-Sync Ultimate certification has been replaced by VESA AdaptiveSync and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro certifications, but it is still compatible with Nvidia graphics cards.
The AW3423DWF features two DisplayPort 1.4 ports, one HDMI 2.0 port, a USB hub with four downstream 5Gbps connectors, and two 3.5mm ports for headphones and microphones. Additionally, Alienware includes a joystick on the underside, which should make navigating the OSD easier.
VESA mount compatibility allows users to replace the included stand, which is height-, tilt-, swivel-, and inclination-adjustable. The monitor’s rear is entirely black, allowing it to be distinguished from the (predominantly white) G-Sync model.
The AW3423DWF from Alienware will begin shipping later this fall for $1,099. This will provide you with one of the best gaming displays available on the market. Additionally, it comes with a 3-year warranty that covers OLED burn-in.
