Promoting the development of a premature baby – that is important for the whole later life. A premature baby is not yet fully developed; it has to make up for some things outside of the mother’s body.
This applies to physical as well as psychological development. Various measures can help your premature baby.
Development of a premature baby
If a child is born before the 37th week of pregnancy or with a birth weight of fewer than 2,500 grams, this is referred to as a premature birth. Health impairments and developmental disorders are increasing as a child is born and the lower the birth weight. Critical is a birth before the 32nd pregnancy week or a birth weight below 2,500 grams.
In the first few weeks of life, the nutrition of the baby is the first priority . It needs numerous nutrients to develop normally. This is usually obtained by mother’s milk . When replacing food, care must be taken to ensure quality. High-quality food provides the necessary energy for the physical development, especially the brain, the immune system also benefits from it.
Also, it needs quiet, especially in the first time. The development processes in the brain, which usually take place until birth in the protected mother’s body, now take place outside, which is why an irritation overflow must be avoided. Nevertheless, stimulation is important to stimulate the senses.
Parent sponsorship is a major contributor to this development – including the Federal Association “The Early-born Child.” Parents, however, need to know exactly how they can best promote their preterm, which requires the development of the child and possible deficits.
The developmental status of children can only be assessed on the basis of a scale, because the speed is individual. In the case of premature infants, the corrected life is helpful in the first years of life, for example, in order to make at least vague comparisons: the period between the actual birth and the normal birth date is subtracted from the age of life.
But also, if you observe your child, development deficits can remain hidden. For this reason, regular developmental neurological examinations are recommended. Appropriate therapeutic measures can be selected by the results.
Possible developmental disorders
Studies have shown that the intelligence rate in premature infants is only an average of seven points below that of other children. However, the risk of learning disability is up to eleven times. Furthermore, premature babies tend to have an attention deficit, speech disorders and coordination disorders (dyspraxia).
In the school age, reading, spelling and computational weaknesses are more frequently detected; spatial or acoustic perceptual disturbances can also occur. In children with a birth weight below 1500 grams, the risk of vision impairment and hearing problems increases.
Concrete measures after birth
Premature infants are generally given a medically intensive care at a neonatological ward after their birth. The parents usually have unrestricted access to this ward and should be strongly involved in the treatment of your child. Depending on the need for treatment, the premature babies are treated either in an incubator (incubator) or a warm bed.
This also means that the proximity to the parents is replaced by a certain sterility. The child’s sensory perceptions associated with it shape the child. It is, therefore, all the more important to have constant contact with the parents, because the relationship between parents and the premature child is an essential prerequisite for the child’s further positive development.
It is a good idea to make a sound recording with your voice and play it to the child during your absence. It knows familiar voices from the time in the mother’s body; they give him security.
The so-called “kangaroo” has proven to be an effective form of therapy: in this cuddling method, the baby skin lies on skin on the breast of the mother or the father and can thus perceive their heartbeat, breathing and smell. Direct body contact with parents is one of the basic needs of an infant. The resulting trust and affection contribute significantly to the healthy development of the morning. In addition, the emotional bond between parents and the child is promoted.
It is helpful to support this through music. Choose quiet music with harmonious sounds!
Always remember that your child has left the guarding mother’s body too early. The movements were gently rocking; the environment was dark, all the sounds were muted. They help your child in the first time if you imitate these conditions as much as possible by darkening the room and avoiding unnecessary noise. A waterbed adjusts to the body and the movements gently.
The type of support a prenatal need in the individual case depends on the medical examinations. In addition to the stimulation of the senses, however, the development of the motor system must always be fundamentally supported.
The brain is trained by recurrent movements. Links are created, which later enable coordination. You can move the arms and legs at home and animate your child to grasp. In addition, there is a professional physiotherapy, which should be started as early as possible: what the brain learns early, it does not have to catch up later.
As important as your care is in a preschool, your child should develop into an independent personality. Premature infants are often smaller than their peers, are more frequently ill during the first years of life, and the parents’ anxiety is sometimes great. This can cause a child to be overrun.
However, the development of a healthy self-awareness should not be impaired. Your child must be able to gain experience and learn how to deal with other children. This is especially true when it is more petite and smaller than others, and sometimes, as is the case with small children, sometimes a bit more adventurous.
At the latest in the kindergarten, it must be able to assert itself against others and on the other hand have the experience that it is not a special position. It is therefore necessary to promote your early childhood, where it is necessary, but not to take care of it with excessive care.
Collaboration between parents and professionals
Usually, the premature birth takes place in a well-equipped clinic with experienced staff. There she is professionally looked after and examined immediately after birth. Specially trained therapists help the preterm in the first few days by stimulating the breathing and the suction reflex, stimulating the senses and promoting motor skills.
Modern technologies make it possible to carry out relevant investigations in the incubator. The child is exposed to as little stress as possible and early diagnoses can be made. This ensures that the child is optimally supplied with medical care and can be promoted in development in order to counteract possible deficits.
As soon as the condition of the child allows it, the parents should be actively involved. This begins with the “kangaroo method” and continues in therapeutic measures. Finally, the parents should be able to take care of their child after discharge from the hospital. The close cooperation also gives them security and can take a little care about the preemie.
The co-operation is, of course, also important after the dismissal. These include, in particular, control investigations to identify developmental problems. Any subsequent medical, therapeutic and domestic support measures should go hand in hand.
In most cases, when an optimal care is provided by parents and professionals, preterm infants receive the initial deficits in the first years of life, so that no or only very limited restrictions are to be expected.
This must be taken into account in the development of a baby:
- early and regular examinations
- quality nutrition
- Stimulate the senses
- Promote motor skills
- professional support
- do not overthrow
