How to build a longboard

If you think that a longboard is very simple, is only conditionally right. In fact, a classic model consists of a manageable number of individual components which are part of the whole of the longboard. Looking at these different parts in detail, however, it becomes clear how complex the longboard and its structure are. The following article will provide you with an overview of the individual components of a longboard and explain how the board is built.

The Longboard: A “board with four wheels.”

Firstly, the longboard is to be considered in general. It is a more or less elongated board which is equipped with four wheels. However, it is probably self-evident that this definition does not trigger delight in real longboard fans. At this point, it should be a bit more concrete and formulated more professionally.

The essential components of a longboard

Looking at the structure of a longboard, it can be seen that this is composed of the following essential elements :

  • deck
  • Axles/trucks
  • Wheels / Wheels

The longboard is therefore not a board with wheels, but a specially shaped deck, on which four wheels (in the professional world also called Wheels) were installed using axles.

The diverse world of longboards

But even if this description describes the structure of the longboard quite well, it is still far too general. Longboarding is characterized by the fact that it is not an 8/15 sport, but it is perfectly adapted to the needs of the riders. Accordingly, it is also not surprising that the individual parts of a longboard deck, axles, and rollers are distinguished by a multitude of different characteristics and finishes.

This diversity makes it possible to compile a longboard exactly in such a way that it corresponds to the personal driving style and supports it optimally. How this works will be explained in more detail below.

The deck – the shape is what matters

The deck can also be referred to as the heart of the longboard. It not only determines what this looks like but also what driving characteristics it has. If you have already dealt with longboards, you will have noticed that the different decks of longboards are different from one another regarding their form.

This is quite wanted – after all, the shape of a longboard deck determines which styles you can drive with it. While downhill decks are essential for recesses in the area of the wheels, Dancer boards are characterized by unusually long and flat decks.

Tip! Hardly a long-boarder knows from the outset which style is most important to him. As a beginner, choose a model that is suitable for different disciplines. If you have a driving style, you can still adjust your longboard accordingly.

Longboard decks differ, however, not only regarding their form. Their flexibility and curvature have a great influence on the driving behavior of the longboard.

The axles – directional and unlike the skateboard

Contrary to frequent opinions skateboards and longboards differ in part strongly from each other. This is particularly clear when you look at the axes of the longboard more closely. These usually have a completely different symmetry than their skateboard “siblings” and thus ensure that longboards have a completely different driving behavior.

While skateboarding is primarily about tricks and small stunts, the longboard is often understood as a means of movement. Accordingly, it is important that the axles are particularly responsive and responsive to the driver’s instructions.

In general, a distinction when longboarding between two different axis types :

Reverse Kingpin axesThe King-Pin sits obliquely to the axle and gives the Longboard an increased steering pleasure.
Standard Kingpin axesThese axes are similar to those of the skateboard and are used primarily by cruisers and downhillers.

Tip! Are you looking for suitable axles for your longboard? Then pay attention to the width. This must be chosen to match the width of the deck. As a general rule: Select the axes slightly wider than too narrow.

The roles – the true soul of the longboard

Like the axles and the deck, the roles also have a decisive influence on the driving behavior of a longboard. Some experts even go so far as to say that the wheels are the true soul of a longboard and like no other component is responsible for the essence of this. There are various factors when selecting the rollers. These are:

The sizeThe size is as follows: The smaller the rollers, the faster the speed board can be accelerated and decelerated again. However, wide rollers have the advantage that they run very quietly and allow a relaxed driving style.
The degree of hardnessThis factor is significant when it comes to the features of their longboard. While soft rollers are very “smooth” and offer good grip on the road, hard rollers are characterized by excellent controllability.
The edgesIf you buy reels for your longboard, you have two options:

  • Wheels with square edges
  • Wheels with round edges

These characteristics affect the steering and slide behavior of the longboard.

The seat of the ball bearingThe seat of the ball bearing is also referred to as a hub in the professional world. A distinction is made between the following hubs:

  • Centerset: The ball bearing fits centrally and gives the roller extra grip. The wheels use a conical shape.
  • Sideset: The ball bearing sits on the side and gives the roller a good slide behavior. The wheels use one-sided.
  • Offset: This form is a compromise between the center and the side set.

Advantages and disadvantages of a longboard

Other components of the Longboard

When it comes to building a longboard in detail, a few other elements have to be mentioned. These include:

  • Grip tape: A kind of wide adhesive tape glued to the top of the deck. It provides a solid stand and gives the longboard a new look.
  • Bushings: Small plastic parts attached to the axles. The different shapes of the bushings (cylinder, cone, etc.) have different effects on the driving behavior of the longboard.
  • Ball bearings: Components that ensure that the wheels roll properly. Each roller is equipped with two ball bearings, which must be adjusted to the size of the axle pin.
  • Spacer: A useful accessory that is used to prevent the compression of the ball bearings in a roller.
  • Riser pads: Plastic or rubber spacers that absorb shocks and prevent wheel bites (roll and deck tilting).

Even if it does not appear at first sight: A longboard is a complex combination of different components. The structure is accordingly more complicated than is assumed. It is important that you always consider the desired driving characteristics of the longboard when choosing the individual components. If this is too costly, you can also access a fully assembled complete board.
